4 Anime We Dropped Straight Away [Spring 2017]

Introduction

You know the feeling. You get ready to start a new anime, sometimes excited, sometimes wary, only to find out that it just isn't what you wanted to see. In fact, it's so bad it gets dropped straight away. While we here at Honey's Anime try our best to follow the three-episode rule and give series a chance to warm up, sometimes it's just too painful to get that far. Here are just four of the spring 2017 anime we dropped straight away!

Ellyn Barnes

1. Gin no Guardian

It’s been so long since I dropped Gin no Guardian that all memory of it has (thankfully) almost completely disappeared from my brain. From what I recall, my main issue wasn’t the nondescript story or the flat characters, but the fact that it didn’t seem to be going anywhere. The pretense was already something that I tend to avoid in anime - the transported-to-a-game-world trope - but I wanted to give it a chance. After all, anime with Chinese source material have been gaining traction recently, and they’re not all terrible. Episode one was pretty good. Sadly, after watching a few more, I realised that Gin no Guardian wasn’t really given much to work with from the start. The art in the anime is nothing like its cool-looking key visual, and the episodes are so short that they never get to go anywhere. I think the only thing I actually liked was the ED…

2. Frame Arms Girl

I only decided to give Frame Arms Girl a try because Japan is so crazy about it at the moment, with the DVDs and Blu-ray discs constantly charting on Amazon (nudge nudge, go check out our weekly ranking charts). As someone who has a high tolerance for crappy anime, I thought it would probably be bearable, if not enjoyable. But I didn’t even make it through the OP. I instantly found out why it’s so popular - I mean, the first frame is a panty shot. As far as I could tell from the one minute thirty seconds I suffered, it’s about tiny 3DCG plastic models (which are of course cute girls) owned by - you guessed it - cute girls. They run around with their panties half-exposed and their hair blowing in the wind, with maybe do some fighting here and there? I’m not sure. All I know was that I could tell straight away that it wasn’t the anime for me. Bye.

3. Kabukibu!

The problem is not that I start anime thinking “Oh I am gunna drop this,” but I often start to watch things and then I am like, “oh wait no this is a trainwreck and not worth my time.” Kabukibu was this. I love all CLAMP works. I love every single one of them. Even the angst roller coaster that was Tsubasa Chronicle. However, what I was not expecting was some dry, boring slice of life anime about a club. I mean yes, the bio does talk about Kurogo wanting to make this club, and I am all on board for club anime. They are usually great. (Except for Shoujo tachi wa Koya wo Mezasu. That was bad.) However, and no offense to those who enjoy this anime, but the boring super giddy main character feels like they took Nagisa from Free! and made him the main character. Big mistake. Then, they proceeded to fill the roles with very stereotypical male characters of a reverse harem. The problem being, at least at episode 2 because I gave up then, there was no girl! And even then, I think if I listened to Kurogo babble more about Kabuki, my head was going to explode. I would love to show this anime to Japanese high school boys and ask them which character they think they are. I would get the same answer of “none”. Bye.

4. Sakurada Reset

Have you ever heard of the deck of cards that a certain earth element male character gets in a game that is supposed to be a “sequel to Chrono Trigger aka the best game ever made”? It’s called “Pack of Lies”. This name could also be used to describe Sakurada Reset. Now I should preface this by saying that I have not dropped this show yet. Y E T being the key word and I am not sure how much longer it is going to stay. Originally we were sold on this super dramatic story of a town full of people who have unique powers. Then on the hunt to bring back a friend who has died, Kei and Misora work together to journey to try and get their friend back. That is the story we were told. Now while I have still only seen through episode 4, Kei is meh at best with almost zero passion it feels like, Misora could literally be replaced by a box of wet paper towels (No literally just photoshop them on top of her. You won’t know the difference.), and then a bunch of random characters who just exist. There is so much dialogue and so much jumping around, which I get because it is a time travel anime, that I am not sure if a linear script was written, torn up, rearranged, and then made into another script for Sakurada Reset. I may give this show one more episode, but two cours of them just talking about things and randomly jumping around in time plus fight scenes that made no sense, do not make for a good anime.

Final Thoughts

So, have you dropped any anime from this season straight away? Do you agree with our choices, or do you feel we should have given them a better chance before dropping them? Perhaps you have a vivid memory of dropping a particularly painful anime in the past? No matter what the case, we want to hear your thoughts, so let's get chatting in the comments!
