Ryunosuke Akutagawa Bio
Seiyuu Name: Ono, Kensho
Ryunosuke Akutagawa is the rising star in Port Mafia, one of the main antagonists of the series. Though many of those in Port Mafia possess fearsome abilities that command the respect of their fellow men, Ryunosuke is so terrifying that he is able to stand on his own and destroy the opposition single handedly.
This is due in part to how destructive his ability, Rashomon, is and how versatile it is in handling situations. With the power granted by his abilities, Ryunosuke seems to be in a situation where he would want for not. Wealth, power, and all the recognition that he could possibly want. Yet it seems…he yearns for something more…
Ryunosuke Akutagawa Highlights
1. Stylish Mafioso
When joining the Mafia, the one thing that everyone needs is a sense of style to properly accentuate the gravity of everything that they are doing. A well pressed suit makes a big difference between a bunch of thugs gunning down everything in sight and a dedicated band of suited up men taking care of business with their tommy guns.
Ryunosuke Akutagawa is uniquely qualified to fulfil this aspect of being part of the Mafia. While he doesn’t go the suit and tie route that many of them choose to use, Ryunosuke dresses to impress even when they are nothing but scum to his eyes. He wears a cool black coat over his body that hides just enough to make his enemies wonder what kind of weapons he’s hiding under there. And those frills are just perfect to give the veneer of being a gentleman whilst he is in fact a bloodthirsty killer.
And not only is his cloak stylish, it is functional as well. His ability, Rashomon, is actually derived from the type of clothing he wears. Because his cloak is so long, Rashomon is able to stretch long distances and impale his enemies from afar. This also allows him some breathe of movement to play around with the complexity of his attacks. Ryunosuke Akutagawa is what happens when fashion starts to kill people.
2. Chip on His Shoulder
Ryunosuke acts like there’s something pissing him off at all times. His temper exists purely over a hair trigger, and he will kill mercilessly if anything pushes him over the edge. The ever present anger that exists within will cascade out like an endless tsunami seeking out the very person that decided it was a good idea to antagonise the one guy who can literally make a piece of garment turn into a lethal weapon.
In most good guy characters, this is the sort of thing that is frowned upon. Fairy Tail has its no killing rule and we’ve never actually seen Naruto kill more than 5 people in the anime in its entirety. But we all have to remember at this point that Ryunosuke Akutagawa is not the good guy of the show at all. He is one who exists within the shadows of the world, and thrives in its underbelly.
It’s practically a wonderful thing that Ryunosuke has such emotions to the point of bursting, because anything and anyone could try to hurt him at any time, and his lack of hesitation in acting will save him more than once when an assassin finds himself impaled six ways to Sunday because he breathed too loudly when trying to kill Ryunosuke. The weak will die indeed…
3. Doesn’t Give a Fudge
When we say that Ryunosuke doesn’t give a fudge, we actually mean…well you know what we meant. Despite his ever present anger, Ryunosuke does know how to act like a badass when the situation calls for it. If he didn’t, the title above wouldn’t be very appropriate anymore. So what does Ryunosuke not give a fudge about? Everything.
It doesn’t matter if you have wealth, power, looks, or connections, as long as you are an obstacle in his way, he will do all he can to plow you into the ground before mincing you so finely that all that exists in the end is the fine spray of blood that you’ve now stained the ground with. The only thing that can keep Ryunosuke in check is someone stronger than him, which is the only reason he is still subservient to the boss of the Port Mafia.
But if you don’t have that power, Ryunosuke would do to you what he did to the members of the Guild. Two of them were high level members with blood manipulation and wind manipulation abilities, but he completely wrecked them despite being injured to a severe degree before leaving like a badass. Because cool guys don’t look at explosions, and they don’t give a fudge.
Someone once said that money is the fancy house that falls apart within a decade, whilst power is the stone mansion that stands the test of time. That person was Kevin Spacey in House of Cards, but the point is relevant nonetheless. What use is there in having wealth and dozens of men at your disposal when your enemy is able to dispose of them like so much cannon fodder? What is the purpose of your arsenal of weapons, when he can devour the very space around him to prevent the bullets from even reaching him?
Ryunosuke Akutagawa is power personified. There are many ability users within the show. Many of them have useful applications, like illusions for escaping or healing to support their allies. But very few of them were made for the one thing that Ryunosuke Akutagawa is good at; killing. His power has no business in protecting the weak. It devours and destroys anything that stands in its way.
Rashomon has the capability to devour space itself! That’s the very fabric of our universe that his ability is so casually destroying in a simple defensive manoeuvre. Throughout the show, there is almost no one who is able to stop Ryunosuke simply because of how powerful he is, and that is only rightly so, because he is just that much of a Mafia Badass.
5. Something to Prove
It’s been said many times throughout this article that Ryunosuke Akutagawa is a very powerful individual capable of standing on his own. Despite that, there stands one person who is able to stop him 100% of the time. This person is Osamu Dazai, the suicidal idiot on the side of the good guys. It’s later revealed that Dazai was actually part of Port Mafia and was in charge of training Ryunosuke before he gained his current power level.
So what makes Dazai such a threat to Ryunosuke? What amazing ability does he have that can defeat Rashomon, that which consumes the very concept of space and time? His ability is called No Longer Human, and it allows him to nullify any ability that Ryunosuke comes into contact with. This makes him the perfect counter for ability holders, including Ryunosuke. This lets him continuously beat him into submission during training, forever pointing out how worthless Akutagawa is despite his amazing power.
When Dazai finally defects, he picks up a stray in Atsushi. Ryunosuke becomes obsessed with defeating Atsushi because Dazai states that he sees more potential in Atsushi than he ever did in Ryunosuke. It has been pointed out by many that Ryunosuke isn’t just empty anger. He possesses an insane desire and is driven to hear a simple word from a certain someone.
“You’ve grown strong.”
Ryunosuke initially appears to be a shallow power fantasy that attracts the young boys to watch an action packed anime full of cool fight scenes. The fancy way that he summons Rashomon and his many named attacks are an indicator of that. But Bungou Stray Dogs is very good at fleshing out its characters, and he is shown to be much deeper than he appears to be.
While it is true that he is a Mafia Badass, he is a person as well. Ryunosuke is not an empty vessel that threshes about on the waves for attention. There is a direction to his rage even as he lets the world feel his pain. And he will continue to do so until he hears that word, but until then, the world can feel the fury of the Mafia Badass.
