Perhaps older otakus will remember the classic anime of Heidi, the Girl of the Alps. Well, if Heidi would have been born in the 21st century, she probably would have been the object of secret experimentations that would have given her super powers. This is the basic premise of Alice to Zouroku, a modern Heidi in cute clothes who fights and is super sweet with her grandfather. However, this is not the first time a Lolita goes to war and/or has a respectful relationship with a grown up. Let us remember some anime similar to Alice to Zouroku!

Similar Anime to Alice to Zouroku

1. Usagi Drop

  • Episodes: 11
  • Aired: Jul 8, 2011 to Sep 16, 2011

Maybe what attracted you about Alice to Zouroku was the relationship between the two main characters. In that case, Usagi Drop might be a good recommendation for you. The story starts with the death of the household head of the Kawachis, who left an illegitimate daughter called Rin behind. This girl’s mother abandoned her in order to pursue a mangaka career. Daikichi Kawachi, enraged to see how all the family rejects the little Rin, decides to take her in himself. Thus starts Daikichi’s journey of parenthood, but how will a 30 year bachelor fare in such a difficult task?

As we stated before, Usagi Drop is a warm story about a new parent and his protegee, which has all the vibes of Alice to Zouroku. The main difference is that the first one is a slice of life everyone can relate to, while the second one is more into the lines of sci-fi. Nevertheless, if you are kinda tired of seeing love stories taking the center stage and want something a bit different, both animes will make you feel refreshed. There is a dab of comedy in the two as well.

2. K

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: Oct 5, 2012 to Dec 28, 2012

This series could be considered the opposite of Usagi Drop. If what you like about Alice to Zouroku is the battles in the city settings, K might fit the bill. Anyway, does anyone remember how wars start? For example, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand prompted the first World War. K might have been partly inspired by this anecdote, as clans battle in the not so far future. With the murder of a Red member of a clan, an innocent student called Kurou Yatogami is falsely accused, but will be able to prove his innocence?

Although K’s focus is in the battles of the seven red Kings (the most powerful warriors of the red clan), there is something similar in Alice to Zouroku besides the battling factions. That is one of the supporting characters called Anna. While Sanna (Alice to Zourku’s protagonist) is deemed as the red queen, Anna is deemed as the red princess. Both went through painful experiments that gave them their special powers. Plus, both dress like Lolitas!

3. Rozen Maiden

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: Jul 5, 2013 to Sep 27, 2013

Rozen Maiden has an older version released in 2004, but we are mentioning here the most recent version. Rozen Maiden was the craze of everyone who likes Lolitas and/or Victorian fashion. Because, who can resist a group of lovely dolls who also have fighting skills? The first one (Shinku) arrives at Jun Sakurada’s door, a guy who is not good at socializing. From that point on, his lonely life will take a sharp turn. Through a complicated and cruel game, the dolls will have to compete to see who is the Alice among them. Who will survive to tell the tale? Nope, we are not going to tell you 😉

There are several parallels between Alice to Zouroku and Rozen Maiden. In the first place, the main male character is a rather grumpy and cold person (although only in appearance) who becomes fond of the main female character. Both Sanna and Shinku have unique powers and dress up in Lolita fashion. The main difference is the age difference between the male characters. With all of these differences, it is no wonder why Rozen Maiden comes to mind in anime like Alice to Zouroku!

4. Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Oct 17, 2014 to Dec 26, 2014

Some of you might find it an eyesore to have a male protagonist in anime like Alice to Zouroku. So, how about an all girls anime? In Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru, we meet Yuuki Yuuna. She is an enthusiastic member of the Hero Club in her Middle School, a person who really likes to help others. However, she will become a true heroine when strange things start happening in the city and, together with her friends, Yuuki becomes a super heroine!

If you are into cute girls with superpowers, you will notice the similarities between Sanna and Yuuki’s team. We also have a dual vibe in both stories: in one side, the normal and sweet life of the girls, while in the other, a story full of action and conflict unfolds. The main difference is the focus in the relationship between the girls in Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru. And well, none of them is particular fond of the Lolita style 😉 There is also an important difference, which is that Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru had several seasons, while Alice to Zouroku is still ongoing.

5. Demi-chan wa Kataritai

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jan 8, 2017 to Mar 26, 2017

Oh, scientists. They are so curious, always overthinking and trying to discover the meaning of the universe… Some of them like to study other living beings too. Tetsuo Takahashi is one of these such scientists. As a teacher in Shibasaki High School, he has the chance to interact with Demis, a special type of human with a certain mutation. Tetsuo decides to conduct a series of interviews on them. However, these Demis are adorable teenager girls who, above all, are human at heart! Also, a new school teacher who is a Demi as well will add to the fun.

If what you like about Alice to Zouroku is the heartwarming scenes and human interaction, Demi-chan wa Kataritai might be the best option for you. The Demis are inspired by mythological creatures, and their powers can be intimidating sometimes, as Sanna’s. They are also growing up and discovering the world, so the relationship they build with Tetsuo is that of a mentor and mentorees, just like in the protagonists relationship in Alice to Zouroku.

6. Shuumatsu Nani Shittemasu ka? Isogashii Desu ka? Sukutte Morate ii Desu ka?

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Apr 11, 2017 to present

Finally, we should recommend this ongoing series that has all the vibes of a fairy tale. It was based on a light novel. We have to inform you that in the story, we humans have been extinct for 500 years. The terrible Beasts dominate the Earth now, so what was left of civilization has left to build floating cities in the skies. To defend such cities, girls with special powers called Leprechauns fight against the Beasts. The only human left, Willem, wakes up in such a scenario. He becomes the foster father of some Leprechauns while trying to adjust himself to this new and strange world…

Alice to Zouroku and Shuumatsu Nani Shittemasu Ka? Isogashi Desu ka? Sukutte Morate ii Desu ka? tell us the story of cute, innocent girls with superpowers. They also have a male protector who teaches them the meaning of being a family. The story is not as sweet as it might look at first sight in both cases. So, what is there not to like here? Shuumatsu Nani Shittemasu Ka? Isogashi Desu ka? Sukutte Morate ii Desu ka? has all the cuteness and all the action you are seeking!

Final Words

Anime about the conflicts of being young and innocent in a cruel world are a constant in the otaku world. Perhaps we might have the idea that childhood should be all rainbows, sunlight and chocolate. Japanese artists are telling us otherwise, though. Intelligent kids can handle a bit of conflict, especially if they have people who communicate effectively with them. That is why many anime like Alice to Zouroku reflect such situations.

Also, the superpowers can very well be a metaphor for disabilities or any kind of differences. The message of these animes is that we are all human, and that together, we can make a better day. Family can be anywhere in the world, we just have to find it 🙂 Tell us, which anime like Alice to Zouroku are you watching right now? Don’t forget that we are open to all your comments and suggestions. See you soon!
