Himeno Kimihara and her classmates are just average students, dealing with things like growing up, making new friends, and love. Yet their appearance is anything but average! Himeno is a centaur, and her classmates are a range of angels, demons, satyrs and other supernatural creatures. Centaur no Nayami is a relaxing slice of life anime, with elements that make viewers think a little bit. Most of the series focuses on Himeno and her friends as they struggle to grow up, with some politics and underlying tones on wider societal issues thrown in. This underlying deeper aspect is actually what drives most of the show’s plot, all while keeping the superficial appearance of a funny slice of life show. Centaur no Nayami is still new, leaving many people on the fence about how the anime will actually turn out.

For those who do love Centaur no Nayami, it is the dualism between cutesy slice of life and deeper meaning that keeps you coming back for more. Himeno is a sweet and shy centaur, and she often deals with situations similar to our own. This show stands out because of its elements of the supernatural blending into an average slice of life, giving it a unique perspective. So what do you do when you’re waiting for the next episode of Centaur no Nayami to come out? Well, aside from having a social life, you could watch an anime similar to Centaur no Nayami! 1. Demi-chan wa Kataritai (Interviews with Monster Girls)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jan. 2017 – Mar. 2017

Tetsuo Takahashi is a biology teacher with an interest in the supernatural “Ajin” that live among humans. One day, Takahashi decides to conduct interviews with some of the “Demi” girl students he teaches. He begins to learn more about his students as he interviews them – not just about their supernatural qualities, but their human ones as well. Hikari Takanashi is an outgoing vampire, Kyouko Machi is a kind dullahan and Yuki Kusakabe is a soft-spoken snow woman. Takahashi is able to further his bond with his students through the interviews, and finds the Demi are not as different from humans as he first thought. Demi-chan wa Kataritai is an enjoyable take on the supernatural school life, with a deeper meaning driving the series. The monster girls’ antics are funny and relatable, giving viewers a way to see themselves in these unique characters.

Takahashi and his students find they are all similar to one another, and share qualities thought to be only human. Himeno and her classmates discover the same thing as they grow up together. Despite their difference in appearance and supernatural abilities, they are all just teenagers figuring out life one step at a time. Both of these anime are relaxing slice of life, focused on how the supernatural is actually not that different from human society. Centaur no Nayami and Demi-chan wa Kataritai share the lighthearted feeling of their content, while providing a deeper meaning for the viewer. This underlying meaning drives the plots of both anime. If you liked Centaur no Nayami, Demi-chan wa Kataritai is a good option for you as well!

2. Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou (Monster Musume: Everyday Life with Monster Girls)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jul. 2015 – Sep. 2015

Kimihito Kurusu lived a normally quiet life alone while his parents traveled abroad. In his reality, Japan is on the edge of a huge societal change, as the first country to welcome non-human species into society. After Kimihito is unwittingly put in charge of a Lamia named Miia, his life gets turned upside down! Miia seems to attract all sorts of other creatures into Kimihito’s life, and they are all women who want his attention. Of course, Kimihito’s growing harem is out of luck – sexual excursions between the different species are forbidden. The only exception is a provisional law that includes marriage! Kimihito struggles to deal with the fantastical harem that hounds him everywhere he goes in this humorous anime.

Monster Musume is very much a harem and includes an abundance of ecchi. Obviously, Centaur no Nayami doesn’t really follow either of those themes. However, Monster Musume still has the supernatural aspect of the different creatures following Kimihito around. In Monster Musume, you do get to learn about each of the different species in question, even if most of the knowledge learned is more of a sexual connotation. Monster Musume still has the comedic effect that Centaur no Nayami contains. While Monster Musume is certainly much more out there than Centaur no Nayami, if you can get past the ecchi and harem atmosphere, it still has monster girls at the heart of it.

3. Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon (Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid)

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: Jan. 2017 – Apr. 2017

Kobayashi is a stoic woman who receives an unexpected visitor one day on her way to work. A large dragon waits on her balcony! The dragon transforms into a girl, and introduces herself as Tohru. Tohru tells Kobayashi that they had met the night before, and the woman had offered the dragon a place to stay, since she had nowhere else to go. Tohru offers to be Kobayashi’s personal maid in recompense. Though Kobayashi regrets her previous drunken night’s endeavors, she reluctantly agrees to take the young dragon maid in. Tohru turns Kobayashi’s life upside down in her attempts to make Kobayashi’s life easier, as Kobayashi deals with the struggles of having a dragon maid.

The adventures of Kobayashi, Tohru and her new friends are just as comical as those Himeno and her classmates experience in Centaur no Nayami. Kobayashi is a bit older than Himeno’s group, being an adult with a job and her own apartment. However, learning to deal with Tohru, Kanna, and the mythical girls’ quirks is quite similar to Himeno and her friends learning to respect one another’s challenges. Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon shows how the dragons still share very human-like qualities and emotions, sometimes even more apparent than Kobayashi herself! Both anime have relaxed slice of life elements mixed with the supernatural or fantastical. You should give Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid a chance! If you liked Centaur no Nayami, you will find this anime to be entertaining as well.

4. Flying Witch

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Apr. 2016 – June 2016

Makoto Kowata is embarking on the next stage of her life, leaving home to live independently. While it may seem too early for normal people to move out at 15 years of age, Makoto is following the tradition of witches passed down through generations. Accompanied by her cat familiar Chito, they travel to Aomori, a region witches frequent. Makoto moves in with her second cousins, Kei and Chinatsu Kuramoto, while she begins studying witchcraft. Her adventures have just begun as she learns to balance the life of a teenager and that of a witch!

Like Centaur no Nayami, Flying Witch takes elements of slice of life anime and combines them with supernatural aspects. Makoto’s adventures with her friends and family as she grows up are reminiscent of Himeno and her classmates’ own. Both anime also have a relaxed atmosphere. While the supernatural elements are different (witches vs. mythical creatures), they still have the same vibe of growing up differently than humans. Yet the human quality remains important in both. If you like Centaur no Nayami, Flying Witch is a great watch for you!

5. Oshiete! Galko-chan (Please tell me! Galko-chan)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jan. 2016 – Mar. 2016

Galko, Otako and Ojou seem like three high school girls who would never get along. Galko is outgoing and friendly, with a reputation for being a party animal even though she actually isn’t. Otako’s appearance is rather average, and she harbors a sarcastic personality with a love of manga. Ojou is an air-headed daughter of a wealthy family, with all the social graces that go along with it. Yet these three are actually best friends, who talk about everything with one another. Although they are quite different, they simply use those differences to fuel their conversations and questions about growing up. Not many people can have friends like these!

Oshiete! Galko-chan is another slice of life anime with a humorous look at young girls growing up. While it doesn’t have the supernatural element that Centaur no Nayami does, Galko, Otako and Ojou’s discussions will remind you of those between Himeno and her friends. Oshiete! Galko-chan also focuses on finding the similar human qualities between three girls who appear so different from one another. Centaur no Nayami does this more blatantly, by having the girls with different races as well as personalities. Both anime have the same elements and themes, even if one is lacking the supernatural aspect of the other. We think that if you’re looking for the type of situations and topics found in Centaur no Nayami, Oshiete! Galko-chan could be a good fit. It has plenty of entertaining situations!

6. Gabriel DropOut

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jan. 2017 – Mar. 2017

Gabriel DropOut is another anime about supernatural girls questioning life as they grow up. Gabriel White Tenma is an angel who is the top of her class, until she is sent down to study among humans as all angels do. Gabriel quickly discovers the joy of playing video games, and starts to fall behind in her studies as she becomes numb to everything else. Her demon friend Vignette April Tsukinose tries to help Gabriel snap out of it, and get her back to her old self, but Gabriel is hard set in her ways. The two soon befriend two other supernatural girls. Raphiel Ainsworth Shiraha is Gabriel’s angel classmate who is somewhat of a sadist, and Satanichia McDowell Kurumizawa is a clumsy demon who claims she will rule the Underworld one day. What kind of crazy adventures will these four uncover?

Gabriel DropOut is about four friends discovering what it means to be an angel or a demon, although the group doesn’t come to the conclusions they thought they would. Centaur no Nayami is no stranger to this concept, as the mythical girls discover the commonalities they share. Gabriel and her friends will find both faults and strengths in each other as they train together among humans. Gabriel considers herself a “Fallen Angel” because of her hikikomori lifestyle, as Himeno often fears there is something wrong with her because she is the lone centaur at her school. Both anime have a slice of life genre with funny supernatural elements. Yet both are still relatable as well, as the girls’ struggles often reflect our own growing-up experience. Gabriel DropOut is a great anime, one that we highly recommend!

Final Thoughts

Supernatural creatures, while different from what we might expect, can actually be more relatable for viewers. By pointing out characters’ human qualities, we are able to identify with fantastical beings like centaurs, witches, dragons or angels. This is especially true when they struggle through things we also face, like growing into adulthood. And it is for these reasons that anime like Centaur no Nayami continue to be so popular!
