To a lot of people, Chobits is an old favorite (airing in 2002) but yet it’s an anime that will never go out of date. Being an original CLAMP creation, it comes as no surprise to see the stunning art style and wonderful mixture of genres, namely, some comedy, drama, romance and science fiction.

The main character has desperately wanted a Persocom, an advanced android that is a personal computer. One night he stumbles upon one bandaged up on a pile of trash and decides to keep her. Although she can only say Chii, she seems to have much more advanced technology and is suspected of being a Chobit, a Persocom of myth to have independent thought.

It’s safe to say the “robot girl” theme always sticks with us in a thought provoking way. Would science ever get so far to be able to make robots of free will? Will the fact she’s a robot prevent this romance from happening? Chobits also wonderfully demonstrated how an anime can engage us in such a peaceful, heart tugging way. If you loved any of these themes, you will love the following anime recommendations.

Similar Anime to Chobits

1. Sora no Otoshimono (Heaven’s Lost Property)

HEAVEN'S LOST PROPERTY(sora no otoshimono) dvd
  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: Oct 5, 2009 - Dec 28, 2009

Ikaros, who we find out is an angel, shares a lot of similar qualities to the android theme, as angel representations often go in anime. She struggles with figuring out feelings and free will, all the while spending day to day life with her “master” Tomoki Sakurai. Like Chii, she’s unaware of her purpose in the beginning.

Like Chobits, this anime will make you laugh a lot, although with much more ecchi themes. It touches on some serious aspects of life while providing some very ecchi humor in a harem atmosphere. The main character, Tomoki Sakurai, really loved his normal boring life and wanted to keep it that way and we watch as Ikaros changes that with her aloof, naive angelic ways.

2. Plastic Memories

Plastic Memories
  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: April 2015 – Ongoing

As a more updated recommendation, Plastic Memories is a must watch. Androids called Giftias have the most emotion we’ve seen yet in robots but there’s a catch; they have a time limit. After they reach their time limit, they go berserk and lose what little “humanity” they have left in them. Because of this, their parent company has a terminal service where teams consisting of one Giftia and one human go and “retrieve” expiring Giftias. We see a new employee, Tsukasa Mizugaki, team up with a Giftia named Isla and watch their relationship grow on and off the job.

This series really catches Chobits’ drama feel factor. As the Giftias start off with so much emotion, we immediately see the repercussions of having a pre-determined life span and these terminal service employees basically acting as the grim reaper for androids. Although, Chii and Isla seem to be polar opposites at first, (Chii always smiling and Isla never) you can really see the similar aloofness and naivety it means to be a robot in a human world.

3. DearS

dears dvd
  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2004 – September 2004

Although the theme being aliens and not androids, we really see a big similarity here with science fiction and fan service, however, DearS is definitely more on the ecchi side than Chobits. Ren, an alien known as DearS, is similar in cuteness and cheerfulness as Chii is most known for. Also like Chii, Ren is malfunctioning and being hunted.

This main protagonist also happens upon his female lead, although he’s a little more reluctant to be served as he doesn’t know about the “master-servant” relationship DearS are supposed to give. Soon the relationship known as the “Gift” happens between this DearS and her master.

4. Kotetsu Tenshi Kurumi (Steel Angel Kurumi)

  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: October 1999 – April 2000

Old but gold, as they always say. Most anime fans have heard of Kotetsu Tenshi Kurumi, or Steel Angel Kurumi, at some point because it’s such a classic. As the name suggests, Kurumi is an android but is specifically designed for war. She’s a secret experiment with superhuman abilities and one day, Nakahito Kagura happened upon her body while sneaking into her maker’s house. Tripping and, coincidentally, falling on her lips awakens her.

Although there’s more fighting in this anime, the romcom drama mixture really nails it, making this series a must watch for any anime lover but definitely a fan of Chobits.

5. Clannad

  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: October 2007 – July 2008

Another more slightly updated classic, Clannad is a fan favorite for anybody interested in the romantic-comedy-drama genre trio and despite its lack of science fiction, is quite similar to Chobits. This is probably the most heart string tugging recommendation on the list but don’t be fooled; there’s plenty of the fluffy humor you see in Chobits.

Tomoya Okazaki has had a rough life since his mother passed away when he was young and as a result his father become an angry drunk, causing a rift between the two. Because of this, he starts out at the beginning of the series as a delinquent but meets a girl named Nagisa Furukawa and his life starts to wind in a different direction.

6. Mahoromatic

mahoromatic dvd
  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: October 2001 – December 2001

In Mahoromatic the battle androids have a time limit. Mahoro is the most powerful veteran android and she’s got little time left; but if she stops fighting, she can last for over a year. She chooses to live life as a normal human, serving a young high school boy who’s lost his family and has no one to take care of him.

Albeit short, Mahoromatic is a big name you hear in the robot girl world, and rightfully so. Like Chobits, there’s comedy, romance, and in this case, just a little extra ecchi. The romance which always brings up those probing questions these robot girl themes always have.
