In order to provide you with the freshest information, we update. This is one of those updates. When you are done reading this article, be sure to check out the original at the bottom!

You know how this tale goes. Haruhi Fujita is a student who is poor. We don’t mean just poor; we mean that she is barely scraping by. Somehow, though, she lands a scholarship to Ouran High School which is one of the most prestigious high schools for students with a good pedigree. Stumbling after school into a room where she thinks she can study in quiet, she stumbles across the host club. It’s a club where women pay to come and be wooed and entertained by boys. Terrified, she begins to try to leave and shatters a vase worth over $80,000. The boys recognize that she owes them a debt and they offer to let her work it off in their club; she just has to pose as a boy.

Haruhi is swept up in various situations as she meets and gets to know Tamaki, Kyouya, the Hitachin twins, Honey, and Mori. This is a classic for many people so it is clear that this show needs to have its similar anime carefully picked. Take a look below and consider six other anime similar to Ouran High School Host Club.

Similar Anime to Ouran High School Host Club

1. Dance With Devils

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: October 2015 – December 2015

In a very unique introduction, Ritsuka Tachibana is introduced and then promptly summoned by the student council. Suddenly Rem Kaginuki considers her, a very good student, to be somewhat of a problem? Suddenly they break out in song? She gets out but then strange things start to happen… Her mother is kidnapped, Vampires reveal themselves to her, and then werewolves do. She is the carrier of something called a “Grimoire” and both of these creatures are after whatever she seems to have. Did we mention yet that the boys often break out in song? Welcome to Dance with Devils.

When looking at parallels, some people may have issues going beyond the surface. Dance with Devils and Ouran are actually essential on two very foundational levels, both have a strong vein of Romance and both are about female protagonists being pursued by male leads aka reverse harems. Tamaki is after Haruhi with his charms while Rem is after Ritsuka for the “grimoire”… right… sure, Rem… whatever helps you sleep at night. Both stories too are something that once you pick up, you just cannot put down! Don’t take our word for it, though, enjoy this unique take on reverse harem and let us know!

2. Aoharu x Kikanjuu [Aoharu x Machine Gun]

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2015 – September 2015

Hotaru Tachibana has a positive and courageous personality. She is quick to speak up against anything that goes against her sense of justice. So one day, she decides to help out her friend and confront a host. When she confronts him in his own territory, he challenges her to a survival game. Not knowing what this means, she agrees. After getting her but kicked, she is coerced into joining a team called Toy Gun Gun where she is now accepted as a boy? Whoops. She has been wearing a male uniform non stop so she has been mistaken for a boy. Hotaru is working her way as a boy into the group when she starts to begin a friendship with her teammates. They decide to become the best team at “survival games” in Japan.

Aoharu is more action than one would think. However, much like Haruhi now has to pass herself off as a male host, Hotaru has to pose as a boy in Toy Gun Gun or be kicked out for being a girl. The blurring of the lines of gender here is fantastic. Ouran is a bit heavier on the comedy than Aoharu, but Aoharu will keep you entertained plenty with its action scenes!

3. Kaichou wa Maid-sama! (Maid Sama!)

  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: April 2010 – September 2010

Yup! Kaichou wa Maid-sama is about Misaki, one of the most difficult and strict school council presidents around. She has to be! She is the first female president in a school that recently became co-ed. Misaki though has a dark Secret. She actually works at a maid café. She does so to help pay bills at home. Complete with a maid uniform, she is discovered one day by the most popular boy in school, Takumi! Rather than ratting her out to the whole school, he offers to keep her secret safe as a way to get what he wants and just happens to start to get closer to her. This could just be his lucky break!

Starting at the surface, Romance, School settings are comedy are a great place to start when looking at similarities. Both Haruhi and Misaki are in situations that are less than ideal but they do begin to accept their positions and lots. Haruhi and Misaki are both targeted by the popular boys in school who could have anyone but choose them. Both are incredibly stubborn as well in their own ways. Don’t take our word for it though, take a look at it yourself.

4. Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun (Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2014 – September 2014

Chiyo Sakura is in love with a boy named Umetarou Nozaki in her school. She tries her luck and confesses to him! She's then handed an autograph? Confused, Chiyo looks into it and learns that Umetarou is actually a famous shoujo manga artist! Through some events, she is now his assistant! She is determined to help Umetarou while also getting him to notice her!

Hijinks abound with these two series and the comedy in them. Nozaki-kun feels like a shoujo, which is what Ouran is, but it is actually Shounen showing that shows can cross over. The funny thing too is that Haruhi is hilariously out of touch, which is exactly how Nozaki-kun is as well. Just check this one out and be ready to enjoy!

5. Hatsukoi Monster

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2016 – September 2016

Kaho Nikaidou has it all. Money, perfect friends, perfect life, and she has had it! She moves out and moves to Tokyo for high school. While unpacking though she goes to chase an item that has fallen out and is rolling down the road. In derpy anime female character fashion, she wanders out to wander right in front of an oncoming truck! Someone grabs her and saves her. She immediately thinks that this boy is meant for her. She confesses her love and he agrees until he turns around and she sees a big while 5-1 and his name, Takahashi, written on his shirt. This means he is an elementary student. What transpires after that is pure comedy. From someone’s genitalia disappearing, to her misunderstanding things, Hatsukoi Monster is a clear summer hit.

While these two shows, Ouran and Hatsukoi Monster are similar shows, they are still slightly enjoyably different. Comedy is rich in both of these shows, and while Ouran focuses on people losing face, Hatsukoi Monster goes all out with potty humor. Both are Romance as well while Tamaki chases Haruhi, Kaho is clearly after Kanade until she realizes that he is like ten, but she stays with it. Stick with the well deserved hype and get on this show now!

6. Brothers Conflict

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2013 – September 2013

Ema Hinata leads an ordinary life with her father until one day her father remarries and brings home a lot of baggage! Her new mother has thirteen, that’s right, THIRTEEN children that are now all her step-siblings. Skip a few scenes forward and in order to adjust as well as give her father and new step-mother some space, she and the boys move into a mansion. However she soon begins to learn maybe it’s too late for them to become brother and sister, but what about lovers?

Ouran and Brothers Conflict are, right off the bat, reverse harems. Haruhi has a club of hormone raging boys after her while Ema has thirteen boys now after her. Both clearly also play to their romance and shoujo tropes as well with a path for the clear target of romance appearing at some point in the series. Ouran has rich boys and surprise surprise, Ema’s brothers are all right too. Both series even include a set of twins and a set of cross-dressing characters! Haruhi wears it for work and Hikaru wears them to get into the minds of criminals for his novels.

The appeal of stories like this of course lies in their male characters. To be honest, we could care less about who the protagonist will be with, as long as we are able to enjoy a feast of MEN. Men in different body shapes, hair color, personal features, characters, and special skills (?). Ouran High School Host Club gives a perfect selection of the different types of attractive men across the wide spectrum of female preferences.

As common as the settings in Ouran High School Host Club, it is incomparable in it's humor and the development of it's characters. However, we still managed to find some similar anime that take on features akin to our beloved Ouran High School Host Club.

Here are our picks!

Similar Anime to Ouran High School Host Club / Similar Anime to Ouran Koukou Host Club

1. Fruits Basket

  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: Jul 5, 2001 - Dec 27, 2001

Talking about feasts of men, there is no way we will leave out the oldie but goodie, Fruits Basket. Tohru, our main protagonist, is a high school girl who finds herself homeless after her mother passed away in a car accident. She then camps outside in the woods, which turns out to be the Sohma family's private property. The Sohma family takes her in and Tohru's magical life and adventure with more than a dozen men (of different shapes, color, characters, personal features, and special skills, of course) begin.

Twelve members of the Sohma family lives with a curse where they will turn into animals of the Chinese zodiac when stressed, depressed, or hugged by the opposite gender (wow). Similar to Ouran High School, one of the main themes of this story is to see how Tohru's presence in the family gradually changes them and breaks the curse. While Haruhi is able to resolve traumatic experiences members in the Host Club went through in the past, Tohru is the crucial force in restoring faith, love, and warmth in the hearts of the cursed.

So, instead of a basket of fruits, I present to you a basket of tantalizing male pheromone.

2. Uta no☆Prince-Sama (Uta no Prince-sama: Maji Love 1000%)

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: Jul 3, 2011 - Sep 24, 2011

Adapted from manga, Uta no Prince-Sama ("Prince of Song") is bound to be mouth watering (this is the only adjective I could think of). Our main protagonist, Haruka Nanami, is a student at the Saotome Academy, a prestigious school of performing arts. She comes to apply for the school in hope of becoming a song writer for her favorite singer, Hayato.

For some reason, she starts to hang out regularly with six (seven, if you count in the cursed prince, Cecil, who appears as a black cat in the first season and becomes human after Haruka breaks the spell) handsome, talented, prestigious, and occasionally wealthy men on campus (which is where the name "Prince" comes from).

We have most of our standard male characters in this show--prince Ren Jinguji, tender and sweet Natsuki Shinomiya, optimistic sunshine Otoya Ittoki, stern and serious Tokiya Ichinose, reticent and traditional Masato Hijirikawa, the foreign and exotic Cecil Aijima, and shyouta Syo Kurusu.

In addition to all these, we also have the alarmingly beautiful Otokonoko (male girl), Ringo Tsukimiya. Cross-dressing always has its appeal. While Haruhi crosses as male in Ouran High School, Ringo is the creme de la creme with his unquestionable femininity in Uta no Prince-Sama. This is more than we could ask for!

3. Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge (The Wallflower)

  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: Oct 4, 2006 - Mar 28, 2007

Similar to Haruhi, our main character in The Wallflower is also an atypical female protagonist. Sunako has interests and hobbies that are rarely seen in most Shoujo manga protagonists (Japanese YA manga targeting at teen girls). She has a morbid fascination with horror movies, blood, dark and scary themes, dresses in all black, and is obsessed with skeletons (her best friends are a skeleton skull named "John," and a human anatomy model named "Hiroshi").

The story begins with Sunako moving into her aunt's house, forcing her to live with four beautiful, smart, talented, attractive, and popular high school boys her age. Her aunt, Mine Nakahara, is determined to transform the dark and Gothic girl into a presentable and sociable "Lady," and decides to burden her four beautiful tenants--Kyohei Takano, Takenaga Oda, Yukinojo Toyama (Yuki), and Ranmaru Moriithis (Mori)--with this impossible task in exchange for rent (which is now a dilemma).

Besides of being surrounded by beautiful men, Sunako and Haruhi share many characteristics. For example, both girls are independent and smart, both are good at sports, both are skilled in handling house chores, and both are highly insensitive and oblivious of others' fondness towards them and their own romantic feelings, thus making the development of love relationships in both stories extremely slow (but fun).

Like Ouran High School, Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge is also pleasantly entertaining. The author adds in tons of whimsical jokes with unrealistic settings, plots, and developments, making the story even more comical.

4. Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun (Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jul 7, 2014 - Sep 22, 2014

Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun has most of the typical elements of what are expected of Shoujo mangas. An innocent and clumsy female protagonist, Chiyo Sakura, who has a crush on our main male character and tries everything to be closer to him. A main male character, Umetarou Nozaki, who is kind of lukewarm to everything around him instead of Shoujo mangas, which he does for a living. A bunch of friends involved, or not, with the couple's extremely slow developing relationship.

What is unique about this piece is that it plays heavily with gender stereotypes and expectations. While Ouran High School has Haruhi cross-dressing as a male host through out the whole story, most of the characters in Monthly Girl's have a certain gender-bend to them. Besides of Umetarou's passion for mangas targeted at a female teen audience, the personality of the main female protagonist in Umetarou's manga series is based on a male friend (Mikoto Mikoshiba).

We also have the star of the drama club, Yuu Kashima--a handsome, charming, and charismatic prince figure who is the most popular among the girls in the school, and who is actually female (butchy girls are always the best!!).

Another resemblance between Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun and Ouran High School is the absurdity and laughter. The story cracks you up with caricatures and jokes of both the depiction of teenage romantic relationships in manga/anime, and of the lives and perceptions of manga artists. The feast of men might not be as essential in this series, however, the variety of guys and their somehow unintentionally hilarious interactions can definitely make up for the lost!

5. Kimi to Boku (You and Me.)

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: Oct 4, 2011 - Dec 27, 2011

This piece creates an atmosphere different from the other pieces we've introduced. It is more relaxing and free-spirited. There is no real story plot (well, if hanging out with a group of friends and talking non-sense all day counts as plot), but the story revolves around a bunch of guy friends where there's no real space for a serious female protagonist.

However, for those who grasp the true purpose of this recommendation, this piece resembles Ouran High School in one quintessential element: twins. When we have Hikaru and Kaoru in Ouran High School, there are Yuuta and Yuuki Asaba in Kimi to Boku. Both twin couples are inseparable. Both are highly dependent on each other. Both have their own secret language and know each other so well that you may think they could communicate telepathically.

And yet the twins are distinct in certain ways. Yuuta is more mature and responsible, while Yuuki is more free-spirited which could sometimes become inconsiderate.

Festive in the representation of male characters as it is, the piece is also rich in depicting the trivial yet weighty troubles that are particular to adolescence. The issues they are dealing with might not be as dramatic as those in Ouran High School, however, the male-bonding that entails is what we are aiming at.

6. Free!

  • Episodes: 12 (first season)/ 13 (second season)
  • Aired: Jul 4, 2013 - Sep 25, 2013 (first season)/ Jul 3, 2014 - Sep 25, 2014 (second season)

What can be more festive than a gang of teenage young men dipping their muscular bodies in fresh clear water, stretching and bending their muscles, and resurfacing with droplets of water dripping from their hair, arms, and thighs? That festival is called "Free!."

Since we have ventured into a realm where female protagonists are fading out, we might as well just follow it through. Free! is a story about five high school boys and their love for swimming (and for one another). The plot is mostly about their relationships with swimming and relay race, the meanings they give to swimming, and the significance of swimming as a team. But these have nothing to do with their resemblance to Ouran High School. As a main theme of this recommendation article, the resemblance lies in the men.

Haruka Nanase, the main character, represents the laconic and impenetrable. Makoto Tachibana is the tender, patient, mature, and sweet figure. Rei Ryugazaki is the calculative follower of theory (with glasses of course). Rin Matsuoka is the instinctive and reckless animal. And Nagisa Hazuki is the cute, perky, optimistic shyouta.

As in Ouran High School, all characters have their troubles and trials to face, and the beauty of following through the series (besides of the bodies and the muscles) is to travel with the characters and walk the journey of internal growth with them (while frantically devouring the feast of men).

And these are our picks! Let us know if you have any recommendations other than the ones we've listed!! We would love to see your comments!!
