6 Anime Like Tenchi Muyo! (Tenchi Muyou) [Recommendations]

Some people have all the luck when it comes to space women. Oh boy, Honey's loves this series, it's always fun to watch the classics! The Masaki family has many iterations! It would be far too easy to recommend 6 different Tenchi anime, though, wouldn't it? Tenchi is certainly no ordinary human, and shares genealogy with another world entirely. We would love to know how to grow a spaceship like a tree, or make a pet into a spaceship! Planet Jurai has some intense technology, with no need for fossil fuels. Someone get Jurai on the line, we have global warming to solve!

Many people recognize Tenchi from Toonami. Toonami's block heavily edited the show. Unfortunately, some episodes didn't even air because there was no dub for those at the time. “Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki” was renamed “Tenchi Muyo!” specifically for Toonami. As a result of the times, many people didn't get to see the full story of Tenchi. People who missed those should watch “Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki”. Chances are if you're reading this article you do know the full story of Tenchi, which is good! Tenchi was created by Masaki Kajishima, and the new Tenchi series currently airing has a final episode due out later in 2017.

Tenchi is hilarious, soulful, and action-packed! Wouldn't it be nice if someone fell into your backyard who could change your life for the better? Well, like we said before, some people have all the luck. From lighthearted to crazy ecchi, below are 6 Anime Like Tenchi Muyo!

Similar Anime to Tenchi Muyo!

1. Ah! My Goddess (Aa! Megami-sama! TV)

  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: Jan 2005 – Jul 2005

Keiichi Morisato has the worst luck in the world. No matter how nice the guy is, karma doesn't seem to care. Nothing goes Keiichi's way until Goddesses realize his life's situation is not at all normal. As a reward for being kind through tough times, he is granted a wish from the Goddess helpline (the ultimate tech support). Keiichi wishes for the Goddess in front of him to stay by his side forever. Belldandy (Goddess first-class rank) sends the wish to heaven for approval, and they grant his wish. With Belldandy by his side, the guilt-ridden Keiichi sees his luck start to improve. Unfortunately, so do darker forces.

Yggdrasil is the giant tree from Norse mythology that connects 9 worlds together. “Ah! My Goddess” also has an Yggdrasil tree, which acts as heaven's super-advanced wish-granting computer. Ayeka and Ryouko would be familiar with that concept, as most spaceships are grown from seeds on Jurai (the Greenpeace planet), much like a tree. Washu and Sasami would have a lot to talk about with Belldandy, because all three are Goddesses.

Tenchi and Keiichi have extremely complicated love lives. Keiichi is later visited by many of Belldandy's family members and friends from heaven. Tenchi is visited by several people from planet Jurai. Both of these characters might as well shop at the same store! Chances are if you liked Tenchi, you will most definitely want to give this one a shot!

2. Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid (Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon)

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: Jan 2017 – Apr 2017

Kobayashi sure is one lucky woman when she drinks! Unfortunately, like most people, after too much alcohol, she forgets what happened the night before. Kobayashi wakes up with a mild hangover and is greeted by an enormous dragon at her front door. Tooru (the dragon) transforms into her adorable maid-like form, and is welcomed inside of Kobayashi's apartment. It doesn't take long for Kobayashi to realize that she will be late for work, and that this is no dream. Kobayashi finally remembers running into the dragon after pounding down a few beers. Kobayashi said Tooru could stay with her as a maid!

Tooru is from another world, but ends up on Earth for a while. Tooru, like Princess Ayeka from “Tenchi Muyo!”, both make choices to go to Earth, and have people from their world looking for them. Not just any people, powerful people from their family are. They also both share the similar desire to stay on Earth because of someone who lives on it. Both Tooru and Ayeka are also many times stronger than a normal earthling. Tooru doesn't share Ayeka's taste in men, however, since she is completely infatuated with Kobayashi.

Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid is a brand new title for 2017, and the dub is available on Funimation's website. If you liked Tenchi, you need to check this out!

3. Tsugumomo

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Apr 2017 – 2017

Kazuya Kagami is a boy who is emotionally attached to his mother's kimono obi (clothing his mother used to wear). One day at school, Kazuya runs into a girl possessed by a wig, and she pushes him off the top of the school. Miraculously, his kimono obi transforms into a young girl named Kiriha, and saves his life. As fate would have it, his mother used to kill demons with Kiriha. Now belonging to Kazuya, the powerful Kiriha seeks to protect him. At the time of writing, “Tsugumomo” only has 4 episodes and is currently airing.

Malison is an invisible force that manifests creepy stuff if someone thinks too hard about it. Malison is also attracted to Kazuya, which gets the attention of Kiriha and Kukuri (a water goddess). Tenchi has the ability to manifest light-hawk wings (a powerful weapon, used only by the Goddesses). Understandably, that gets the attention of the Goddesses Washu, and Tsunami/Sasami. Fate seems to have chosen both Tenchi and Kazuya to be monitored by many powerful beings.

Kiriha has many things in common with Ryouko from “Tenchi Muyo!”. When Ryouko was imprisoned on Earth, she witnessed Tenchi grow from a kid to a teen (in spirit projection mode), before she broke free from her bonds. In “Tsugumomo” Kiriha witnesses Kazuya grow up in similar fashion, while in her obi form. Kiriha and Ryouko have an attachment to one person, and both are super powerful. Check this series out and keep your eye out for more episodes!

4. To LOVE-Ru

  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: Apr 2008 – Sep 2008

Rito Yuuki has a crush on a girl in his class named Haruna Sairenji. While in the bathtub, a naked space girl falls from the sky. In self-defense, Rito puts his arms in front of him, as she comes crashing through the roof of the bathroom. Do to his actions, Rito accidentally fondles the breasts of Lala Satalin Deviluke. Unbeknownst to Rito, it turns out fondling breasts on planet Deviluke, means you're giving a marriage proposal (because, of course it does). Lala accepts the proposal, and Rito's life proceeds to get more complicated! Now, every time Rito walks past his crush, she sees him with Lala. Rito tries to explain the full situation to Haruna, but things keep getting in his way.

Lala shares a lot in common with Ayeka in “Tenchi Muyo!”. Both are from another world, and have chosen to come to Earth for their own reasons. Lala is another character with powerful family members looking for her after she runs away. Honey's thinks the Earth should fire the person in charge of space alien immigration. Princess Ayeka is part a royal family, and pretty much engaged to Tenchi. Lala is also part of a royal family, and in turn, is also engaged.

Lala has an AI-Companion who provides rechargeable clothes. When Ryouko shows up, she provides a “cabbot” (combination of a cat and a rabbit) named Ryo-Ohki. Ryo-Ohki is adorable, and is also a killer spaceship. Jurai, however, is more peaceful when compared with Deviluke. Deviluke appears to mercilessly conquer planets. Juraians, in comparison, fight when they need to, but seem to have way better intentions. Though its humor may be too risqué for some (contains ecchi), it's definitely worth a shot if you liked Tenchi!

5. Omamori Himari

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jan 2010 – Mar 2010

We can sympathize with Yuuto Amakawa and his cat allergies. Unfortunately for Yuuto, he's going to have to get used to sneezing! One day when he's at school he gets attacked by a demon. Yuuto's ancestors were a long line of demon hunters, and the demons are out for revenge. Just when the situation looks dire, a girl named Himari Noihara jumps in to save the day. Himari is the sworn protector of Yuuto, and stayed with his family while Yuuto grew up. Himari is a beautiful girl, who also happens to be a cat demon. She is playful and often flirts with Yuuto, setting off his allergies. Yuuto, much to Himari's dismay, doesn't like killing the demons attacking him.

As a result of Yuuto's no-kill policy, more demon-girls start living with him. Both Tenchi and Yuuto suffer and benefit from their relationships. When Ryouko is first released from her prison on Earth, Ryouko and Tenchi weren't exactly on the best of terms. Ryouko was known as the demon who was sealed away. Tenchi is attacked by Ryouko, and then kidnapped by her. It isn't until later that Tenchi learns Ryouko is really a space pirate.

Yuuto goes through a similar encounter as Tenchi did with his “demon”. Yuuto has his life threatened by Shizuku (a water-dragon demon). Shizuku becomes intrigued that a demon-hunter won't kill a demon, and decides to crash at his place to see if it's true. Both Tenchi and Yuuto share a very kind personality, and just want to live normally. If you liked “Tenchi Muyo!”, you will want to watch this!

6. Kanokon: The Girl Who Cried Fox (Kanokon)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Apr 2008 – Jun 2008

Fair warning, “Kanokon” contains excessive sexual situations, we know that ecchi isn't for everybody, and if you're one of those people, stay away from this. With that being said, what is it with these high schools? Chizuru Minamoto has an overbearing crush on a boy (Kouta Oyamada) in high school, and it turns out she's a fox-deity. Kouta is relentlessly pursued by Chizuru for “romantic” reasons (the relationship is pretty one-sided). One day Chizuru tells Kouta that in order for them to stay together she has to merge with him, or she'll disappear. Chizuru possesses the boy, so she's allowed to continue their relationship. This merger also gives them the ability to destroy evil creatures.

Later in the show, Kouta meets up with Nozomu, and attempts to pay for her meal. Guess what, it turns out she's a wolf-spirit much like Chizuru. Nozomu then proceeds to fawn over Kouta, much like Chizuru. Now, here is where you can draw similarities. Much like Ayeka and Ryouko from “Tenchi Muyo!”, Nozomu and Chizuru fight. Their spats can be enormously destructive, as they are all super powerful. Both Tenchi and Kouta are caught in a tug of war they would rather not be a part of.

Honey's needs to throw another warning out there. This one is not for kids. If edited by Toonami, “Kanokon: The Girl Who Cried Fox”, would most likely be a “.gif” image. With that said, if you liked Tenchi, you may find something to like here!

Final Thoughts

Honey's Anime is looking towards the sky more often, you never know when destiny could land in your backyard! We're also going to try and start donations for runaway alien royalty. “Tenchi Muyo!” sure was one heck of a show to compare with others. What did you think of this article? I was born in Colorado Springs. I found myself around friends who liked to play video games and watch anime. The first anime I saw was 'The Slayers' original TV series on VHS. I will be going for a bachelor's degree in 'Health Information Management' starting August 1, 2017. Recently, I moved to Washington State and I am in a town that has less than 2000 people.
