Trigun, is an all time favorite, classic anime, featuring the iconic cowboy, Vash The Stampede. This anime has a unique mix of action, humor, science fiction and of course, gunfights. While this anime’s setting is the future, it resembles something more like an American wild west where we follow our protagonists around in a desert wasteland.

One of the most outstanding features of this anime is the unforgettable character Vash; his long red coat, spiky blonde hair and round sunglasses are screaming “I’m a bad boy” when in fact, our hero is very kind, funny and sort of silly. Wait; did we mention he carried around a .45 silver caliber and is a wanted man for $60 billion double dollars? Vash sure lives up to his name “stampede” or “The Humanoid Typhoon” because any town he steps in, he attracts intense gunfights that leave the place in ruins. This is what makes this anime so great; the story revolves around this character’s morale and dangerous lifestyle which is contradicted with Vash’s no-killing rule.

Let’s say you already watched and liked Trigun, but now you are hungry for more anime like it’s kind? Well, thank us later because the list below is right on target.

Aim, set and go!

2. Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X)

  • Episodes: 94
  • Aired: January 10, 1996 – September 8, 1998

Rurouni Kenshin is hands down one of the most popular and well known in anime history. The story is set in Edo period and Meiji era Japan; making it a historical, samurai action anime. Kenshin Himura is a masterless ex-samurai in the early ages of Meiji era and he is a double wanted man first, because in this period in time, swords begun to be banned in the streets of Japan so he is constantly harassed by police and townsmen for his sword and second because he has a terrible past that earned him the name of Hitokiri Battousai, and many men want him dead.

Kenshin no longer lives by the name Battousai and now has yearned to fight without taking lives. In his journey to Tokyo he meets with a young woman named Kaoru Kamiya, owner of a Dojo that shares his “fight but not kill” idea. As a wanderer he strives to continue his journey and not relate to anyone but for some divine fate always ends up back at Kamiya’s dojo, every time ending up followed by fighters who look up to him and his ways. This anime shows accurate old Japan backgrounds and ways of living of the people, as well as a story so intense and fulfilling that it makes sure you’ll never forget it.

Rurouni Kenshin has more similarities with Trigun than you think. While their fighting styles are complete opposites, guns and swords, Vash and Kenshin live by the rule of no killing and seeing the good in others. Both characters are wanted men with a violent dark past that wins them their famous nicknames. They are both known as legendary hunters and everyone is simply determined on trying to get on their nerve to see their “true power”of inhuman strenght killing.

3. Cowboy Bebop

  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: April 3, 1998 – April 24, 1999

Another anime classic joins the list. Cowboy Bebop is set in a distant future where humans live in space and many of them become bounty hunters for a living. More than just random bounties, the story is focused in the main character Spike Spiegel and his quest on finding someone. While his attitude is like that of a loner, he is almost always accompanied by other characters that, like him, also live in the ship named Bebop; everyone has a unique character that make the story even more rich and meaningful.

Cowboy Bebop is mainly action and drama with a bit of humor on the side, a perfect mix for this sci-fi adventure. Spike is the main focus of the plot, but certainly the attention doesn't rotate only around him, the other characters also have their shine. Whether it’s a sexy girl, like Faye or a comic relief hacker girl, Ed, and even her extra adorable corgi, Ein; all of the characters add into the comic relief and jaw dropping plot twists of this series.

Well, the name says it all. Cowboy Bebop and Trigun are set to have the same schematic; a journey, a hunter and a bounty. Like Trigun, the anime hooks you in with classy Jazz music in the intro song, and by the end of episode one, you’re completely determined to watch the whole season in two days. These two old fashioned hunters with insane fighting skills is something you’ll surely want to see and compare yourself.

4. Sunabouzu (Desert Punk)

trigun-300x404 6 Anime Like Trigun [Recommendations]
  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: October 6, 2004–March 30, 2005

Unique clothes, well-earned nickname, hot dessert, vandals, bounty hunters, guns and amazing fights… sound familiar? Well you’re a bit wrong! This Guy’s name is Kanta Mizuno and he’s a pervy bounty hunter. Comedy and Ecchi are the strong points of Desert Punk, but there’s tons of action and gunpowder involved as well. Our protagonist is a mercenary that is known by the name of Desert Punk, or demon of the desert, and he doesn't care about anyone or anything unless it involves beautiful girls.

He’s not very pro-life as he doesn't really care for others, if they live or die it’s not his deal. His only concern is his reputation and whether or not he gets it on with a girl named Junko or, anyone else who is offering a “good” time with him. Most of his adventures are a mix of comedy on how he tries to get his reputation back and keeps on failing while he somehow joins a political position to change the life in the desert.. or is it just an excuse to get the girls?

The most similar characteristics of Desert Punk with Trigun is that the story’s background is a desert wasteland and that the character Desert Punk is, like Vash, an extraordinary fighter.

5. Gungrave

  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: October 7, 2003 – March 30, 2004

Violence, Action, Drama, monsters and guns, is what Gungrave is all about. The main conflict of this mafia style anime revolves around two comrades, a man of few words, Brandon Heat, and the ambitious Harry McDowel. Oh! Let’s not forget the young girl, Mika, that brings Brandon back from the dead!

Brandon Heat is brought back from the dead, and he’s not happy at his friend Harry. The story of “Beyond the grave,” Brandon is told by jumping in time back and forth, and by fragments of memories of the characters. But don’t worry, this doesn't spoil the fun of the story, but instead makes it so that you always look forward on learning why something has happened. Monsters and power drunk controlling freaks, how can something possibly go right in this series? hang on to your thoughts because this anime has a very sharp ending.

Besides the art style, Gungrave’s story is not directly connected with Trigun but the main characters remind you of the bromance that Vash and his side kick, Nicholas Wolfman, once had. Of course, the most remarkable connection between these two anime is that they have the same creator in common: Yasuhiro Nightow.

6. Gun X Sword

  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: July 4, 2005– December 26, 2005

Gun X Sword stars a widower named Van, who seeks revenge on his late wife’s killer. His hatred for the clawed killer is shared with the other characters that later join his search for the same man. Saving a town surely wins some popularity points but in Van’s case it won him too many points with a young girl called Wendy Garret, who suddenly proposes marriage to him over and over in exchange for his service and skill for hunting down her brother’s kidnapper, the clawed man. This anime is filled with good ‘ol action, light comedy, drama and mecha.

Gun X Sword is like Trigun because they both are situated in a poor desert like western wasteland. At the beginning of the series, you feel like you’re re-watching a newer version of Trigun; the main character, Van, has a similar personality to Vash’s. Van is also being hunted down by vandals, carries around a custom made weapon, has inhuman fighting abilities and encounters an innocent girl that follows him around for a reason. If you want something that looks just like Trigun, Gun X Sword is down the same aisle.
