1. Tactics

  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: Oct. 2004 - Mar. 2005

People who are often different are either ignored or bullied. That is what happened to Ichinomiya Kentarou, as he has special abilities different from other people. Put simply, Kentarou can see demons, and in fact, he can befriend them. On a certain day, a demon told him that he can claim a very powerful tengu if he gives it a name. Kentarou decides to call the demon Haruka if he does manage to find it, but years have passed and he still doesn’t have a clue where to find the demon he’s after. Until he got news of the nearby shrine that might hold the great tengu.

Tactics and Uraboku is similar in a way because both protagonists have a unique ability that has caused them to be secluded away from their kind. Yuki and Kentarou also share the same personality; such as being kind to the people around them, and sometimes having their own moments of self-doubt. They also have demons beside them that serve them. Yuki has the beautiful opast -a high-class demon- Luka as his protector, while in Tactics, Kentarou has the oni-eating tengu Haruka at his disposal. Tactics is lighter than Uraboku’s dark vibe. Although Tactics is not classified as a BL anime like Uraboku, fans of the genre will enjoy this show as it does have a lot of BL undertones.

2. Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler)

  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: Oct. 2008 - Mar. 2009

Ciel Phanthomhive has everything that anyone could dream off. A nice home, a nice family, and overall a privileged protected life. Until tragedy strikes during his 10th Birthday when his parents were killed, his home burned down and he experienced humiliation like no other. With revenge in mind, he summons a demon and forms a contract with him. Months after the incident, Ciel Phantomhive is back with an enigmatic butler beside him.

Kuroshitsuji and Uraboku share the same basic elements of being an action and supernatural anime. The only difference between these two is that Kuroshitsuji has that dark humor throughout the whole show, and of course, it takes place in a different era. Both shows have this certain mysterious gothic atmosphere that keeps the audience at the edge of their seats. Similarly, our main protagonist in both anime is being protected by a handsome and powerful demon. Although both of the demons have different reasons for protecting their masters, they both do their best to please them and serve only them. Just like Tactics, Kuroshitsuji is also not considered a BL anime, but it has BL undertones much like Uraboku. If you have enjoyed Uraboku then there is no doubt that you will enjoy Kuroshitsuji. Kuroshitsuji currently has 2 sequels, an OVA, and a bunch of specials that will keep your attention for quite a while especially if you are waiting for anime that are currently airing this season.

Luka and Soubi are their main support and the source of their strength. They are also the ones who know the truth about the mysteries that surround them. Throughout the whole series, the relationship between these two couples develops intimately. Both couples grow together and the sweet moments between them are definitely one of the things to watch out for. Go check out Loveless as it has a good intriguing plot much like Uraboku.

4. Monochrome Factor

  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: Apr. 2008-Sept. 2008

Nikaidou Akira is seemingly living a normal life when a man suddenly tells him that they are destined for each other. Anyone would be suspicious of the sudden confrontation so Akira naturally ignored the mysterious man, albeit being shocked. He meets the man again, however, when he is attacked by a monster. The mysterious man said that the only way to defeat the monster is for Akira to transform in his Shin -beings from the shadow world- form.

Much like in Uraboku and our other titles in this list, Nikaidou Akira has been sucked into a new world after meeting with an enigmatic man, Shirogane. Same as Yuki in Uraboku who was reincarnated, Akira was Ryuko in his past life. This is the reason why Shirogane is very attached to Akira, as he deeply liked Ryuko during their time. Shirogane also waits for the awakening of Akira as king, just as how the Giou Clan from Uraboku waits for Yuki’s power to awaken. The show is filled with good looking boys that you can ship or simply to admire. This anime is hilarious throughout, but the action and the supernatural aspect of it will surely not disappoint you.

5. Yami no Matsuei (Descendants of Darkness)

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: Oct. 2000-Dec. 2000

Asato Tsuzuki has been working as a shinigami for over 70 years, ever since he mysteriously died at the age of 26. His job is to put the dead in their proper realms. He does his job splendidly but he can’t find a partner that will stick with him, as shinigami work in pairs. He finally finds a partner that will stay with him and that is none other than the stubborn Kurosaki Hisoka. Together, they solve crimes, and in the process, they become closer. But not all is easy and well as Dr. Muraki Kazuka is ready at any time to play with the dark secrets that haunt both Tsuzuki and Hisoka.

Again, this anime has action and supernatural elements that you can enjoy if you have watched Uraboku. Yami no Matsuei is much like Uraboku in terms of plot. They investigate and solve unexplainable occurrences that will lead them to the ultimate villain of the whole story. Yuki and Hisoka almost share the same abilities of having strong empathy towards other people, and seeing through the memories of the people around them. Both shows are shounen-ai so you can expect some great development with the relationship of Tsuzuki and Hisoka, much like with Yuki and Luka. It is a very old show but Yami no Matsuei is definitely a must watch if you want something very similar to Uraboku.

6. Honoo no Mirage (Mirage of Blaze)

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: Jan. 2002-Apr. 2002

Naoe unexpectedly shows up to Takaya Ougi and informs him that he is the reincarnation of Kagetora Uesugi. Takaya, who wants nothing but normalcy in his life, refuses to believe this. However, Naoe has other plans and awakens the power inside of Takaya to exorcise evil spirits. As the two work together to stop evil, Takaya begins to remember his past and the sacrifices that Naoe made just for him.

The concept of reincarnation behind Uraboku is also prevalent here in Honoo no Mirage. At first, Yuki and Takaya don’t believe that they are not normal. They learned about themselves after meeting a mysterious stranger on a certain day. Neither character remembers their past at all, unlike some characters who were reincarnated but immediately remember their past lives. It doesn’t take too long for them to accept the truth and they do what they can of what is expected of them. Yuki and Takaya also have their own dark pasts which play a big part in what is happening to them right now. Unlike Yuki and Luka who seemed to warm up quickly, Takaya and Naoe’s relationship took a little bit of time to develop and blossom. Overall, if you liked Uraboku, then Honoo no Mirage is another good anime to put in your watch list.
