1. Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell

  • System/Platform: Xbox, PC, PS2, GameCube, GBA, Mobile, N-Gage, PS3 (HD)
  • Publisher: Ubisoft Entertainment, Aspyr Media (Mac OS X)
  • Developer: Ubisoft Montreal, Ubisoft Shanghai (PS2, GameCube)
  • Release Date: Nov 12, 2002

On April 2004 Georgina billionaire Kombayn Nikoladze attempts to take over after the president of Georgia is killed. During this chaos two CIA operatives go missing causing the National Security Agency to work with Third Echelon by sending one of their own. That agent is Sam Fisher a former Navy Seal with years of experience in deadly spy missions. Sam’s task is to enter Tbilisi, Georgia and find the missing operatives as quickly as possible. Sam will be on his own for the most part and will need to rely on Irving Lamber—an old friend of Sam—and a technical expert by the name of Anna Grimsdottir if he wishes to complete this mission successfully.

It was a guaranteed notion that we would start off our 6 Games Like GoldenEye 007 list with a game that featured a spy. Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell—or just Splinter Cell for short—has become a well-known title thanks to Ubisoft Montreal’s great handling of the gameplay. Players may not be killing enemies in first person like GoldenEye 007 but instead, in a third person perspective. However, like GoldenEye 007 players can use not only weapons to handle a situation but spy gadgets like sticky shockers and gas grenades. Stealth is the name of the game in Splinter Cell and players need to rely heavily on making sure Sam’s presence is akin to that of a mouse which required patience and clever planning. Needless to say this method of gameplay reminds us of trying to do the same in GoldenEye 007 and we really loved Splinter Cell for it.

2. TimeSplitters 2

  • System/Platform: PS2, Gamecube, Xbox
  • Publisher: Eidos Interactive
  • Developer: Free Radical Design
  • Release Date: Oct 9, 2002

Humanity is nearing its end in TimeSplitters 2. When the alien forces known as TimeSplitters began altering the timeline, humanity began feeling the repercussions greatly. Out of available options the governments of Earth send out Sergeant Cortez and Corporal Hart to stop the TimeSplitters in whatever way possible. During an event to stop the alien’s from using crystals that give them the time manipulation abilities, Cortez is forced to enter into the past taking on a new persona in hopes of killing any TimeSplitters in that time line. Get ready for a time destroying FPS title courtesy of TimeSplitters 2.

Frantic FPS gameplay and solid multiplayer made GoldenEye 007 so much fun. TimeSplitters 2 from developers Free Radical Design mirrors that theme with its own take on how to make a successful FPS title. Players will leap into different time lines and fight against various baddies in hopes of saving the future from the evil TimeSplitter race. However, if you got bored of the single player—though we don’t know if that’s possible—you could play multiplayer on the same screen with several of your friends to partake in Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag or BagTag—a mode akin to king of the hill—for some serious multiplayer fun. TimeSplitters 2 is a game that like GoldenEye 007 we here at Honey’s Anime find ourselves playing from time to time and you should definitely play it yourselves to see why.

3. Half-Life

  • System/Platform: PC, PS2
  • Publisher: Sierra Studios, Valve Corporation (digital)
  • Developer: Valve
  • Release Date: Nov 18, 1998

Black Mesa is about to undergo a very large experiment, and they need the best of the best. Gordon Freeman is soon to arrive to help partake in said experiment. Gordon equips a HEV suit for protection and gets to work right away. However, during the experiment, something horrible happens and to an alien dimension opens up in Black Mesa. Now, Gordon must somehow escape the facility as it blows up around him all while discovering the truth behind Black Mesa’s ventures with technology.

The Half-Life series is usually referred to as developer Valve’s best work but in particular, the first one is where the series started truly. Players assume the role of Gordon as they fight against various baddies inside Black Mesa to hopefully escape. Half-Life mirrors GoldenEye 007 by having solid understanding of what makes a FPS title so amazing thanks to great controls and plenty of weapons to use as they blast through numerous aliens. Half-Life 2 and the subsequent sequels may be considered amazing as well but like GoldenEye 007, everything has a beginning and Half-Life’s beginning is what we feel best suited this awesome list. Probably the biggest question you’ll ask while playing Half-Life is what weapon should I use next to take down that headcrab in the corner?

Far Cry 3 may not involve spies but that doesn’t stop it from being one heck of a ride. Players get to take control of Jason as he shoots and destroys and island that’s fully explore able in Far Cry 3. The reason we have Far Cry 3 on our 6 Games Like GoldenEye 007 list is due to the nature of the gameplay being fun and free thanks to players being able to handle missions in their own way, all too similar to GoldenEye 007’s concept. While there is Far Cry 4 available now, Far Cry 3 was easily one of our personal favorites and really captures what GoldenEye 007 did right with its gameplay, giving players freedom in how to approach a situation.
