6 Games Like Power Stone [Recommendations]

The Dreamcast was the last console Sega was known for, and it was ahead of its time when it first released! Sega may have lost the console war, but they certainly had some amazing games. “Power Stone” was one of those games; you could even play as the massive end-game bosses in story mode! For many, “Power Stone” (and Power Stone 2) was the “Smash Bros” of the Dreamcast era; it even featured throwing things in the arena at opponents. Upon gathering three stones, players unleashed the “Power Stone” version of what has come to be known as a “Smash Attack”; “Power Stone” came first, however, and is not forgotten! Another thing that separated “Power Stone” from a lot of fighters on the market was its use of depth in the arenas; sure, it was 3D, but the unique 3D depth added a level of fun most fighters to this day don't have!

“Power Stone” and its sequel had a 3D boxing-arena style for their levels, allowing the graphic designers to add a surprising amount of detail to the maps, and even constantly morphing stages. Its sequel, “Power Stone 2”, introduced many to the concept of a 4-player fighter way before “Smash Bros” was ever conceived; leaving people wanting more from their fighters after the Dreamcast died. Many fighter games exist on the market, but there are fighters that have matched and even surpassed “Power Stone”; after all, “Power Stone” was released in 1999. Time beats up on everything, but “Power Stone” and its sequel still hold up well. And if you're wanting more, you'll find 6 more games that are similar on this list!

1. LASTFIGHT

  • System/Platform: PC, Linux, Macintosh, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
  • Publisher: Piranaking
  • Developer: Piranaking
  • Release Date: May 19, 2016

“LASTFIGHT” is pretty much a re-skin of the original “Power Stone”; you even collect 3 McGuffins that turn you into your super form. “LASTFIGHT” has a very short story mode, but if you're looking for a modern-day “Power Stone” here it is! Everything is here from the 3D depth of the levels, to the stones; which are re-skinned as cogs, ninja stars, and other things! However, while this is a good attempt at remaking “Power Stone”, its story falls on its face, because only 2 characters are playable in story mode (and this is a fighter). Most people who buy this probably won't care about the story though; 2 vs 2 fighting is back, and reminds many of Power Stone 2! Some of us at Honey's absolutely loved “LASTFIGHT”, the 2 vs 2 play is nostalgic!

An official “Power Stone 3” would sure be nice to see, but “LASTFIGHT” comes close! People can blitz through the story content in less than an hour; especially if you throw things found in the various arenas. LASTFIGHT's story mode has something to do with the distribution of drugs or something. The plot gets mangled quickly, and it’s essentially the same story for both story characters (which is a major bummer). Where the game shines the most is in its multiplayer battles, however, and the 8/10 rating on steam tells you that it’s worth playing; even if the difficulty curve is a bit steep at times. If you liked Power Stone, you’ll want to swallow the $15.00 price tag; and buy it.

2. Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite

  • System/Platform: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
  • Publisher: Capcom
  • Developer: Capcom
  • Release Date: Coming Sep 19, 2017

“Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite” isn’t really the same type of 3D fighter that “Power Stone” was, but it has a few things worth mentioning. First off, the colorful cast of characters, and flashy special effects in “MVC: I” are a feast for the eyes; the same goes for “Power Stone”. From what most can see of “MVC: I”, you can utilize the infinity stones in battle; you’ll find a familiar concept in “Power Stone”! Both games feature powerful stones that can be used to unleash massive attacks! “Power Stone” shares the same name as one of the Infinity Stones as well! “Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite” has the advantage of being able to use well-known characters established by their brands making the demand rise for their fighter; “Power Stone” has memorable characters too, but they’re just not as well known.

“Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite” is due to release soon and will feature a villain from Mega Man X’s past, Sigma! Ultron and Sigma both have the same objective; Sigma acts like software and can control machines, and Ultron provides their physical body as they seek the destruction of mankind. Heroes will attempt to put an end to their evil scheme as they fight the newly merged villain “Ultron Sigma”. If you liked Power Stone, you should get your pre-order now!

3. Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers

  • System/Platform: Nintendo Switch
  • Publisher: Capcom
  • Developer: Capcom
  • Release Date: May 26, 2017

“USFII: TFC” shares a large roster of characters, and even a few characters players haven’t seen before! You’ll block special attacks, punches, kicks; then burn, electrify, “sonic boom”, and many other things to achieve victory. You’ll fight to prove you’re the best fighter there is, and for your own cause; like in “Power Stone”! This “Street Fighter” game is an updated version of a classic, which can now be taken on the go with your Switch! With the ability to go online; fighting on the streets in 2D has never been this much fun!

Power Stone has a different playstyle than Street Fighter, but the essence of the story is very similar. Ryu and Ken want to be the best fighter there is, and save the day from an evil villain; just like everyone in both games. “Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers” did take criticism for charging too much money, according to many people, because it’s an updated version of a very old game; but it’s still worth playing! For many, the “Street Fighter” games are the starting point for their love of fighters, so get out there and “Hadouken” some faces!

4. Super Smash Bros Wii U

  • System/Platform: 3DS, Wii U
  • Publisher: Nintendo
  • Developer: Bandai Namco Games
  • Release Date: Oct. 3, 2014

Once upon a time, “Smash Bros” was made for the N64, and contained no “smash ball” abilities; it was a bare bones cross-over fighter! Nintendo has since evolved “SSB” into one of the best fighting games that exists, period. Some of the games had attempted a story, and some of them never did; but they’re all fun! Most people love to have fun, and “Super Smash Bros Wii U” is fun that’s pure and unfiltered (the good stuff)! The “Power Stone” games are very much like “SSB”; you can throw things, use weapons, get “rekt” by the stages themselves, and even pull off super abilities!

In the “Smash Bros” games that come after the N64 version, you have the “Smash Attacks”, which you use after obtaining the ball; in “Power Stone”, its 3 Stones! This version of the “SSB” franchise has the largest roster of characters to date; it includes characters like Cloud Strife, Bayonetta, Mega Man, Corrin, and even Ryu from “Street Fighter”! Online fighters have never been this much fun to play, and if you liked “Power Stone”, “SSB Wii U” surpasses it in almost every way; except for the 3D morphing arenas! So, you know, go buy it; or wait for a Switch version, whichever comes first!

5. Dragon Ball: Xenoverse

  • System/Platform: PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One
  • Publisher: Bandai Namco Games
  • Developer: Dimps Corporation, Bandai Namco Games
  • Release Date: Feb. 24, 2015

“DBX” is a very colorful and flashy game; much like “Power Stone”! History has been changed in the Dragon Ball universe, and it’s up to you to restore it! Create your character, and join iconic heroes like Goku and Trunks attempting to restore the timeline to normal! Like in “Power Stone 2” there are multiple players on the battlefield, and like in “Power Stone 2” (and Power Stone) there are surprisingly large boss battles! It’s also a 3D fighter, and has a few moving stages reminiscent of the “Power Stone” games. Power Stone has a character by the name of “Wang Tang” who looks suspiciously like a Super Saiyan when he’s transformed by the stones; he even has a spirit bomb-like attack!

In true Dragon Ball fashion, you can go Super Saiyan (and other things) in “DBX”, and you feel more powerful; also sort of like when you have all the “Power Stones”. Both fighters were designed with anime in mind, and “Power Stone” had an anime based off the game! DBX was based off the Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super shows, and has online battles capable of an insane 3 vs 3 structure. So, if you liked the chaos in “Power Stone”, check out DBX!

6. Injustice 2

  • System/Platform: Andriod, IOS (iPhone/iPad), PlayStation 4, Xbox One
  • Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
  • Developer: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Warner Bros., NetherRealm Studios
  • Release Date: May 9, 2017

“Injustice: Gods Among Us” asks the question; “what would happen if Superman goes crazy?”; everyone now has their answer, and people are now well into the sequel, “Injustice 2”. DC makes a large comeback with the Injustice series, and features stages that have devastating dangers that can be triggered, and players can even throw things on the ground; like in Power Stone! There are even morphing stages in the form of transitions, which are usually triggered by someone falling through a floor or something similar. Both games have mastered the art of using the very levels themselves as weapons!

Five years after Batman takes the evil version of Superman down in “Gods Among Us”, a larger threat reveals itself in the form of “Brainiac”. Brainiac seeks to take the Earth for himself, and Batman is left wondering if he should release Superman from his prison to help. Faced with possible Armageddon, both the heroes and even some of the villains team up to take down Earth’s greatest threat.

Final Thoughts

Rest in peace Dreamcast, and may your games continue to inspire us, we salute you! Man, if someone would just make a Power Stone 3 everyone would lose their collective minds; like they did when they announced Shenmue 3 back in 2015. “LASTFIGHT” comes close to “Power Stone”, but it is a long way from an actual “Power Stone” game. Oh well, time to go play some more of it anyway! There are so many games out there like “Virtua Fighter” that had awesome 3D style gameplay, but not in the way “Power Stone” did it! Some of us feel that “Power Stone” and “Power Stone 2” did 3D fighting the correct way. We sure hope you enjoyed the list, and feel free to comment!

I was born in Colorado Springs. I found myself around friends who liked to play video games and watch anime. The first anime I saw was 'The Slayers' original TV series on VHS. I will be going for a bachelor's degree in 'Health Information Management' starting August 1, 2017. Recently, I moved to Washington State and I am in a town that has less than 2000 people.
