6 Games Like Shadow of the Colossus [Recommendations]

INTRODUCTION / OPENING PARAGRAPH

You wander an open field for what seems like minutes, nothing in sight but beautiful mountains and lush vistas populated by nothing but sounds and your own horse’s gallops. Finally you reach what seems like a climbable cliff, you remove yourself from your horse and climb despite your hands getting number and weaker with each minute that passes. You finally reach the summit and notice that the once unpopulated landscape has been hiding a giant massive creature that you are tasked with taking down to save your love that is the essence of the amazing game known as Shadow of The colossus. Like the journey you take in Shadow of the Colossus, we here at Honey’s Anime took our own journey into crafting a list just as epic and breathtaking as the game featured here today. That’s right everyone, today’s recommendation list is 6 Games Like Shadow of the Colossus.

Shadow of the Colossus is one of those unique gaming titles out there in the world of video games. With only one main enemy type to fight—in this case the Colossus bosses—and a lack of almost any narrative outside some dialogue here and there, we really had to work together here at Honey’s Anime to bring you this list. Thankfully as a team, we realized there are actually some very good titles like Shadow of the Colossus. Some of the games here will bring you into worlds populated with those who seek a power unseen and other titles will bring back a legendary hero from games long ago. Our 6 Games Like Shadow of the Colossus will surely find you something to play next or make you want to revisit.

  • System/Platform: PS4
  • Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
  • Developer: SIE Japan Studio
  • Release Date: Dec 6, 2016

Many years ago, something very odd occurred to you and the memory never fades. When you were a child you were thrown into an odd circular area. It doesn’t take long for your eyes to focus on a very large cat like bird that is chained up. Deciding to help it and then named it Trico, the two of you begin to have a bond as you escape this odd area and will come to rely on one another for support. You and Trico will need to be prepared though as the environment and its enemies don’t wish for your escape to be a simple one.

When you played Shadow of the Colossus you came to rely on your horse for support quite often. Whether you needed transportation or companionship to not feel so alone in the valley, Agro—the horse’s name—was there to help out. In The Last Guardian Trico and the boy are very similar in this third person exploration title. Players will need to use Trico for combat and for safety as they traverse the lands to find an escape. Thanks to beautiful graphics and solid gameplay, The Last Guardian makes this epic adventure all the more satisfying and we highly recommend fans of Shadow of the Colossus to try it out.

2. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

  • System/Platform: PS4

  • Developer: Naughty Dog
  • Release Date: May 10, 2016

When Nathan Drake’s brother returns from what seems like the dead, it seems that Nathan is once more bought into the world of adventurer one last time. Sam’s claim that he needs Nathan’s help in grabbing an artifact that once they tried to obtain long ago and failed horribly. Seemingly pressured into joining his brother—but equally wanting another adventure—Nathan makes up a lie and heads with his Sam and longtime friend Sully to go on their last grand adventure ever…

Maybe you love Shadow of the Colossus’s adventure-like qualities but want even more in your game. Well look no further than Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End which wraps up Nathan Drake’s tale in an epic finale. Players will assume Nate in this third person shooter and adventure title as they go up against others who want the treasure Nate and Sam are after. With amazing graphics, a strong narrative and plenty of treasures to nab, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is easily one of the best games in the series. So why not trade in that sword for some guns and get ready to live the life of an epic explorer on his last journey?

  • Developer: thatgamecompany
  • Release Date: Mar 13, 2012

Before you lies a giant desert. With no set goal and so idea, your eyes wander toward a giant tower. Along the way there are signs that other civilizations were once here and you wonder what happened to them. Regardless all you know is you want to make it to the glowing tower but there are robotic creatures who don’t seem to want that to occur. Now then, are you ready to begin an epic adventure in the world of Journey?

Shadow of the Colossus and Journey may have different gaming mechanics but these two titles are quite similar to one another. Like in Shadow of the Colossus, Journey is geared towards those who want to create stories from what little they have. Why did these villages disappear and where did the inhabitants go? There are clues to be found to answer these but in the end the adventure you go on is more important. Definitely give this third person adventure game a try if you love to not be bound by linear quests and want a freedom to explore what you want in your own pace.

4. Dark Souls 3

  • System/Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox One
  • Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment, FromSoftware (JP)
  • Developer: FromSoftware
  • Release Date: Mar 24, 2016

The world of Lothric is an odd and dying land thanks to the Age of Fire reaching an end. This event has caused those who have died to rise once more and become the Undead who roam the land as cursed beings. If any hope is to return to the land of Lothric, then the fires must be rekindled and a new Lord of Cinder needs to be birthed. The Ashen One—your character—aims to perform this feat having already failed once. Before you lies armies of undead and beings that are comparable to giants however you must not falter in your quest and must push through if hope is to return to the land of Lothric.

The quest in Shadow of the Colossus is a mixture of being semi alone and fighting giant beings ten times your size; this is mirrored in Dark Soul 3. In this third person action title, players will fight against tons of different enemies all while dying plenty of times in equal measure. However, death is meant to be a learning tool as the player will then learn from their mistakes and get better and better. Unlike Shadow of the Colossus, you can summon others to help you take down enemies and bosses alike but true veterans will find that going at it alone is definitely a true experience as well. The true similarities between Dark Souls 3 and The Shadow of the Colossus lies in the narrative though. Both titles have plenty to explore to find what the story really holds, but at the same time, it’s up to interpretation at times as well. If you want a hard title—and we mean that folks—then try your hand at Dark Souls 3.

5. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

  • System/Platform: Wii U, Nintendo Switch
  • Publisher: Nintendo
  • Developer: Nintendo EPD
  • Release Date: Mar 3, 2017

Link returns in an all new adventure this time in a very different Hyrule than fans are used to. Link awakens having apparently slept for 100 years inside a pod of some sort. During his slumber, the world of Hyrule has been ravaged by Ganon and underwent a “Great Calamity”. Now Link is tasked with somehow restoring order back to this world all while dealing with the forces of Ganon. However, Link’s adventure will be even bigger than ever before in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Zelda fans rejoice, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild returns us to the lands we love—because we’re huge fans of Zelda here at Honey’s Anime—all while adding an exploration element akin to Shadow of the Colossus. While there may be a lot more enemies to deal with than Shadow of the Colossus, the world in Link’s new journey is the largest ever and clearly allows players a freedom unseen in any of the past Zelda titles. In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, players can traverse almost anything thanks to a new grip mechanic—seen also in Shadow of the Colossus—making Link’s world almost fully open for exploration. With tons of quests, hidden dungeons and epic battles The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is clearly one of the greatest titles to come out as of recent and shares a lot in common with Shadow of Colossus.

  • Release Date: Sept 24. 2001

Along the way, he ends up meeting Yorda, a ghostly young girl who speaks in an unknown language to the young boy. Regardless, the young boy knows he must help her escape this odd place. However, with treacherous environments and odd shadow beings that seem to want to capture Yorda, this quest seems to be anything but simple.

Team Ico before Shadow of the Colossus created Ico and it’s why we end this list with this incredible title. Players will explore an odd setting filled with puzzles and hidden threats. The young boy has Yorda with him and at times she will be helpful to solve puzzles but other times, the players will need to guard her and help her when danger occurs. Ico is considered a classic title and if you have never played it before, you can even grab it bundled with The Shadow of Colossus on a HD remaster on the PS3. However, even if you play the classic PS2 version, we know you’ll enjoy Ico and come to understand why we had to end this list of 6 Games Like Shadow of the Colossus with Ico of all games.
