3. Chromehounds

  • Publisher: Sega, FromSoftware
  • Developer: FromSoftware
  • Release Date: Jun 29, 2006

In an undetermined future mankind has developed robotic machines known as HOUNDS. Each country has developed their own versions of HOUNDS to give themselves a strategic advantage in case of a possible war. When the Sal Kar Empire begins to get nervous at the overwhelming power of each nation, they begin to build forts and bases all around their empire. The nations known as Morskoj and Tarakia decide to go on the offensive and begin to launch an attack on Sal Kar to prevent them from gaining too much power. As an unnamed pilot you’re about to enter a new war—dubbed the Neroimus war—to learn all that you can about the different HOUND units.

FromSoftware usually is known for their Armored Core series—which may or may not be on this list as well—but only so many gamers know about their Xbox 360 exclusive in the form of Chromehounds. At one time players would go online and battle it out for dominance using various mechs that could be customized in great detail. However, since 2009 Chromehounds’ online servers have been shut down to the public. Luckily, players can still enjoy the tutorial mode which allows players to enter into different mechs and play out a pseudo story mode. Honestly, Chromehounds is pretty old and can be found for a really affordable price and like Titanfall it will allow you to feel the strategic thinking and movement only a mecha based game can do best.

Want speed over power and or a nice mixture of the two, Armored Core V allows you to do that in extremely meticulous detail. When Dingo and his mining team find an Orbital Frame hidden away on the moon, they are attacked by BAHRAM who were searching for the Frame themselves. Despite attempting to fight back with Jehuty, Dingo is shot and seemingly killed by Nohman, the leader of BAHRAM and left to waste away. If Dingo should leave Jehuty his organs will fail and he shall die, so now he must assist Ken and stop BAHRAM as the new pilot of Jehuty.

Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner is a fast paced action ordinated mech game from developer Konami Computer Entertainment Japan. Players will pilot Jehuty as they maneuver in space and 3D environments blasting other robots and mechs with various weapons and attacks. While we love Titanfall 1 and 2 there are times we wished they were a bit more like anime titles and that’s why we love Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner. We do recommend the HD Collection—which contains the first Zone of the Enders title as well as the second—as the graphics are vastly improved over the original PS2 version. With an amazing story, fluid robot filled combat and an epic soundtrack you need to pick up Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner and add it to your collection no robot titles.

6. Steel Battalion

  • System/Platform: Xbox
  • Publisher: Capcom, Microsoft Studios
  • Developer: Capcom, Nude Maker, Capcom Production Studio 4
  • Release Date: Sept 12, 2002

We here at Honey’s Anime know the pain of wishing to be able to feel what it’s like to pilot a giant robot. The idea of being inside a cockpit with all those various knobs and sticks just seems like a dream that is unobtainable or is it? Developers Capcom, Nude Maker and Capcom Production Studio 4 joined forces and brought to the world an incredible title called Steel Battalion. This amazing Xbox game allows you to use a giant controller that seems straight out of a mech anime full of joysticks, throttles and even an eject button! Those days of dreaming what it would be like to be inside a giant mech have ended thanks to Steel Battalion.

Now in all seriousness, we here at Honey’s Anime wish we could have ended our list with some of the other titles above and been proud to say it was the best way to end our list. However, no gaming title above gives players the true feeling of piloting a mech better than Steel Battalion. While Titanfall 1 and 2 may give you the thrill of feeling like a mech pilot, Steel Battalion gives you the controls to feel it even better. We won’t lie though folks, nabbing Steel Battalion and the controller for it isn’t an easy—or cheap—venture but if you can this is one of the toughest yet most satisfying mech games we’ve ever played. If you can, definitely consider picking up Steel Battalion if you love Titanfall but want an even more immersive experience unlike any other.
