What You Need to Know:

  • It has been announced that from March 10, China will enforce further restrictions on online content, meaning that foreign firms will be unable to distribute online literature, maps, games, animation, music, and much more.
  • This isn't the first time China has made such a move - back in June 2015, they banned a long list of Japanese anime that were considered bad for public morality. This list included Attack on Titan, Black Butler, Tokyo Ghoul, and many, many others.
  • Various press are questioning just how exactly this will work, especially regarding the Apple App Store, which offers online games and other content from a Chinese server.
  • Others point out that China's laws are often so vague and broad that companies may be able to find a way around it. In any case, anime, games, and other otaku goods may soon become difficult to get hold of for those living in China.

Literature?! Maps?! I can kind of understand them banning certain anime series that go against their interests, but what's wrong with maps?

I just hope companies find a way around this, keep all the otaku living in China in your prayers!
