[Anime Culture Monday] Anime Recipes! – Ichiraku Ramen(Naruto) & Omurice(Charlotte)

Have you even seen an anime where the characters are starting to eat, and your mouth just starts to water? Bentos! Ramen! Bread! Udon! Cakes! Cookies! Melon Bread! Are any of these ringing a bell? Well they should because even as we watch the shows that we love, wouldn’t it be even more fun to try cooking and eating the food that you have seen in the shows?
Everyone can admit there has been some sort of dish seen at one time or another that you have wanted to try. So, I present to you, Eat like your faves, a new series from Honey’s Anime where we will take a look at some of the food seen in anime, and we will teach you how to cook it. That’s right! I said it, you will actually learn how to make real food from anime! Without further ado, let’s get started!

So when I started this article, I decided that the best, and probably most popular dish from anime all around is the ramen featured in Naruto! The characters are always scarfing down ramen at “Ramen Ichiraku,” a fictitious ramen restaurant in the Naruto Universe. Let’s take a look at the recipe itself now!

Ichiraku Ramen (Soy Sauce Flavor) from Naruto

RAMEN Ingredients (1 portion)

Ramen noodles
1 package

Thinly sliced pork tenderloin
As much as you would like!

Seaweed (Nori)
A few sheets

Chicken bouillon (soup stock)
About 2.5-3 cups

Green Onion (Scallion)
For garnish

Thinly cut deep fried tofu (Aburaage)
As many strips as you want.(Cut into thin strips lengthwise.)

Naruto (The pink spiraled white disks in the picture)
A few slices (Note: this is fish paste. Flavorless but delicious)

Hardboiled eggs
1 or 2

Soy Sauce
to season

These items will make you a bowl of ramen similar to the one seen in the show. However… there are more things you can add!

Optional Items (Ingredients):

For those seeking a more healthy ramen, or if you just love veggies, feel free to add in any of the following:

  • Bean Sprouts (Moyashi)
  • Cabbage
  • Bok Choy
  • Corn
  • Bamboo shoots
  • Sesame seeds

How to Cook It:

    Take your pork tenderloin and put it in a plastic ziploc bag along with whatever seasoning you would like.
    Massage the tenderloin from inside the bag and then let it sit for a few hours in the fridge.
    I recommend adding soy sauce in the marinade because this recipe is soy sauce flavor!

    Next, you need to cook the pork tenderloin.
    Preheat your oven to 350˚F/170˚C and cook for about 20 minutes or until fully cooked through.
    You can cook it at higher temperatures, but you don’t want the meat to dry out!

    Boil your eggs.
    Get a pot, bring some water to boil, and boil them for about 10-12 minutes.
    Once they have boiled, place them in some ice water to chill.

    Now it’s time for you to cook the broth.
    Bring the broth to a good simmer and add in the soy sauce.
    Add in a little at a time so it doesn’t become too salty!

    Next add in the noodles to the simmering broth.
    Skip the packets if you are using instant noodles.
    Cook the noodles according to the packaging.

    Once done boiling the noodles, pour them along with the broth into a deep bowl.

    Next, get all your toppings ready!
    Peel your eggs and cut them in half. Add in all your toppings, putting a few sheets of the seaweed on one side of the bowl and the sliced pork tenderloin on the other side.
    Top with the green onions.

    Dig in like they do in the show!

(Double Note:
If you are underage, or new to cooking, be sure to let your parent/guardian know what you are doing. We don’t want you to get hurt!)

You can use any ingredient you would like.

Note: if you decide to use mirin, be sure to include some soy sauce and some sugar to balance out the flavor.

There you have it! A fairly simple and straightforward way to make this ramen from Naruto! If you don’t have all the ingredients, you can always sub out veggies for some of the extras listed in the optional sections. My personal suggestion is to add bean sprouts. They are delicious!

Omurice or Omelet Rice from Charlotte

For choosing this recipe, what I did was I thought about what is a quintessential food that you see in many anime and after ramen, it was to be omurice. It’s been featured in Charlotte this season, so I figured why not?

How you usually see it in an anime is as a football shaped egg omelet with something written in ketchup on top. It’s in any episode in a show where characters go to a café or restaurant and it’s very popular in Japan! I will be presenting you with a meatless omurice with ketchup rice recipe. However that is only one popular variation. You can add chopped chicken to it as well as cut up sausage. Please make it to your liking!

OMURICE Ingredients (1 portion)

Cooked rice
2 cups

Your favorite frozen veggie
About ½ a cup
(Something that comes as a mix such as succotash or a baby veggie mix)

Consommé Bouillon (soup stock.)
1 cube (You can do chicken if you prefer

Butter
1 tbsp

Ketchup
3 tbsp

Eggs
3

Milk
3 tbsp

Salt and Pepper
A pinch for flavor

Optional Items (Ingredients):

  • Chopped chicken
  • Cut up sausages
  • White onions (sweet onions) - go well with the meat!
  • More veggies - (Just be careful not to add too much or the omelet will break!)

How to Cook It:

    If you decide to cook with meat, cook the meat now in advance in a saucepan or frying pan. Be sure to cook it all the way through!
  2. 2

    Next, take your frozen veggies out of the freezer and pour them into a bowl. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and then microwave them according the directions on the package. Be sure to stir them about halfway through the cooking time.

    Next, cook your rice!

    Once the rice is ready, combine the rice, soup stock, butter, meat (if you used it), veggies and ketchup all together in a bowl. Season it with salt and pepper. Mix it well and then cover it to keep it warm.

    pepper together too. Lightly oil a nonstick pan and pour in the egg omelet mixture to form a thin, flat omelet.
    Don’t pour it all in at once. Just enough to cover the entire bottom of the pan. Once that happens, then you can slowly add in the rest of the mixture to strengthen the omelet.

    Next, pour your rice mixture onto a plate. Try to push it all together and cover with the cooked egg omelet.

    Take some ketchup and try writing something! A few fun words that appear on omurice in anime are, “Love,” people’s names, “oniichan” and sometimes even “senpai.” I hope senpai notices me!
And there you have it! I have included some examples of omurice so you can see what it looks like!
