This!!! Honey-chan THIS!!! THIS is what a historical anime should look like! Real history was not filled with pretty boys or singing boys, but real fighters who killed.

Wow! That trailer was intense!! What are we looking at? This is fall 2016 and produced by Hoods Drifters Studio. Apparently they just changed the name for this one show and the OVA it had.

Come through Hayato Matso & Yasushi Ishii!!!! You know they did the music for Hellsing Ultimate while the former worked on Darker than Black and the latter on Kami Nomi zo Shiru Sekai!

Hellsing Ultimate!! That explains why it looks so similar - Ryouji Najamori is in charge of character design. This is definitely one of the standout series of fall 2016.

Synopsis

In the year 1600, the decisive Battle of Sekigahara took place.

In Satsuma Prefecture, Shimazu family military commander Toyohisa Shimazu had managed to escape death after risking his life in the battle to retreat, and was wondering around in the mountains.

In the middle of the pouring rain, he ends up in a corridor-like room with endless doors. There Toyohisa ends up being sent through a stone door to the other side, without even having the chance to question the mysterious man Murasaki.

This is a world ruled by the Kingdom Orte, another world where humans and demi-humans live. Along with war heroes Nobunaga Oda and Yoichi Nasu No who have drifted here from another time, with his unwavering samurai ideology Toyohisa rushes to this new world’s battlefield!

Three Episode Impression

Drifters is definitely the dark fantasy to keep your eye on this season. It doesn’t shy away from gore, and it gladly reveals the self-centered and greedy nature that accompanies warriors of great aptitude. That’s not to say that the characters don’t have noble qualities. Toyohisa is in this predicament because he sacrificed himself for the greater good of his clan. This, however, doesn’t take away from the fact that once a threat, or any unknown for that matter, is put before him, he will proceed to hack at it until it’s become ribbons. Pushing the story along is a well-balanced cast of historical figures, style similar to one of the darkest anime out there (Hellsing), and a rock intro that sets the mood for a bloody good time.
