[Anime Culture Monday] Anime Recipes! - Egg Salad Sandwiches (Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso) & Katsu Sandwiches (Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka?)

Hey everyone! Welcome back to “eat like your anime faves,” a series where I teach you just how to eat like characters do in anime. That’s right; you learn how to cook real Japanese food from anime. I’m back again to give you more of what you love! This week we are changing again to look at some Japanese lunchtime favorites that you can easily adapt into your own lunches! No problem!

The first is the ever classic egg salad sandwich. Japanese people LOVE this staple so it’s no surprise how often you see your favorite anime characters eating them as well! Creamy and smooth, these sandwiches are something you can easily make again and again! Not to mention too, it’s so simple, that you can pass them off for regular egg salad sandwiches and have your whole family eating them!

How to cook it:

  1. 1

    Boil your eggs.
  2. 2

While your eggs are boiling, finely slice the cucumber and the ham into small, bite size pieces.
  3. 3

As soon as the eggs are doing boiling, take them out of the water, and put them into a bowl of ice water.
  4. 4

Once you can touch the eggs and they are not too hot, peel them and slice them up. Immediately add the salt and pepper to your liking and mix.
  5. 5

Put the eggs in the fridge for about 10-20 minutes and then take it back out.
  6. 6

Add as much mayonnaise as you want and then mix in the ham and cucumbers too.
  7. 7

Let it set a little bit more in the fridge and then you’re good to go!
  8. 8

While it’s in the final chill, take your bread and slice off the crusts. For some reason, Japanese people and anime characters alike, do not like them.
  9. 9

    Dig in!

2. Katsu Sandwich from Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka?

Another popular stable, whether it’s in popular bento, anime or reality, everyone loves these! When the characters had their feast in episode 11 of the first season of Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka, you know that they couldn’t resist even at a fancy meal, to have these! The girls all dig in and loved it! If you have ever seen a scene from any other anime ever, it will always have katsu sandwiches.

Think about characters when they go into conbini. There will always be onigiri and sandwiches displayed. Katsu is usually one of them with egg salad being the other one. Delicious, served cold, and refreshing, these can be a great way to get a nice dose of protein during your day!
