Synopsis

This is Yumenosaki Academy, a private school overlooking the open sea. Specialising in training male idols, this academy has a history of sending out generation upon generation of talented young men to the entertainment industry.

One day, a female student transfers to Yumenosaki Academy - a student with a special responsibility.

Three Episode Impression

As the main character, Anzu does a great job of being a surrogate for the audience as she allows them to familiarize themselves with the world of Yumenosaki High School along with her. Like the real life world of idols, we see how competitive the industry can be, but taken to whole new extremes that only the creativity of anime can give us. For example, when students “battle” against one another, it’s not simply just a battle of the bands; it can literally be a fight. Being an anime about Japan’s distinguishing idol culture, expect a lot singing. With some of the performing scenes featured in episode 3 with Akatsuki, cel-shading is used to further dramatize the scene (as opposed to rotoscoping in Carole & Tuesday), but when it comes to the joints such as the shoulders, they come across as pointy and the frame rates are awkward. We’ve all heard the arguments against cel-shading (looking at you Berserk 2016), so if you’re someone who doesn’t like it, everything you don’t like about it are featured here... although thankfully, it’s not used in regular scenes.

Characters & Voice Actors List

Subaru Akehoshi

Voice Actor: Tetsuya Kakihara

A positive mood maker who always tries his best, is always moving around and can’t settle down. Loves money (not in a greedy way, he just likes shiny things and loves coins regardless of their value). In the same class as Hokuto, and is always with him and Makoto. Is also part of a unit with them and Mao, called ‘Trickstar’. The members get on well. Subaru also has a pet Shiba Inu called Daikichi.

Hokuto Hidaka

Voice Actor: Yoshimasa Hosoya

Cool and collected, a perfectionist that always tries his best. Hates being thrown off pace but although he may appear to be cold towards his classmates, he cares about them. He tries to kindly and carefully teach the new student, but also has a slightly air-headed side to him. A member of Trickstar.

Makoto Yuuki

Voice Actor: Shoutarou Morikubo

He acts like an energetic mood maker, but in fact he’s not very good with words. He’s also bad at speaking to girls alone. He’s trying his best to overcome this, and aiming to become an idol. A member of the Broadcasting Council, he is reliable when it comes to collecting information. A member of Trickstar.

Mao Isara

Voice Actor: Yuki Kaji

A dependable guy who will help out anyone - although he’ll complain while he does it. Although he’s the school council accountant, he’s also a member of Trickstar, which antagonised the council. Doesn’t want to get involved with annoying things, but somehow always ends up getting dragged into them.
