Cool! So this is a mobile game that has been turned into an anime. The story and PV certainly look good. Are we going to look at them being pursued or just at adventurers? Hmm so many questions! I am so excited!

If you have no other reason to watch this series, the legendary Nobuo Uematsu is doing music. You know, he did all of the Final Fantasy Games!

Whaaaaaaaaat! Does that mean then that he did the Final Fantasy XV: Kingsglave series as well??

Not sure. Hmm... Excluding Sword Art Online, we see job classes in Granblue Fantasy, so what are good RPG anime? It also appears that a special airs in January while the series starts a few months later in Spring 2017.

It really depends on what direction Granblue goes in, but good places to bide your time are Xenoglossia, Devil Survivor 2 The Animation, The Persona 3 Movies, Persona 4: The Animation, Disgaea and more!

Synopsis

On Zank Tinzel, an island that reveres mystery, lives a young boy named Gran together with his speaking winged dragon Bii. One day though they suddenly meet Lulia, a young girl.

Lulia is currently fleeing from the Eleste Empire, a powerful military nation that possesses a mighty military power and is currently trying to rule the world of the heavens.

Gran and Lulia decide to flee from the empire. They take with them a letter left behind by Gran’s father that says “Wait for me on the island of stars, Istalusia”, and depart into to magnificent sky.

Three Episode Impression

It really feels like a Final Fantasy game. Both character designs and world settings scream Final Fantasy. Part of this is in how detailed each character’s design is towards fitting with a job class, which is something that Final Fantasy prides itself on, especially in Final Fantasy Tactics. Nonetheless, all of this should be expected as GranBlue Fantasy: The Animation comes from a video game that both Nobuo Uematsu and Hideo Minaba worked on. If you are unfamiliar with their names, those two were respectively the music composer and art director for several of the earlier Final Fantasy games.

Overall, this anime feels like a role-playing game, which has both promising and negative points. A lot of RPGs do not get the ball rolling until a bit later in the game, when you have a full team and the characters are interacting in fun and unexpected ways. This show will definitely grow once more characters are introduced, but at the same time, it would be a lie to say that it has not started off strong. A decent amount of action is included in each episode, and the plot is moving forward quickly. There are two issues that might throw people off. The first is that the plot moves forward so quickly that certain developments are just accepted without much explanation or struggle. This hopefully does not continue throughout the season. The second is that the dialogue is too in line with the plot. So far, it feels like everything the characters say has to do more with pushing the plot than showing off character traits.

Characters & Voice Actors List

Gran

Voice Actor: Yuuki Ono

Gran is a boy who lives on the island Zank Tinzel with his winged dragon Bii. Gran aims to reach the island of the stars, Istalusia as noted in the letter that was left behind by his father who disappeared. Without failing to be tempered by everyday events, he is very kind and will lend a hand to those in need. Through his meeting with Lulia, he sets out from his hometown on an adventure.

Lulia

Voice Actor: Nao Touyama

Lulia is a young girl who has the power to control “seishoujuu” or the beasts of the world. Due to this unique power, she was imprisoned and studied by the Eleste Empire. While she is running away, she meets Gran who saves her and together, they set out on a journey.

Bii

Voice Actor: Rie Kugimiya

Bii has been with Gran ever since Gran was a small boy and is his partner. Bii absolutely adores apples. He cannot stand being treated as a lizard or small animal.

Catalina

Voice Actor: Miyuki Sawashiro

Catalina is a knight of the Eleste Empire. She was in charge of monitoring and guarding Lulia, however once she learned that the Empire was looking to acquire Lulia’s mighty power, she rose in revolt against the Empire. Catalina cares for Lulia as if she were her own younger sister.

Rakam

Voice Actor: Hiroaki Hirata

Rakam is a live wire of an airship pilot who became one so that he could cross the skies steering airships. Due to the shock of an accident in his past though, he refuses to let Aerial Knights board his ship. He appears as blunt and curt, but he actually looks after others well and is quite obliging.

Io

Voice Actor: Yukari Takamura

Io is a young girl who is currently in training to be a mage. While chasing after her teacher who has disappeared, she meets Gran. She comes off as being mature and adult-like, but if she is criticized she can suddenly regress to a temperament closer to her actual age.
