L Lawliet Preview (No Spoilers)

When Shinigami (Death God) Ryuk was bored of his realm, he purposely drops a Death Note to the human world hoping to spark something interesting and ease him from boredom. When Yagami Light, a straight A’s student and well-known genius found the note, he utilizes it to kill off criminals and those who are on death row in the hopes of creating a new world where he envisioned it to have no criminals whatsoever, earning him the nickname “Kira” (note the similarity to “killer”). Now, it’s up to “L” to stop “Kira” and his actions.

L Lawliet Bio

Orphaned at a young age, L Lawliet was raised in Wammy's House, a facility for intellectually gifted children established by Quillish Wammy or Watari. L grew up to be the world's greatest detective, operating under the mononym "L". L worked together with the Chief of National Police Agency, Soichiro Yagami and other members of the NPA and formed the Japanese Taskforce to tackle the case of "Kira".

L Lawliet Highlights

1. Eccentric Gestures

These are the most obvious features that made L's character so unique. Throughout the series, L is known for his unique way of expressing himself physically. The way he slouches over when he walks, the way he picks up things delicately often using only his thumb and index finger, and the weird way L sits have become one of the main reasons why this character is so loveable.

In episode 10 “Doubt”, we can see that L revealed to Yagami Light that he must sit in that weird posture, for if he sat in a normal position, his reasoning skills would drop by 40%. In the same episode we can also see the way L picks up his phone delicately by only using his thumb and index finger and slouches over when he walks around.

2. Intelligence

One of the most appealing features of L is his intelligence. Even though he's armed with little to no information at all regarding Kira's case, he was able to deduce and eliminate the possibilites of Kira being outside of Japan by faking a live worldwide broadcast that was actually only broadcasted in the Kanto region of Japan.

In episode 9 “Encounter”, we can see that both L and Yagami Light were chosen as the freshman representative due to their top scores in the previous entrance exams, both scored 100% in all subjects. It was also shown that L memorized everything on the entrance speech that was obligatory as a freshman representative and was in fact holding a blank piece of paper.

3. High Metabolism

Despite the obvious signs of sleep deprivation from L's excessesive eye bags and the fact that he's underweight due to his choice of diet (He mostly eats only sweet things), L is known to possess high athletic abilities, one of which involved him winning in the England Junior Cup Tennis Championship.

In episode 10 “Doubt”, we can see that L proposed to have a tennis match against Yagami Light as a way to get to know each other better. To the ordinary eye, this might seem to be a normal tennis match between the two, but it was a mind battle between L and Yagami Light in determining each other’s next move.

4. Sweeth Tooth

Throughout the series, it became apparent that L's favorite food involves sweet things. You would notice that L is constantly snacking on donuts and cakes or adding ridiculous amounts of sugar to his coffee or tea. L also revealed that he remains underweight even though he only eats sweet foods because the brain uses more calories than any other organ in the human body.

In Death Note 13: How to Read, it was revealed in World of L’s Wonder Guts section all the things that L ate throughout the series which consists of mainly sweet foods. In episode 16 “Decision”, we can also see that L purposely ignored the ham in his prosciutto e melone and only ate the melons. This unusual habit of L’s became one of the most unique aspects of the character as a whole in the Death Note series.

5. Mysterious

Throughout the series, L rarely expresses his emotions unless he intends to do so. He also keeps a majority of his thoughts to himself. The way this character was drawn had ‘mysterious’ written all over it. Starting from the blank gaze and the poker face that L was portrayed with in the anime, it really gives off an enigmatic feel towards the character itself. This was one of the reasons why fans are inexplicably drawn towards this character.

In episode 8 “Glare”, we can see that L proposed to have the Japanese Taskforce team to set up surveillance cameras in Yagami Light’s room based on his 5% suspicion of Light being Kira. It was revealed later that even though L gave a low percentage of suspecting Light as Kira, he was very certain that Light was Kira despite lacking the evidence to prove so.

Overall, the Death Note series is very enjoyable for people who likes certain aspects of mystery element in anime. The story development might be a bit slow at times but it was all worthwhile to have such a well-thought-out ending. With the success of the series, it also spawns much controversy in real life. One in particular was the incident of China banning the series, claiming that it contained plots dealing with murder.

Does L intrigue you in some way? What part of L’s personality or characteristics do you like most? Be sure to let me know in the comments below!
