What to expect
Spirit of Justice keeps the same features of games past including the Phoenix’s ability to unlock psyche-locks, Apollo’s ability to find a person’s tell, and Athena’s ability to read the emotions of a witness. Much of the game is similar to that of other games, so fans will know how the game works right from the get-go. However, there are a few features that are different that have added a level of difficulty to the gameplay, but we will discuss that in a minute.
Many new things were added into the Spirit of Justice and the story is quite different yet familiar to fans. However, let’s not spoil any of that as we are about to dive in in just a second!
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice Trailer
Much like each game, new prosecutors are introduced in Spirit of Justice as well as a whole new cast of witnesses, perpetrators, and victims. Of course, we have some favorites returning to the game like Phoenix, Athena, Apollo, Trucy, and of course, Maya! Does that take anyone back?
While the characters are nostalgic, the story itself is a bit different from the other ones. First off, Phoenix is visiting Khura’in to see Maya, but Khura’in is a country where religion is the ultimate power and lawyers are viewed as despicable. When a crime is committed, things are not handled in a way familiar to Phoenix. No, judgement is passed based on the Divination Seance, which the royal priestess performs bringing to light the last moments of the victim prior to his or her death. However, Phoenix keeps finding himself in court to defend his friends and fight a system that ultimately just hates him.
Unfortunately, it will not be an easy time because it seems there is treachery afoot. There seems to be something funny going on in the government of Khura’in which has caused quite a bit of trouble for the law. Rebels are attacking Khura’in and causing trouble for the country, but who is really at fault here? Well, it all depends on whose side you are on, but as Phoenix Wright, you have a lot to uncover before things can be righted again!
One other thing to note is the use of several main characters. In fact, you will play as Phoenix in some parts of the game and as Apollo in the others. Both of these characters must fight to figure out the truth and battle against all the forces that really seem out to get them. As you continue on, you may discover that both what Phoenix is going through and Apollo’s past come into play. There is so much more to the story than meets the eye. However, I would rather not spoil the mystery for you. You just will have to play and find out more.
In fact, you get to take a look into the pasts and cultures of multiple characters. Spirit of Justice has managed to add more depth to our favorite characters!
Visually and audibly, Spirit of Justice takes on the same qualities of games with its use of music and visual effects. While some things have changed when you play in Khura’in (like the banner that says Witness Testimony and Cross Examination), much is still the same. Graphics wise, the game is very similar although the characters perform smoother movements than the older games and are capable of performing more advanced movements. A great addition with the Divination Seance is the use of actual fluid movement in the characters to perform the dance. You get a short cutscene, which we have never gotten with such fluidity before!
Speaking of the Divination Seance, it introduces a new aspect into the gameplay. The Divination Seance is utilized by the royal priestess to show the last moments of the victim and goes through the five senses. The Divination Seance is usually used to prove the defendant is guilty without question, however, Phoenix has taken it upon himself to fix the system and save the victim from all the flaws involved in the Divination Seance. As Phoenix, the player must figure out what in the Divination Seance and the priestess’ testimony does not add up, including going through the five senses and which scene must be used. This adds a bit more difficulty into the game.
Also, as stated earlier, you get to play as both Apollo Justice and Phoenix Wright in the game, which makes the game much more innovative than before because you get to unlock psyche locks, figure out tells, and sort through conflicting emotions. Oh, let us not forget Ema Skye who allows you to put your forensic skills to work! It brings all the old gaming capabilities together in a single game bringing nostalgia to some fans and excitement for others. It really ups Ace Attorney’s gameplay to whole another level!
Well, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney ~Spirit of Justice~ is a pretty great game and addition to the series. It’ll give you many hours of gameplay! While you get to combine many of the old features you loved from the other games, there is the addition of new features that will be sure to keep you entertained and add some difficulty so that you will not be finishing too soon.
There are so many great games in the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney series so how does a game even add up? Well, you will have to play Spirit of Justice to see if it really suits the Ace Attorney series’ standards. Of course, do not let your inexperience with the series get to you; it is quite easy to jump right in and start playing from Spirit of Justice.
