Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records Introduction and Story (Spoilers)

Meet Glenn Radars, the low-life substitute teacher of Alzano Imperial Magic Academy. In hindsight, Glenn may be the least likable person to be a teacher thanks to its lax nature, his ignorance towards magic and others. There seem to be one thing that motivates him. Money.

But all negative traits set aside, Glenn Radars is a former Execution officer that worked for the Imperial Court Mage Corps. He used to be a very high-skilled mage that somehow comes to hate the magic the uses himself because of reasons that will be discussed further in this review.

What You Liked About Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records

It’s safe to argue that you can throw in Slice of Life and perhaps Romance Comedy into the mix of genres because of some of the scenes in this series. The series is incredibly enjoyable to watch, it's action-packed with comedic flair to it that sort of blends in really nicely to create this wonderful show. There are a few questionable fan services that appear in this series that doesn’t necessarily fit the plot. But what gives? It’s a service nonetheless.

The series overall does feel like Great Teacher Onizuka with magic in the equation. And the way the series project Glenn Radars keeps you filled with curiosity of wanting to know more about this past. As you can see in the series, Glenn never fails to surprise you with something different.

Discussion Time

Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records gives you an insight into what is apparently a beautiful bond between a teacher and his students. As well as the character in of it itself. There were, however, some fan service scenes that kind of strays away from the main plot that perhaps be considered to be removed? Or instead, does that add the flair into this enjoyable series?

Is the anime too short to complete the main storyline? Honestly, if you have watched this series, you would notice that there is a LOT more to tell and a LOT more that haven’t been revealed yet in the short span of 12 episodes. With the ending hinting another season, it could take a while for you to fully understand the full story plot of this entire series.

Why You Should Watch Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records

1. Great Character Development

Well, you have a half-assed substitute teacher that does nothing but asks you to self-study but is secretly very high-skilled in terms of magic. And to see that slowly flourish and reveal itself as the episode progresses is truly wonderful.

It’s very obvious that great character development is one of this series’ many strong points. It is reflected from how the students come to admire the seemingly ‘low-life’ of a teacher that is Glenn Radars, and how Glenn Radars himself come to terms with his past that still kind of haunts him. It’s a very interesting and exciting series for sure.

2. Interesting Characters

This is pretty obvious to be one of the strong points of this series. It’s really amazing to see how the writers are able to come up with characters with specific traits and then as the plot progresses, the characters sort of change your perspective of them. Things are not always what they seem for the characters, and the series does an incredible job of delivering that to the fans watching the anime.

Characters that exist in this series also have this ability to ‘pull’ anime fans, making viewers at home interested in getting to know more about this character. What they did in the past, their true identity and so on.

3. Making Fans Stay Curious and Interested

What I really liked about this series is the way the writer keeps certain things or important aspects of a character from the viewers. This inevitably makes fans curious and wanting for more, watching more and more episodes trying to find out what’s the story behind this character.

This goes the same with the plot. The writers have the plot set to ‘confuse’ you at a certain degree. Making you think that things weren’t as easy as it seems. And it pays off to have an unexpected storyline to the series.

Why You Should Skip Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records

1. Slow Storyline

I guess it’s sort of a give and take at this point. If you’re looking for a straightforward plot series then I won’t suggest this anime to you. Because of how the writers approach their characters and their pasts. Evidently, it causes the plot to move at a much slower pace.

It’s also made the series a bit vague in terms of the story line and honestly if it weren’t for how great the character development is, the series wouldn’t be as enjoyable as it is right now. Since 12 episodes aren’t enough to tell the whole story, it’s very likely you would see a season 2.

2. Filler Scenes?

As I mentioned before, there were a few fan service scenes that I deemed to be unnecessary. It didn’t feel right with the plot, and it made me question whether if it’s still relevant. The good thing is the scenes were not too overpowering in the sense that it actually disrupts the plot, so overall it’s still okay to have them.

Final Thoughts

To sum it up, Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records is a very enjoyable series that boast this incredible bond of a fellow teacher (or in this case a magic instructor) with his students. There were certain parts of the series that manages to capture the essence of being a fellow teacher because it’s very relatable. Like how Glenn Radars essentially breaks down magic lessons to its very basis of the core, and how he knows each and every one of his fellow students very well, what their personalities, strengths and also weaknesses are.

It’s definitely worth watching, and the more you watch, the more you will be interested in knowing more about the main characters of the series. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and wait for the 2nd season of Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records to come!
