Humanity has been overrun, wiped out by unusual ‘Beasts.’ That is, except for Willem, a young man who has awoken from a slumber lasting several hundred years. The only things capable of defeating the Beasts on behalf of humanity are holy swords known as Carillon, and the fairy soldiers that wield them. However, although Carillon can be reused after battle, the fairy soldiers who used all of their powers to wield them will die.

The death flags here are popping up so fast that if one hit you in the face you'd get concussion. Shuumatsu Nani Shitemasu ka? Isogashii desu ka? Sukutte Moratte Ii desu ka? might look like a load of cool fights, cute girls, and relaxing scenes with the sweet little kids, but we can already feel ourselves reaching for the tissues in preparation for the inevitable eye waterfalls. While the setting is supposed to feel reasonably safe for the characters, it's also oddly unsettling like a seat that you can't quite get comfortable in. As if something bad could happen at any moment. Regardless of the story though, the one thing that struck us so far about the series is the music selection, which feels special and provides a real fantasy vibe as we watch the characters moving through the world. Although there have been a couple of bits of fan service so far, Shuumatsu Nani Shitemasu ka? Isogashii desu ka? Sukutte Moratte Ii desu ka? feels like it's taking itself fairly seriously, so don't let the cute girls put you off as this world will certainly be a harsh one for them. The art and animation is nothing to really write home about, but we wouldn't say it's a problem, as the series' worth will likely be determined by which direction the plot takes. Shuumatsu Nani Shitemasu ka? Isogashii desu ka? Sukutte Moratte Ii desu ka? is a series that may well surprise you with its unusual tone, and a show we would recommend trying.
