Synopsis

The year is 2016.

Matoi Sumeragi is a second-year middle school student and part-time miko (shrine maiden) at Tenman Shrine in Kamaya city. Yuma Kusanagi, Matoi’s friend and coworker, is a girl born into Tenman shrine’s family of Shinto priests and next in line to become head miko.

One day, these two make their way to the shrine from school as usual, only to discover the grounds in ruins and Yuma’s parents collapsed, injured. Then they see a man who is clearly not in his right mind. Yuma instantly performs a divine possession ritual, but it’s not Yuma’s body which the deity enters…

With this, Matoi, who only ever wanted to live an ordinary life, suddenly gains the power to exorcise evil spirits! In order to get back her uninterrupted peaceful days, she decides to try her best in her exorcist activities.

Three Episode Impression

The fall anime season seems to be dominated by magical girl anime, and this is a noticeable one. Soushin Shoujo Matoi is an interesting take on magical girl because it focuses on a plot outside just the magical girl aspect. Something appears to be going on regarding the demons that Matoi has to help exorcise, but she also has a mystery involving her own parents. It actually has the feel of Kuromukuro in magical girl form, but it also seems to be attempting to enter the ecchi category with its not so subtle jabs at Matoi for walking around naked after transforming back. While at this point, Soushin Shoujo Matoi has an interesting premise, there seems to be more going on than meets the eye. So try to keep an eye out for that!

Characters & Voice Actors List

Matoi Sumeragi

Voice Actor: Ayaka Suwa

Fourteen years old, a second-year middle-school student and part-time shrine maiden. Due to her mother disappearing when Matoi was a child, she spent a long time under the care of her grandmother on her father’s side, but she now lives with her father Shingo. She’s very mature for her age and takes care of all the housework in her mother’s stead. She dreams of one day having a ‘normal’ life with both of her parents but, due to her being able to host a deity, she ends up putting all her energy into exorcising evil spirits.

Yuma Kusanagi

Voice Actor: Naomi Oozora

A first-year student in middle school, thirteen years old. The next miko of the famous Tenman shrine. She’s naïve and full of energy, the type of girl who acts on instinct as soon as she gets an idea. She admires the generations of exorcist miko that have inherited Tenman shrine before her, and has never stopped believing that she herself can become just like them. As a result of her taking out the sacred treasures just for fun, Matoi ends up being possessed by a god.

Clarus Tonitrus

Voice Actor: Haruka Tomatsu

A fifteen-year-old girl and member of Fatima, a special undercover organisation that works directly under the Vatican. Fatima specialises in exorcism, both legal and illegal, and Clarus is one of the Anti Creed, children who perform these exorcisms. She is deployed to Japan, where she meets Matoi and Yuma.

Shingo Sumeragi

Voice Actor: Hiroki Touchi

Matoi’s father, a detective at Kanagawa Police Department. After his wife Shiori’s disappearance, he decided he was unable to both work and maintain the household and so sent Matoi to live with his parents. He starts living with his daughter again in her second year of middle school, but having been estranged for so long, she now calls him, ‘Shingo-kun.’

Luciela Haruka

Voice Actor: Ayako Kawasumi

An agent at IATO, an international anti-crime organisation. She works together with Shingo, who is chasing after the truth behind the paranormal incidents caused by a group called Nights. Through her investigation, she ends up encountering both Nights and exorcist girls (Matoi) and decides to stay at the scene. She may look like a cool beauty, but she’s actually very good at looking after others.

Cariot

Voice Actor: Nobuyuki Hiyama

A priest for the Vatican secret service, Fatima. His job is to oversee the Anti Creed Clarus Tonitrus. He comes to Japan with Clarus to hunt down Nights.

Hideo Tezuka

Voice Actor: Atsushi Abe

Shingo’s subordinate at the detective section at Kanagawa Police Department. He’s loyal and serious when it comes to his work, but he’s not exactly all there. Shingo calls him ‘Pochi’, a traditional Japanese dog name, because he’s a ‘fragile dog.’
