[Supernatural Invasion Spring 2017] Like Gate: Jieitai Kanochi nite Kaku Tatakaeri? Watch This!

Gate: Jietai Kanochi nite, Kaku Takakaeri left an impression on just about anyone who has seen it. Sure, the second season was a bit of more and the same, but the series overall is a fantastic military adventure for all to watch. Blending, not only the aforementioned two genres, but fantasy, supernatural, and action genres together, Gate as a whole is a fantastic story of characters who try to overcome issues within their own world while being confronted with a new story. And the best part? Even though it is part of the isekai (another world) trope, it is not boring and does not feel as if it has been beaten to death. Looking for something similar to it? Check out the recommendations we have today for two more shows from the current season of Spring 2017 that are just like Gate in certain ways on this installment of Like This? Watch This!

About Gate: Jietai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri (GATE)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jul 2015 – Sept 2015

Gate: Jietai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri tells the story of a JSDF officer known as Youji Itami. Itami is an otaku at best and only works so that he can fuel his hobbies. On the way home from a doujinshi convention, he suddenly notices that something is wrong as he is seeing creatures that should not exist in our world. With some quick work, he is able to save many lives and the day. Three months later, it is revealed that a portal allowed these creatures and fighters into our world; it is located in Ginza. No one knows what is on it, but Itami is put in charge of a battalion of Humvees and tanks as they go through the portal to this new world known as the “special region”. Eventually, they meet beings on the other side and are sucked into a war that will have serious consequences.

Souta Mizushino is just another high school boy who enjoys working on a light novels he has created. One day, while looking at his tablet, he is drawn into another world in midst of a battle that he knows from another novel! Somehow surviving, he makes it back home to his dimension, but then he looks around and realizes that Celestia Yupitilia, from the fight, is also in his room. After a few mishaps, it appears that multiple characters across multiple works have all been brought to our world by the same person–Gunpuku no Himegimi–and no one knows why. There is an issue though, she knows about our reality and what these characters need to do. They need to meet with their own creators as they are the Gods of this series. While Souta, Celestia, and their new companion, Meteora, try to piece together the puzzle, they also have to deal with these other characters descending into our world. One by one, these characters meet their creator but they all have the same question, who created Gunpuku no Himegimi?

Three Major Similarities Between Gate: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri and Re:CREATORS

1. Both Are Isekai (Another World) Stories

Which is true. Now, Re:CREATORS is actually a dissection of the isekai trope, but nonetheless, some character has to come to a new world for this to be invoked. In Gate, it is Itami who has to go from our world to another while in Re:CREATORS, it is the other way around as the characters all come here to our world. There is also, as one would expect, massive confusion when either Itami arrives or when Celestia and Meteora arrive. Both are super confused as to why they are here and what is going on. It’s a simple setup but the outcome is basically the same. Not to mention too, both first episodes basically open up with fight scenes and keep the action going throughout.

2. Both Have Serious Conflicts That Need The Main Character’s Help

With Itami, he basically rolls up into the other world and almost immediately is thrown into battle. After it is resolved and he thinks he is okay, he learns quickly how he is wrong and there is conflict plaguing the land. They need his help, his wit, and his tactics in order to survive. The same is true for Souta. Even though he has no powers, no special talents, or anything like that, he is the one who is dealing with characters from fictitious settings that need his help. And of course, true to the Isekai setting, he is the only one who can help them. No spoilers in that this is revealed in the first episode. This is probably so because he quickly accepts things and is able to help them all.

3. Bounty of Characters to Like

There are some who are rather turned off by the fact that Gate is one giant billboard for the Japanese Self Defense Force. That being said though, the one benefit is that even if you do not like Itami, there is going to be someone that you like aka Lelei, Tuka, Piña, or Rory *coughallhailthegoddessRorycough*. The same is true with Re:CREATORS as well. Not feeling the core three main characters? Well Yuuya, Mamika, Rui, Blitz, Alicetelia, and Magane are more than happy to fill that void. In both Gate and Re:CREATORS too, the characters are very much diverse so it is not as if you are getting different personalities in the same school uniforms.

Coming from another plane of existence, Yaha-kui has come to help humanity out inside the object that came crashing down on the plane, a giant cube named KADO. Everything it touches, it can swallow into it. Yaha-kui wants to analyze humans and at the same time help humans evolve. So, Koujirou has to now negotiate with his former boss, the Japanese government, for the sake of not only himself, but also those on the plane, Japan, humanity, and most importantly, Yaha-kui zaShunina

Three Major Similarities Gate: Jietai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri and Seikaisuru KADO (KADO: The Right Answer)

1. Supernatural Another World Invasions

Just like with GATE, and probably a bit stronger here than with Re:CREATORS, KADO essentially opens up with the invasion. Right from the start, after a few minutes of introduction, you immediately hit the ground running. Itami is already doing damage control with the first invasion in the first five minutes as is Koujirou. Both respective series also have their supernatural/fantasy elements that we will get to below. But you still have one world being invaded by another.

2. Almost the Same Genres & Setups

Gate is Action, Adventure, Fantasy, and Military. KADO focuses on Sci-fi, which can be argued for Gate, Seinen, also arguable for Gate, Supernatural, and Fantasy. The problem with Seinen is that it is so broad of a term, and really both of these series would be geared towards men. Anyway, the series themselves both deal with the supernatural coming into the lives of humans and the effects that they have on our societies. Someone is an alien in either story; it just happens to be Itami in Gate and Yaha-kui zaShunina in KADO. Itami basically brings order and revolution to the other world, so does Yaha-kui with his inventions like with Wam and negating the need to sleep.

3. Both Itami and Koujirou are Negotiators

This may not seem like a solid point at first, but hear us out. Itami has to negotiate at first for peace from the side of the Japanese government, but then later subsequently has to negotiate for the various races that are in conflict on the other side of the portal. His job never really ends though. Koujirou is the best negotiator in all of Japan. In fact, that is essentially what Itami becomes throughout Gate too. Koujirou though is confident, serious, and is ready to tackle just about anything. Hence why he is so calm throughout the series even though the delicate thread of peace is supported by him. What is not to like about a main character that can negotiate well?

Final Thoughts

We hope that we have not only explained ourselves well, but also have made it clear why those who like Gate: Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri should enjoy currently airing Re:CREATORS and Seikaisuru KADO. Of course, there are more reasons as well, but these are the ones that stood out to us the best as the most memorable and arguable when you are comparing these two series. But what you do think? Could someone who dislikes Gate enjoy these two anime? Be sure to let us know in the comments below what you think about these arguments.
