It’s Not All Laughs

Nagareboshi

This week Jigoku Shoujo showcased a laughable manzai comedy duo. While funny and ballooning in popularity, the two comedians themselves do not have a good relationship. The one playing the boke or funny man Haru, is actually the creative genius behind the whole duo while the tsukkomi or straight man Nanako, is the one who cannot come up with anything on her own. The episode actually opens with Haru getting a doll from Jigoku Shoujo herself. This though leads to some issues and she struggles to face why she is with Nanako. It can be hard when the pressure is riding on her and she has no idea where to turn. There is so much conflict between these two and Haru feels like sending Nanako to hell would free her of the social burden. However, this is not the answer and we see the mysterious Michiru appear to tell Ai that she is pushing the ladies too much.

Eventually Haru reconciles her feelings and tells Nanako that they should do something that they used to do originally. They do and both have a great time before an audience. However, afterwards Haru walks into the break room and says that she feels refreshed. Which has her lead into that she wants to break up with Nanako and do her own thing. Nanako gets angry and throws down a bouquet she was holding to reveal that she has a straw doll as well. As the string is pulled, they say, “see you soon” and Haru is whisked off to hell. However again, Michiru’s voice is heard again in the background saying “this is wrong! This is not what they wanted!” with the episode closing.

This series is getting more and more complicated as we go along. True, about 90% of Jigoku Shoujo’s cases could be solved if the two individuals would communicate how they feel and how things need to be resolved rather than leaving it to a third party to dispose of someone. Michiru is starting to seem like she is the voice of reason in this series compared with Ai Enma and her crew how seem to be representing depravity. What would be nice to see is Michiru explained as I feel like the explanation is going to be coming very late in the series. Either way, while the art may be slipping, I am in LOVE with this series and the stories that it is telling. Here is to more!

I still don’t get it. Can someone explain it to me? Please?

Bad Boy Bad Boy (?)

Ellyn Barnes

I didn’t really know what to make of the first episode of Gamers!. I mean, the protagonist Amano is irritating but also entertaining and while the main girl Karen is cute, the other characters didn’t really stand out to me apart from the angry guy Tasuku (my type is so easily spotted). Which is why things took a sudden change for me this week, when the focus switched to said angry preppy guy.

We learn that Tasuku’s done a so-called “high school debut”, completely changing himself in order to fit in better and become the popular guy he is now. His former self was none other than a fully-blown otaku, with thick-rimmed glasses and a dorky hairstyle. However, we also learn in this episode that he is kind. Despite saying the kind of crap teenagers say about each other, he actually reaches out to Amano and hangs out with him.

However, the best (and cutest) moment of episode two is when Tasuku finds out that his girlfriend Aguri isn’t just with him because how he looks now, as he assumed. Nope, she in fact has adored him since his geeky middle-school years, a fact that touches not only Tasuku but us as viewers.

Ahhh this was so cute! I hope we get more super-cute scenes in Gamers!

I Just Can’t Decide

Jenangelx3

Title of this week’s moment is “I just can’t decide”; why? Because I can’t decide on a moment! Aho Girl has been ridiculously funny and I couldn’t decide on whether I wanted to pick the moment when Sayaka has given up all hope on explaining to Yoshiko or if I wanted to pick the moment Yoshiko forces Akuru to motorboat her. It’s all so great so I shall pick both!

First off, when Sayaka couldn’t figure out how to explain to Yoshiko the situation, she gives up and decides to run all the way to the farm. Hell, Sayaka even begs for train fare because she couldn’t handle it all anymore. Yoshiko really makes Sayaka do things that put her pride last and she doesn’t even know it. I think it’s hilarious that Yoshiko even runs with the dolls in her hands like they’re just playing.

Then, what makes it so much better is that Yoshiko had seen her mother attempting to sexually tempt her father and didn’t know it. Yoshiko even uses the same method to try to make Akuru happy, although we all know how that’s going to turn out. Poor Akuru was handcuffed and couldn’t get away and he gets off as a pervert. It’s so perfect and I love it all.

It’s all so perfect!

This Is How You Do Battle Royale Scenes!

Rod Locksley

Last episode of Dragon Ball Super was number 100, so I went in with high hopes. To be honest, this was not the best episode ever, but Toriyama and friends managed to give us a handful of what we truly want. So far we had a lot of nonsense fights, with warriors going 1 on 1 with all the time of the world and no sense of it being a battle royale… but this? This was kinda cool!

We had some saiyan action with Vegeta, Goku, Cabba, Caulifla and Kale, but also we had Hit’s interaction with the team, and even Roshi could deliver some words of wisdom. Yeah, you may think this was another filler episode, but it wasn’t, and if it was, this was the best filler episode in months. Other thing to note is that DBS episode 100 gave us a lot of fights, with Kale’s transformation as the central point. We all knew 80 are a lot of fighters, so maybe Kale’s rage was a plot device to kill a lot of them? I hope so! Still, this episode is not about what we see, but about what we may see in the future: true teamwork between Hit and the others, a close relation between 6th and 7th universes and, of course, Jiren’s huge power. Goku is struggling against the legendary saiyan and then this guy appears and put her down?! There is sooo much going on here. Like, at least this time we can see distant explosions when characters talk… do you remember how empty it all was a few episodes back? I want to see unexpected teamwork and betrayal… I want to feel like this is a real battle royale where punches and energy balls come from any direction. I guess this episode is a good sign.

Finally! Why did they make us wait so long?

The Struggle Is Real

Lizzy Nyanko

In the second episode of Hajimete no Gal, Junichi makes his entire clique of pervs jelly by stating that he is now officially Yame’s boyfriend. For some reason, he also chooses to continue listening to these losers’ advice about how to get into bed with Yame. Like they’d know…
Following said advice, Junichi is ready to invite Yame to karaoke as his friends said it’s a way to “get a room” and gals are always dtf. (idiots).
Of course, Junichi doesn’t have the… resolve to do it, but he gets lucky -again- and Yame takes him to karaoke. She also “sings suggestive songs”, suggests singing a duet, and takes off her sweater, which are the 3 things needed to fulfill the “XXX Karaoke rule”, which states that after these 3 things happen, you’re guaranteed some nookie.
This is when we see inside Junichi’s head and his inner dialogue between his Debbie-downer side, with a dark aura and always insecure and pessimistic; his naive nice-guy side, in awe at what’s happening; and the funniest one, his libido, a version of Junichi dressed in a zentai with panties on his face and constantly thrusting his hips and saying “Now they have to do it! Hey, go! Hey, go! Hey, go!”. This is the brain of a teenager on hormones if you’ve ever seen one!

And then the cherry on top of this already hilarious moment. Like an angel out of a ball of light comes Junichi’s cool self, with a deep, suave voice, a handsome face and flowing red hair. Cool Junichi tells the other three that’s why they’re still virgins and talks some sense into them. His ikemen stance and the trio’s reactions add to the already ridiculous situation. Libido, now further encouraged by Cool Junichi, is determined as he says: “I guess I’ll have to draw the eternal saber of courtship and take her myself” while humping the air. But Cool Junichi knows that’s not the right way and tells them she probably wants a kiss first, as she is a lady. And with a wink and a sparkle of his ikemen smile, he convinces the rest of the Junichis. Then they celebrate, Cool Junichi strikes poses and says differents words for ‘kiss’ while the other three chant “ikemen, ikemen” and dance around him.

This hilarious depiction of a horny teenager’s brain when faced with a sexy situation was the best moment of the week for me, mostly because it’s not only funny, but also seems like the accurate portrayal of a hormonal teen’s thought process!
