Three Isekai Anime Worth Checking Out for Summer 2017

Introduction

We all know the isekai trope. It is something that is being heavily used by many an anime and many more an author. The main character, usually a loser by society's standards, is sucked into or sent to a new, magical, shiny world, where they magically obtain teammates. Then by some superhuman power, they are able to conquer any and all social phobias that they have had up to this moment simply because they are in a new world! Glossing over that massive plot hole, isekai anime can be really good. Since we here at Honey’s Anime are all about recommendations and showcasing anime, we figured the best way to do this would be to showcase some summer isekai anime that we have our eyes on. Let’s go!

1. Re:CREATORS

Before we get started, beware, SPOILERS WILL BE IN THIS PART.

Technically listing this again is a slight cop-out. The thing about Re:Creators though is that it is so well done, that you are really doing yourself a disservice to yourself and the anime community if you have not started this anime yet. What Madoka Magica is to the Magical Girl trope, Re:Creators is to the isekai trope. Re:Creators is slowly, but surely, breaking down the concept of isekai anime as we know it, and it is fantastic. First, and probably the most important, characters are DYING. This is unheard of in the isekai trope because they always magically pull through or someone has healing magic and everyone is okay. Thankfully, while we did have a close moment with Selesia, death as a plot device is being utilized and it is being done well. Still though, we will miss you Mamika.

The other big point to love about this series is that it is completely an inverted isekai trope setup. All of the otherworld characters are coming to our world and wreaking havoc with their lack of logic as to how our world works. It’s super interesting. If you have read this far and not seen the show yet and need some help, the story follows Souta who accidentally ends up in Selesia’s novel before being brought back to our world. But there is one problem, Selesia has left her novel and made it into reality. They then meet the antagonist Gunpuku no Himegimi again. After that, they meet Meteora and before they realize what is going on, multiple characters from multiple works of fiction have all been dumped into our reality. They search for their creators or “gods”, if you will, while trying to figure out why they are all here. We broke down how the characters all are based on other prominent anime & manga characters, so be sure to check that one out as well!

2. Isekai Shokudou

Once every seven days, a door, or rather, multiple doors open. Who will step through them though is unknown. What is known, is that this restaurant that serves western food is set in another world. This isekai restaurant will not refuse a customer should they get through that special door. They can sit down, eat, drink, and be merry. Not all of the beings that arrive through, are human. In fact, there are many who are not human! Heck! Even the waitress is not human.

This anime is going to be cute, this anime is going to be interesting, and above all else, this anime is probably going to be a good watch. It gives off a Ristorante Paradiso feel and with Masato Jinbo direction, you know this is going to be well-done. He did Chaos;Child, Hidan no Aria, Hakuouki, Jigoku Shoujo Futakomori, Simoun, Shakugan no Shana, and more. You know that this is going to be well done. Plus he is doing the script as well! Check out what is probably going to be an excellent seinen, isekai anime this summer.

3. Knight’s & Magic

True to it’s title, Knights & Magic is about the story of a giant, mecha otaku and programmer who is transported to another world, reborn, and named Ernesti Echecarria. There, he learns about a world full of magic and mecha called “Silhouette Knights.” There, in this new world, he is going to use his knowledge to build the mecha of his dreams. However, it seems that of course, not everything is going to be easy for him as there are shadows moving in the background. His ambitions though, are sure to make a big impact.

Knights & Magic was another series picked from the Japanese light novel site Shousetsu-ka ni Narou (Log Horizon, Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei, Konosuba, Re:Zero) to be made into an anime. I am not saying that this is going to be a success, but seeing how many hit series picked from the site that there are, it is a safe bet to say this should be emulating that same formula for success. The series looks okay from the views and compared to what else there is that is coming this season, Knight's & Magic at least has the unique angle of mecha. Who knows, we may even get a new Gurren Lagann or something.
