10. Tomoya Okazaki from Clannad

  • Episodes: 23
  • Aired: October 2007 – March 2008

Clannad documents a very misunderstood boy named Tomoya Okazaki and his relationships with various people in high school, particularly with Nagisa Furukawa, the friendship with who grows romantically over time. Tomoya first notices Nagisa when she alone shouts random things, catching Tomoya’s attention. Following that incident, Tomoya becomes more aware of Nagisa’s presence around school, finding out that she is actually a grade older but was held back because she was often too ill to leave home. Now that Nagisa is becoming more active and present at school, she dreams of reviving the drama club. As such, Tomoya reluctantly helps along with four other friends. While he interacts with his companions, Tomoya realizes the intricate details of their lives, providing them guidance as needed and deepening their relationships.

Though Tomoya is perceived as a delinquent, he is quite the opposite. Prior to meeting his friends and progressing through high school, Tomoya strongly resented the town he lived in. He harbored much negativity towards it, particularly because he lost his mother at a young age and over time, grew distant from his father. However, Tomoya slowly grows to accept his town, as he builds close bonds with his friends, and of course Nagisa. Tomoya has a tough exterior, but deep inside, he only wants the best for those he cares for, truly expressing his kind-hearted essence.

9. Shouta Kazehaya from Kimi ni Todoke (Kimi ni Todoke: From Me To You)

  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: October 2009 – March 2010

In the anime Kimi ni Todoke, Sawako’s appearance is often mistaken as the scary girl from “The Ring,” thus giving her the nickname, Sadako. The gossip surrounding Sawako deters people from getting to know who she really is. In this response, the people who really know her can say that she is opposite from this fictitious film character: Sawako is very timid, kind and sweet. As Sawako yearns for friends and a sense of fitting in, she is drawn to Shouta Kazehaya, the most popular boy at school. Incidentally, when Kazehaya starts talking to her, Sawako’s spirit is overjoyed. Over the course of time, Sawako and Kazehaya venture on to new experiences, both individually and together.

Kazehaya’s personality is quite the opposite of Sawako. His popularity and recognition differs greatly from Sawako, in that everyone is attracted to his outgoing and friendly personality. Although many girls like him, what drew him to Sawako is the fact that she did not give him this intense, all-consuming infatuation like many others do. This shy, timid, and reserved quality that Sawako possesses makes Kazehaya more interested in her. Furthermore, for the longest time, he is unaware of the mutual interest she has for him, until this is revealed in later episodes.
