Welcome to the very latest installment of Honey’s Monthly Anime Astrology! This time around we are going to be talking about the charismatic and somewhat mysterious characters born under the air sign Aquarius. This sociable star sign is likely to be the life of the party - generally well liked, if they so choose they can easily establish a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. Under this charismatic surface they are quite sensitive, and extremely complex.
Aquarius might be typically be social, but they are first and foremost independent creatures. This independence may be a source of strength for them, but it can also be an achilles heel when it isolates them. Mental stimulation and communication are crucial to the happiness of this sign. These clever creatures can be hard to pin down, but they wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s certainly interesting to see how these tendencies manifest themselves in some of our favorite anime characters - so let’s take a look at this month’s list!
10. Taiga Kamia (Eyeshield 21)
- Birthday: February 14th
Taiga Kamia is the ace running back, and captain of his team, the Misaki Wolves, where he acts as captain. Football is where he excels - he uses his formidable speed to lead his team to victory. He is extremely confident in his athletic abilities, and rightfully so.
Aquarius may sometimes display a certain level of magnetic arrogance, the way that Taiga does. Indeed, when driven, this independent star sign typically needs very little help from others to succeed. However, they will tend to do their best when they can occasionally swallow their pride to accept it - a valuable lesson for members of this sign.
9. Shizuku (Omamori Himari)
- Birthday: January 31st
Shizuku is a water dragon goddess with a dark, tragic past. Her entire family was killed off by demon hunters, and as a result she spends a great deal of energy holding a deep-seated grudge against all the demon hunters she meets. Eventually she is able to overcome this wound but not without assistance.
This star sign can be extremely emotionally driven - their intuition can be their greatest ally. However, when there are strong emotions involved, this sign can lose sight of logic. Shizuku is able to overcome this Aquarius tendency - when she witnesses the kindness of a future demon hunter, she is able to forgive him and go as far as to befriend him.
8. Haruka Tenou (Sailor Moon)
- Birthday: January 27th
Haruka Tenou is a student that moonlights as magical girl Sailor Uranus. Haruka is generally socially reserved, preferring to keep a handful of people close including her girlfriend Michuru Kaiou. When she’s not going to classes or saving the world, she can be founding racing cars. This is more than a hobby for her - she is ranked as one of the top drivers in the country.
Haruka is fiercely independent, and hates to be told what to do. Independence is perhaps the value that Aquarians hold highest. Trying to restrain an Aquarius is a sure-fire way to cause friction in your relationship with them. Haruka is outwardly very confident, however in typical Aquarius fashion there is much more to her than meets the eye.
7. Nobuo Terashima (NANA)
- Birthday: January 23rd
Nobu Terashima is best known for his role as guitarist in the up and coming punk band Blast. He is an incredibly talented musician who takes his craft very seriously. He is generally very easygoing and playful, and gets along well with most people. He has a crush on the protagonist of the series, Nana, which proves to be a source of drama for him.
Nobu is a perfect example of the infectious charm that Aquarians posses. Nobu has a genuinely good heart, and wants to see those he cares about happy. This Aquarius tendency is generally positive, and part of what makes this sign so socially adept. However Nobu’s desire to please others can put him positions where he buries his feelings, and fails to make his own happiness a priority.
6. Ren Tsuruga (Skip Beat!)
- Birthday: February 10th
Ren Tsuruga is a famous idol with droves of adoring fans. In the public eye he is well-mannered and friendly. His professional image is very carefully cultivated - so much so that he is almost an entirely different person in private interactions. Behind closed doors he is extremely arrogant, bordering on rude.
This is another example of an Aquarius character that showcases their tendency to be people pleasers, to an extreme. Ren’s image matters to him not only as a means to advance his career, but it is a personal point of pride to him as well. This drive to impress others and maintain his reputation is a source of conflict for him. Aquarians are happiest when they can strike a balance between their friendships, and staying true to themselves.
5. Kou Mukami (Daibolik Lovers)
- Birthday: January 28th
Kou Mukami is a vampire who also has a job as an idol. He is another character that has two faces - a public one, and a private one. The Kou his fans know is sweet, charming, and even kind. In reality he is the complete opposite. Not only is he cruel, but also manipulative - he knows he is very handsome, and also knows exactly how to use his appearance to his advantage.
Aquarians love attention and are often drawn into the spotlight - Kou isn’t the only star on this list, after all. Because of their innate ability to win people over, fame is something that comes easily to them. However because they are such intellectual and emotionally complex creatures, they may grow weary of it, or find it shallow, depending on what their life outside of the limelight looks like.
4. Rin Tohsaka (Fate/stay night)
- Birthday: February 3rd
Rin deliberately isolates herself from her classmates. To outsiders, she appears to be an aloof girl who generally keeps to herself and prefers to stay out of trouble. However, she has a secret - Rin practices magic. Not only that, but she is a successor to a long line of spellcasters with a tremendous amount of pressure on her to uphold her family’s tradition.
Though Rin’s introverted appearance might make her seem an atypical Aquarian, a closer look reveals the opposite. It is the social pressure of her family that drives her to keep to herself, and put magic before potential school friends. Those born under the sign Aquarius are associated with psychic abilities and heightened supernatural intuition - so it comes as no surprise to see a character like Rin so involved in magic.
3. Haruhi Fujioka (Ouran Kokou Host Club)
- Birthday: February 4th
Starting at a new school is hard enough, and Haruhi Fujioka’s start is rougher than most. She winds up breaking an expensive vase that indebts her to the host club at Ouran High School. One thing leads another, and it is decided for her that she will assume a second identity as a male host in order to repay them. Haruhi is a generally serious and introverted girl, but she doesn’t have much other choice.
While many Aquarians actively seek to build friendships and expand their social circles, this isn’t always the case. Haruhi manages to gather a group of people that care deeply about her through very little effort on her part. Instead, they are magnetically drawn to her. She is also an example of another Aquarius character who puts the happiness of her social circle before herself - keeping her problems a secret, rather than burden others.
2. Kiki (Kiki’s Delivery Service)
- Birthday: February 2nd
Young Kiki has aspirations of becoming a witch. At the young age of 13, she sets out to leave her family and follow her dreams. She is a gregarious child, and not at all shy. However, she can be a bit much for others to handle, which is something she finds out once leaving home. Becoming a witch may not be the easiest thing to achieve, but Kiki is determined to make it happen.
Kiki is another example of an Aquarius who might not have the easiest time making friends on her own, but is eventually able to win people over based on who she is as a person. She also possess the Aquarian affinity for the supernatural, as well as a strong ambition to pursue her dreams - both classical traits of this sign.
1. Mikasa Ackerman (Shingeki No Kyojin)
- Birthday: February 10th
Mikasa is the main female character in the series. She is the sister of the protagonist, Eren Yeager - the two have been close ever since she was adopted into his family at a young age. Though she joins the military to be with him, she finds a niche for herself there, quickly rising to the top of her class. She is generally serious, and is rarely seen smiling.
Mikasa receives a great deal attention for her prowess in combat, however she is humble. Recognition is far less important to her than her friends. Those born under the Aquarius star sign generally has many varied social connections, but only a handful that they deeply value. However, once an Aquarius designates someone to be a close friend, their loyalty is unmatched. Mikasa fights fiercely for her friends, no matter what the stakes are.
The often gregarious and intellectual Aquarius is an interesting sign, to be sure. Those born under this star sign are not easily defined, and neither are these characters. While no two mentioned on this list are the same, most of them value their social lives very highly, and are extremely independent.
