10. Sarutobi Ayame “Sa-chan” from Gintama – Masochism, Gintoki-philia

  • Episodes: 201
  • Aired: April 2006 – March 2010

Earth has been invaded by an alien race known as The Amanto and they have taken over feudal Japan, establishing a prohibition on swords which leaves the Samurai of Japan treated with disregard. Despite the prohibition, Sakata Gintoki is a man who still understands the way of the warrior. Working as a Yorozuya, he is accompanied by the jack-of-all-trades Shimura Shinpachi, umbrella-wielding Kagura, and their oversized pet dog Sadaharu and they have numerous adventures while on the various odd jobs that Gintoki’s profession entails.

Sarutobi Ayame is a ninja-in-training who falls in love with Gintoki. Her love is, however, obsessive and crazy at times as she enjoys being verbally abused by the subject of her affection, Sakata Gintoki. Sa-chan is often the source of extremely hilarious and outrageous situations built around her obsession with Gintoki. She enjoys it when he bullies her; Sa-chan said on one occasion when Gintoki took her red spectacles and played with them. In addition to her masochism and stalker tendencies, Sa-chan is also a pervert, these features pulling together to create an insanely funny character with an especially insane quirk.

9. Andou Reiji, “Andre” from Prison School – Masochism

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2015 – September 2015

The elite Hachimitsu Private Academy in Tokyo is a prestigious all-girls boarding school that has seen a change in policies that now accepts male students into the school. Kiyoshi, Gakuto, Shingo, Andre, and Jo are the only boys at Hachimitsu, where the girl to boy ratio is a whopping 200 to 1. Unable to communicate with their female schoolmates, the five boys decide to embark on the riskiest project yet: peeping into the girls’ bath! Unfortunately for them, their elaborate plan was thwarted by the Underground Student Council and they were sentenced to a month in the school’s prison, subject to harsh treatment and arduous days filled with trials that will test the strength of the bonds formed by their perverted brotherhood.

Andre is a giant of a character and his somewhat disproportionate face are features that are seldom forgotten, but otherwise, Andre is a fairly quiet character. Which is why it is mind blowing to note that he thrives on punishment, neglect and other forms of ill-treatment. His masochism goes into fairly disturbing territory as he is shown as a thin, shrivelled up shadow of his former self after long periods of no mistreatment. Andre dies inside when you forget to make him lick your boots or issue him a barrage of insults. Masochism keeps him alive. Keep Andre alive today by telling him how little he means to you, he’ll appreciate it!

However, Sora opted not for the destruction of the werebeasts, as there is no way he could bring himself to lay waste to a land he calls his “kemonomimiko paradise”, going on a tirade about his love for the “pretty animal-eared girls”. Takanashi adores anything small and cute that goes from stuffed animals to his senior, Taneshima. He feels calmer and happier after admiring something adorable and to a large degree, his enjoyment of his working life at Wagnaria can be attributed to the fact that Takanashi gets to dote on his cute senpai every day. Kyoukai no Kanata’s male protagonist, Kanbara Akihito, is a teenage half-youmu. Apart from being an immortal evil spirit hybrid, he is a fairly normal guy. I’m South African, harbouring an obsession for anything remotely related to Japan, mostly anime, of course. I draw sometimes. Some people call me Naledi, it’s my real name, or something like that. People think I’m stoic because I don’t smile often (I do sometimes). I like languages. Hoshi-kun and Naledi are the same side of the same coin.
