We’ve all felt it. The moments when you see a male character that exceeds all expectations and you think for a moment, I wish he was my older brother. It could be because of his protectiveness, cool exterior amidst chaos, general badassery, or maybe just his extreme moe-moe levels. Whether you’re a boy wanting a cool older brother or a girl wanting a protective nii-san, there’s the perfect older brother for you in this collective list!
10. Ranma Saotome from Ranma ½
- Episodes: 161
- Aired: April 1989-September 1992
Ranma Saotome is just your average martial artist---that is until he falls into a cursed well that ends up turning him into a girl every time he gets wet! Hot water changes him back, but not until after hilarity ensues. His arranged fiancee, Akane, is probably the original tsundere character who shares an equal disdain for the forced relationship but over time they both slowly warm up to the idea.
At first glance Ranma seems like your typical hot headed guy but within a few episodes you already get to see his soft, kind side. He’s especially hot headed with Akane but pretty chill with her sisters. He will definitely beat up anybody that messes with you. The only downside is, well, he might be more well endowed than you.
9. Himura Kenshin from Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan
- Episodes: 224
- Aired: April 2000-Sep 2004
The self proclaimed wandering samurai is more of an upfront, honestly friendly guy. A samurai with a bloody past, if push comes to shove, he definitely would protect you but would but rather solve things through diplomatic means.
Occasionally you might have the skeletons in his closet take you hostage but do not fear, he will just as quickly save you and derail the perpetrator. Really though, his happy-go-luck charm is what sets him apart. He truly is happy with a simplistic life and is an amazing cook!
8. Sora from No Game No Life
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: April 2014- June 2014
So maybe you’re not into a brother who can literally beat people up and would like someone who’ll play a good game with you! Sora is a NEET that gets summoned into an alternate universe where everything is decided by games--something he’s really good at.
Really though, his mastery at games is paired with his sister Shiro and whether you want to be her or have the duo of them, it’s a really wonderful pair. Known as Blank, they are the best gamers on the internet. Sora has a high IQ and observational skills but his weakness is being away from his little sister. Again, if you were Shiro, he would never leave your side.
7. Yusuke Urameshi from Yu Yu Hakusho
- Episodes: 112
- Aired: October 1992-January 1995
Known as a troublemaker to many, Yusuke randomly saved a little girl from an oncoming car and died in the process. His bravery and selflessness shocked many but his mother and childhood friend Keiko knew he was a good person. He comes back to life as a spirit detective, saves many lives and turns many enemies into close comrades.
You see Yusuke’s heart right away and eventually, especially after his heart is personified, you see what an adorably soft inside he has. Not to say he isn’t super cool, especially when he’s firing his spirit gun and slicing through evil doers, but knowing his harsh exterior has marshmallow insides makes you love him all the more!
6. Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist
- Episodes: 51
- Aired: October 2003-October 2004
Being an older brother himself, it’s easy to see why Edward Elric is on this list. After trying to bring back their mother using alchemy, Edward lost his arm while his younger brother, Al, lost his whole body. Not wanting to lose his soul too, Edward thought quick and gave up his leg to bond Al’s soul to a suit of armor and thus their journey begins to get their bodies back.
Time and time again you see Edward doing absolutely anything for his brother. Their relationship is deeper than most romances you see on TV and they would literally die for each other. On top of extreme loyalty, Edward’s smart with a sense of humor. Oh, and I guess he can transmute you pretty much anything you want. That’s pretty cool.
5. Itachi Uchiha from Naruto
- Episodes: 220
- Aired: October 2002-February 2007
If you are one of the lucky few who have made it through the whole Naruto series, you know how great a brother Itachi is. If you didn’t, you probably are a little confused as Itachi started off being introduced as the murderer of the entire Uchiha clan.
Without going into a 2 hours worth of flashbacks and spoilers, basically Itachi made a deal that his brother’s life would be spared at the cost of his own reputation. Despite setting himself up to look evil, he’s actually very kind and a total badass. He also set himself up as an obstacle for Sasuke to overcome and become more powerful.
4. Sesshoumaru from Inuyasha
- Episodes: 167
- Aired: October 2000-September 2004
Sesshoumaru seems to really hate his half brother Inuyasha, to the point of constantly fighting and trying to kill him, but you do see him eventually start to have moments of warmth towards his brother. Always masking it as not wanting anyone else to kill Inuyasha but himself, he comes to his brothers aid. This started happening around the time a little human girl named Rin came into his life.
Now, whether you are on the side of shipping Sesshoumaru/Older Rin or just Sesshoumaru being a father figure, you can all at least agree right now he’s a great older brother. Not only would he “beat up” (read: kill) anything that even dares touch you, he would be able to hear it from miles away. Also, he does seem to be able to acquire anything he needs so he’s got to have at least some money stowed away somewhere, right?
3. Rin Okumura from Ao no Exorcist
- Episodes: 25
- Aired: April 2011- October 2011
Rin Okumura was a pretty normal guy, albeit troublemaker, when one day he found out he was the son of Satan himself and that his brother knew all along. Complete with cool powers and a rockstar personality, what’s not to love? His amazing cooking definitely adds to the cake.
Despite being the Satan’s son, he’s got an honest heart and watches out for his friends. Even though he argued and competed against his brother a lot, he still cared for him, as his twin. Also, he has a fuzzy tail.
2. Goku from Dragonball Z
- Episodes: 291
- Aired: April 1989- January 1996
Now I speak for a large mass of people when I say Goku really was everyone’s older brother growing up. Dragonball Z was and still is such a powerful influence on young and old, boys and girls alike. A cool alien from outer space, Goku’s super Saiyan abilities are pretty much out the roof and has saved the Earth many times.
As for his personality, I don’t know if I’d call him happy-go-lucky or a bit of a ditz, but his cheery attitude will always keep you in high spirits! He’s honestly the best guy around but don’t challenge him to an eating contest; you’ll lose.
1. L. Lawliet from Death Note
- Episodes: 37
- Aired: October 2006- June 2007
Someone who’s never watched Death Note might be curious as to why such a short, older series still remains a big hit today but that’s only because they haven’t watched it and seen L. All over the internet you’ll see L on the top of the top favorite characters of all time list. Why? The reasons are endless.
He’s brilliant and his mind is incomprehensible but that doesn’t deter a soul from loving the death out of him (see what I did there?). He’s a sweet tooth like most of us are and despite being a crazy big detective, he still enjoys things like playing a good game of tennis or making his first real friend, Light Yagami.
His antics are a bit OCD and wacky and that’s precisely why we love him. Maybe it’s his antics or maybe it’s his extremely believable personality but somehow, you just find yourself immersed into this person that is L.
What do you look for in an older brother? Is it his ability to beat up your bullies or maybe his ability to teach you to beat up your bullies? Moe-moe factor? Either way, I hope you found your perfect older brother in this comprehensive list! Do tell us YOUR perfect older brother in the comments below!
