This is an update to the original Top 10 Anime Girls You Want as Your Valentine article. Be sure to check out the original when you are done!
You are about to leave school and grab your shoes from your shoe locker when a small envelope with a heart-shaped sticker sealing it closed falls to the floor. You open the letter and it simply reads, “Dear Senpai, please meet me on the roof after school.” A nervous feeling fills your gut as you open the access door to the school roof. The light is blinding for a brief moment as your eyes adjust to see the silhouette of a beautiful girl standing with her back to the setting sun. The scent of chocolate drifts on the breeze. “S-s-senpai, these are for you.. pl..pl..please go out with me,” she says, holding a carefully wrapped batch of chocolates. You realize its Valentine’s Day and it’s your lucky day.
The 2D girls inhabiting our anime world are not always sweet and kind; many of them would rather kick our butts than date us. Yet, Valentine’s Day seems to be the day that even the most sadistic of tsundere girls feels her heart flutter and challenges herself with time in the kitchen creating chocolates for her crush (only to pass them off as obligatory chocolate). We now count down the Top 10 Anime Girls You Want as Your Valentine!
10. Illyasviel von Einzbern from Fate/kaleid liner Prisma*Illya
- Episodes: 10
- Aired: Jul. 2013- Sep. 2013
A great school life, friends, a loving family, what more could a young girl ask for in an idyllic life? Monsters, yes, monsters and a talking wand. Illya is a magical girl. She was a normal girl until the wand Ruby decided that her previous master was being a pain in the ass and decided to jump ship and give her power to the pure-hearted girl. Illya is then led into a world of magical fights that could affect the fate of the world. We think that’s an awful lot of pressure for an elementary schooler.
Illya deserves a Valentine’s Day date. She’d be nervous and adorable. You’d go to her house and after talking with her brother (your friend, Shirou, the date is his idea after all) you’d wait in the doorway for your date. Illya comes down the staircase in her best jumper, an attempt to look older, but she still looks like an adorable little girl. She offers you some chocolates she made with Shirou’s help. You smile and then escort the little lady and lead the way. You head straight to the Lion Land amusement park. You spoil the Illya as you walk through the park. The times she tugs on your sleeve and looks up at you with her amber eyes and asks “Can we go there?” you heart melts. The end of the day leaves her exhausted and you carrying her on your back. She wraps her little arms around you and you wonder how such small arms can carry the weight of the world. You also think in a few years you’d like to try the date again because if her mother is any indication she’s going to be a knock out.
9. Kouko Kaga from Golden Time
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: Oct. 2013- Mar. 2014
Kouko had her life planed out at an early age. She was going to marry Mitsou and live happily ever after. Mitsou, on the other hand, wasn’t that into the idea. In response, Kouko became an excellent stalker and even transferred to the same law school to be near him. She was attached to his hip most of their lives and considered him hers, reacting in very hostile manner to any girl who might show interest. She even acknowledges the fact that she’s obsessive, controlling and smothering and doesn’t know how to change. Kouko is simply a hot mess.
Kouko is a girl’s girl. She loves frills, fine dining, and romance. A valentine’s date with miss Kouko is relatively standard, but a tough task. You have to impress; roses are a must. You’d have to start with picking her up in a car, a nice car, and take her to a show. She’d love to see Romeo and Juliet if it was playing. You’d take her to dinner at a French restaurant after the play and order champagne. The evening would end with you walking her to her apartment door and standing there awkwardly waiting for the go-ahead for a good night kiss. Kouko believes in the power of St. Valentine, so a kiss could lead to a lot more. (Disclaimer: dating Kouko could result in marriage because she not one to let go, ever!)
8. Hikari Takanashi from Interviews with Monster Girls (Demi-chan wa Kataritai)
- Episodes ?
- Aired: Jan. 2017- ?
Hikari is just your average teenage girl. She goes to school, has friends, a good relationship with her family and even her teachers. She is also a vampire. Hikari is one of several “Monster Girls” or Demi, attending a public high school in modern Japan. The world had come to the conclusion that vampires, dullahan, succubi, and snow women are just different, and accept them like any LGBTQ and in this case D. The series revolves around interviews a teacher at their school is conducting with them to learn about them and their cultures.
Hikari may seem a little young, or at least immature, to ask out on a date -- but it could be fun. She is highly energetic and has issues with personal boundaries. She doesn’t like the heat and direct sunlight bothers her, limiting the locations for a date. She wouldn’t do well in a museum either, she’s just got too much energy. You’d probably win her over by taking her ice skating. The two of you could hit the ice for a really fun Valentine’s Day date. You would also have every excuse to hold hands and bump into each other as you skate around the rink. She may get hungry while you’re out, so be sure to pack some blood because telling her to bite your neck is moving a little fast for a first date.
7. Mitsuha Miyamizu from Your Name. (Kimi no Na wa.)
- Episodes: 1
- Aired: Aug. 2016
Mitsuha, is a girl who grew up in the countryside of Japan and yearns to bask in the big city lights of Tokyo. She spends her quiet days at school, with her friends, working in the family-run shrine, and creating braided cords with her grandmother to sell. She does have one quirk; she seems to have inherited the ability to body swap. When she goes to sleep at night she wakes up in the body of a boy named Taki Tachibana who lives in Tokyo and leads a busy life going to school, working, and dreaming of being an architect. Mitsuha and Taki switch bodies each night, living every other day in their counterpart’s skin.
Despite wanting to leave the country for the city, Mitsuha does love her town and the people in it. A valentine’s date with her would be a hike and a picnic. You’d both leave the lakeside village and begin your hike up into the mountains. You’d carry everything; you’re a gentleman after all. The two of you would hike to the ridge of the crater and look out at the valley below. The clouds would part and you’d see the light sparkling off water below. You’d put down your bag and open up the blanket. She’d unpack a bento that makes your mouth water. You’d take a drink from the thermos then offer her some. You aren’t concerned about an indirect kiss, besides, a kiss might make her feel better after just being snubbed for an Oscar.
6. Urara Shiraishi from Yamada-kun and the seven witches (Yamada-kun to Nananin no Majo)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Apr. 2015- Jun. 2015
Urara is a quiet girl. She doesn’t stand out despite her incredible beauty. She focuses all her attention on studying. Urara is a witch, though. She’s not a witch in the cackling-around-a-boiling-caldron way, though. She has the ability to swap bodies with anyone she kisses. Urara isn’t even overly interested in using her power; she only discovered it after kissing Yamada by accident. This is anime so we’ll get past the accident part. She is one of seven witches at her school. The anime revolves Yamada, Urara and their friends unraveling the secret of the witches.
A Valentine’s Day with Urara would most likely be spent in a library. She is always studying and pushing herself to learn and understand more and be at the top of her class. You both could bring your books for a study session in one of the study rooms. A bag of snacks or orange slices and a drink or two smuggled in your book bag should stave off a vending machine run. You know she is smarter than you, so you can use that to your advantage. You can sit on the same side of the table, letting her help you with your math problems. The date may seem quite tame and boring, but those moments when you stretch your arm and rest it on the back of her chair bringing your bodies close and a blush to Urara’s fair skin lets you know an idiot like you might have chance.
5. Chiyo Sakura from Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun (Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Jul. 2014- Sep. 2014
Chiyo is your average high school girl: bright, cheerful, a talented artist and she has a crush. Her crush is the stoic Nozaki. She finally gets up the nerve to confess and tells him she’s his biggest fan. Nozaki then signs her an autograph. Chiyo didn’t realize that Nozaki is a serialized manga artist in “Girls Monthly.” She is quickly recruited by Nozaki to help with his manuscripts. Chiyo is often confused and constantly fails in conveying her feelings to Nozaki, but is happy that she gets to spend time with him even if it is working.
A Valentine’s date with Chiyo, if you happened to steal her away from Nozaki, would be a trip to an art museum. You could walk the quiet halls and stand near each other as you stared at the artwork hanging on the walls. You could try to impress her with a little art knowledge you managed to glean from Wikipedia. She’d smile and be happy even if you were wrong because you took an interest in something she was interested in. You could stop at the café and each have a coffee, ordering her extra whip just so you could see it stick to the tip of her nose. She would be adorable just sitting there, with her big red and white polka-dot bows on either side of her head, talking excitedly about art.
4. Lilith Asami from Trinity Seven
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Oct. 2014- Dec. 2014
Lilith Asami is a teenaged teacher at the top-secret magic school Royal Biblia Academy. The Academy is one of only a few places that survives in the ruined world. The academy’s role is to train mages to stop what is known as the break down phenomena, a magical plague that dissolves organic matter and had spread over the world. She is also the mage that brought the protagonist Arata to the magic school in hopes of taming his magic skills so he wouldn’t become a demon lord.
Lilith is an amazing mage. She is one of the seven most powerful mages at the school having mastered her thema. A thema is the area of study an advanced mage focuses their abilities on and for the best results you’d need to study the opposite of your personality. Lilith is a rather prudish girl who easily gets embarrassed by innuendo, so her thema is Luxuria (Lust).
A Valentine’s Day with Lilith could be absolutely amazing and filled with twists and turns as she goes from delicate flower to dirty devil. She would sure be one to give you chocolates and be all embarrassed about it. We know that Lilith can be bossy, but she is a prodigy after all. She is very innocent in so many ways and is an easy target for teasing, not that her mini skirt isn’t a tease in itself. You could be kind and distract her from her embarrassment by asking her to teach you something… in your room. We could only hope that teaching you about Luxuria would make her one naughty sensei.
3. Kosaki Onodera from Nisekoi: False Love
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Apr. 2015- Jun. 2015
Onodera has a crush on Raku. Raku and Chitoge are pretending to date to prevent a crime war between their criminal families. Chitoge and Onodera are best friends. Onodera wouldn’t dare get between her friend and her own crush. Onodera is innocent, timid and extremely kind, and lacks confidence. She is the kind of girl who -- if she loves you -- loves you completely.
A wonderful valentine’s date would begin with her offering you chocolates she made herself. You’d walk into town and go to a family restaurant for a nice quiet meal. She’d nervously look at you from the other side of the table as she unconsciously tucks her hair back behind her ear. You will talk about movies and school and your friends. The topic will never stray into love. She’ll be nervous and distracted as you walk home, not noticing the crosswalk. You’ll grab her hand and pull her back before traffic crosses down the street. She’ll be embarrassed and quickly say thank you, then get even more embarrassed as she realizes you’re still holding her hand. You’ll try to let go and she’ll squeeze tighter, letting you know she doesn’t want to let go, now or ever.
2. Kumiko Oumae from Sound! Euphonium
- Aired: Apr. 2015- Jul. 2015
Kumiko plays the euphonium in the Kitauji High School brass band. She is neither an athlete, the smartest girl in school, nor a musical prodigy. Kumiko is us: very ordinary. The events of Sound! Euphonium, tend to go on around her. She witnesses the drama we witness and becomes in some cases the listener or the go-between for characters caught up in the more dramatic parts of the plot. The plots in this story are many, they range from confessions, to academics, to dealing with the pressure to succeed and forgiveness of grudges for past slights. The overall plot arc deals with the band practicing to place in the national brass band competition.
We want to make Kumiko our valentine simply because she is us. She is the one looking in on the story and telling us the major events. Kumiko works hard, too. She is always practicing her instrument and trying to get better without letting her grades slip too much. She deserves to have a Valentine’s Day date. You know she would have wanted to make chocolates, but probably wouldn’t have the time or the skill, and that’s okay. She will simply look at you with her amber eyes and smile and your heart will melt. You’ll go for a walk and compliment her on her dress, something she’s a little uncomfortable wearing, so she’ll bring up a book she read. You’ll tell her it sounds interesting and you might want to read it when she’s done. Kumiko will suggest that you both sit down by the river and watch the people go by and as she watches the people all you can think of is what it must be like to burry your head in the soft curls of her brown hair. You both sit in silence and observe the other couples and maybe you creep your hand near hers and try to hold it.
1. Rem Re:Zero from Starting Life in Another World (Re:Zero Kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu)
- Episodes: 25
- Aired: Apr. 2016- Sep. 2016
Rem is one of the twin maids working for the great warlock Roswall Mathers. She and Ram, her sister, are both half Oni (ogre). She is petite and has bobbed sky-blue hair that drapes over her right eye. She is a quiet and polite girl but has enormous power and strength. Yet, when she lets her oni powers loose, she seems to have an overbearing bloodlust in direct contrast to her demure look.
Despite being a powerful warrior and competent maid in a massive manor, Rem is a simple girl at heart. She wants to be loved like any other girl. Rem would be happy going for a walk in the town market holding your hand; in her opinion it’s her way of showing how lucky she is. You’d stop at a flower stall and by a daisy to put in her hair. You’d get a bag of apples then walk out of town and stop near a big tree by a stream to rest out of the sun. She’d pat her lap letting you know that you can lay your head down. She smiles down at you and you smile back knowing that you don’t need anything more than time together for Valentine’s Day.
We watch these girls from afar, much like the wimp protagonist in a school anime, never interacting with these beauties as the laws of reality prohibit it. We can only sit back and admire these 2D girls and hope that if they are filled with enough personality and character they might be able to cross into our 3D reality. We burden these girls with our ideals and expectations for relationships we hope to have, so it has been only fitting we give each one of them a date to remember, even if only in our imaginations.
With Valentine's approaching near the corner, let's not forget about our waifus in our anime world. The laws of reality do not apply in the anime world, and as such, we sometimes find ourselves with more than 1 waifus.
So we will do you a favour of counting the 10 female characters in anime that you wish could be your Valentines! In no particular order, let's get the list started! We even have in our list - the kinds of date you can initiate with a girl!
1. Rin Toosaka from Fate/Stay Night
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: Jan 2006 - Jun 2006
Rin is an adept mage and perhaps even one of the best in the current Holy Grail War. She's a well known tsundere who has problems expressing her feelings. This is even shown more in the Unlimited Blade Works route.
Being matured and refined (or how she tries hard to act that way), Rin has her soft sides and adorable sides as well. And it is exactly because of that reason; we all want to poke fun at her! Don't you just want to dish out corny pickup lines, not for the sake of impressing her, but just to mess with her and watch her fumble with her words before getting totally embarrassed??
Being well-versed in magecraft and refined in general, Rin has a high affinity to the academics. An ideal date would see us taking a trip to a cultural museum and ending off in a posh cafe. There's nothing better than sipping premium coffee while discussing the current world affairs of Fuyuki city. Send her home after the date and end it off with a romantic kiss on the forehead and relish in her embarrassment. Make a game out of it! If she expects more, see how far you can go by teasing her!
2. Sinon from Sword Art Online II
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: Jul 2014 - Dec 2015
Sinon has a dark past which reflects the difference in personality in real life and in-game. She is a skilled sniper, and while her introduction shows her to be extremely aloof, she opens up to the people she calls her friends in the end. Calm and cool are the two words that best describe her.
Despite showing herself being outwardly strong, Sinon is actually very fragile and suffers a nervous breakdown whenever she sees a gun. This fragility makes her all the more Moe, and makes you just want to comfort her and stand by her simply to let her know that she has someone other than herself to rely on!
The best kind of date for a gamer girl is without a doubt, within the game itself! In a world of virtual reality, enjoy your date in the scenic Alfhelm Online, where the view is picturesque and your imagination can go wild. Fly around and enjoy the wind in your face or sit amidst the lush greenery and hear the troubles of Sinon and comfort her in the process. Since you're in the game as well, go ahead and try squeezing that tail!
3. Mashiro Shiina from Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: Oct 2012 - Mar 2013
The savant artist, Mashiro is an extremely gifted artist with many quirks. She has to be spoon-fed through her life, even with something as simple as wearing clothes. Mashiro can be said to be equally as terrible in everything else as to how impressive her artistic skills are.
Give us one reason for denying a request from Mashiro to dress her up, and we'll give you THAT reason for why you should pick her to be your Valentine's. And even if all else goes wrong, Pantsu is the answer =v=b
Since Mashiro is an aspiring manga artist, just bring her to a manga store. You can discuss all about the latest manga chapters. Simply watching her be mesmerized by the voluminous mangas and then daydreaming could perhaps be the best thing you will ever see. Don't bother planning in advance, it's very likely that she can't appreciate anything else.
4. Kosaki Onodera from Nisekoi
- Episodes: 20
- Aired: Jan 2014 - May 2014
The soft spoken and delicate Onodera is one of top waifus for that season alongside with her rival, Kirisaki Chitoge. Onodera is your typical clumsy airhead. Her efforts to make senpai notice her always ends up unnoticed to the point she embarrasses herself.
Onodera is perhaps the most traditional and feminine appearing character. She's gentle, sweet and caring who will willingly go all the way for her significant other. There's nothing more delightful than returning home after a hard day of work just to see her with her innocent smile. Truly a blissful scene!
Picture this: the vacation home with a beach. Onodera cuddling up close beside you in front of a warm fireplace with hot cocoa. If there is a lack of activities to participate in, simply hit the beaches. Splash in the waters and help her apply her sunblock. This makes it seem like the perfect vacation date. With Onodera, just keep it simple!
5. Rias Gremory from Highschool DxD
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Jan 2012 - Mar 2012
Rias is actually a Devil from a family with a pure-blooded lineage. Despite being the heir to the Gremory clan, Rias is actually very kind and gentle. While other Masters may mistreat their Servants, Rias is actually very caring towards her servants. She can also be very seductive as well, a well fitting trait for a Devil. We were actually wondering if she is indeed a Devil or a succubus.
Rias has got to be without a doubt, one of the hottest redheads in anime. Beautiful and well-endowed, she is the complete package. One of the many quirks of Rias is her tendency to sleep in the nude. So if you pick her to be your Valentine, you're almost guaranteed to have a very lucky 'Alentines'. Don't worry about the V, it will come along shortly.
A trip to the public swimming pool is your best bet! Not only will you get to see the gorgeous Rias in a swimsuit, you might even possibly be the centre of attention and the envy of the guys at the swimming pool! But really, the spotlight is still Rias. We leave little to your imagination on the wonders you can do at the swimming pool with Rias.
6. Haruka Morishima from Amagami SS
- Episodes: 25
- Aired: Jul 2010 - Dec 2010
Haruka is someone whom you might call fickle-minded. Interested in many different things and then getting bored soon afterwards, Haruka sort of jumps around different hobbies and clubs without a particular favourite. She is also extremely fond of animals especially puppies but she does have her eccentricities.
The first arc of Amagami SS is what got many people hooked to Amagami SS. Haruka is a strong opener to the arc-based anime and she has a very large fan base. Being charming along with a dynamic personality is a deal-breaker. You will never feel bored having Haruka bring you around town as she moves to many different things at a very fast pace!
Simply bring Haruka to a dog cafe. Since she is a fan of puppies, you will have a hard time deciding which one is cuter - the puppies or Haruka. You might even want to present her with animal-shaped chocolates since she is so terribly fond of animals!
7. Hiyori Iki from Noragami
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Jan 2014 - Mar 2014
Being a tomboy has its perks as well. Hiyori is a strong fan of martial arts to the point of repeating quotes from her idol. This fixation on martial arts has also imbued in her, a strong sense of loyalty and the morality. Despite her brash nature, Hiyori has a softer side to her and is not afraid to hide her emotions.
The feminine side of Hiyori is equally balanced with her brash attitude so you definitely can enjoy the best of both worlds. If you have a sports fan, the conversation would be endless with her. Think of a best bro friend but in female form!
Catch a high intensity and thrilling martial arts movie with her. Her passion for martial arts knows no bounds so you can expect many discussions on the whole movie. Being overly enthusiastic is another trait of hers, and she might even use you as a practice dummy. Since the code of conduct of being a male is chivalry, you will just have to receive them. What moves will she use? We'd leave that to your imagination...
8. Kurisu Makise from Steins;Gate
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: Apr 2011 - Sep 2011
Sharp tongue with an ever sharper retort, Kurisu (or more affectionately called Kurisuutinaa), is often called a tsundere by her friends (much to her annoyance). Being born a genius girl, she graduated from university at a young age of seventeen, and is often seen acting more mature and sensible than the people around her age.
Kurisuutinaa is most definitely a tsundere. There are only so many things you can do before she starts displaying her dere dere side to you. An avid forum board user as well, she understands the Internet lingo and emoticons which makes texting all the more enjoyable. Like all Tsunderes, you can't help but play the role of indifference just to see her struggle before finally patting her on the head.
Netflix and chill. There's no better scenario than that. If not, hit the forums board and start trolling other forum users since she is an avid fan of the internet forums.
9. Kotori Minami from Love Live! School Idol Project
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: Jan 2013 - Mar 2013
Kotori is the klutz and airhead of the idol group. Very sweet and very kind, she has a very unique high-pitched voice that makes you go kyaaaa~. Despite being very indecisive and cluttered at times, Kotori is extremely talented in the field of fashion, being the sole designer of the idol groups' stunning costumes.
The moeness level of Kotori so darn high that we might just have to invent a whole new level just for her. Always ranked as the top few in Love Live polls, many fans have even set up shrines dedicated to the idols alone. If you start bringing someone like her around, you will be the centre of attention. Being simplistic in nature, you don't need to plan ahead for dates as well as the both of you can simply relish in the simple pleasures that life can offer.
Since costumes are her things, just have a cosplay date with Kotori! She likes costume, you like anime, there's a very high chance it will end up as a very enjoyable time. Do a couple cosplay photo shoot at a photo studio or with a friend and take romantic shots together. Who knows, you can even do a risque photo shoot if that's your thing!
10. Hitagi Senjougahara from Bakemonogatari
- Episodes: 15
- Aired: Jul 2009 - Jun 2010
This one is a no-brainer. Hitagi is a tsundere. She even claims the title for herself! Snarky and sarcastic, her sharp tongue will often dampen your mood. Talking to her can be a chore as you will have to choose your words carefully. Extremely blunt as well, it takes effort and time to build a relationship with her but the payoff is worth it - she is always sincere.
Your date will mostly be snide remarks and her constant lashing at you. While it may be a turnoff, some would actually find it appealing to them. Disregarding your choices in being a seme or an uke, if you look past all of that, Hitagi is actually very considerate towards you and her sincerity and passion will instantly make you swoon. Sometimes, the extra effort will pay itself off in the dozens!
The most iconic scene in Bakemonogatari is also the most spectacular idea for any date. Despite showing herself to be cynical and snarky, Hitagi's soft spot is star-gazing. You will wish that time will completely stop. Place a mat in a secluded forest with a clearing and gaze up upon dazzling stars as you embrace each other and share a passionate kiss. No worries, just bliss. This scene is the epitome of platonic romance.
And with that, we conclude our list for the characters in anime that you would want to bring out on a Valentine with. Did we left out someone important? As the season is approaching, do share your love and passion - YOUR very own choice of a date for Valentines if you are able to pick one!
Until next time, have a happy Valentine's Day!
