Since we were little, we heard stories about the famous and most likely overrated Prince Charming. In the fairy tales we heard about, Prince Charming is usually a young and beautiful man who rescues a princess, sleeping-beauty, or poor girl from her cruel destiny. He usually rides on a white horse and, magically, appears whenever the situation requires. He is sweet, romantic and would do anything for the girl he loves. As we grew up, we realized that Prince Charming cannot actually exist in the real life, or better, we learned that Prince Charming exists in whomever we decide he should inhabit, but he doesn't ride on a white horse, or magically appear when you feel lonely or in danger and, probably, he is not as romantic and perfect. We all feel disappointed in discovering this about life. No point in denying it! However, we still like dreaming about this magical figure, and in the anime world there are a lot of princes, or prince-like boys who are still able to make us fall in love with them and daydream. This is the purpose of this list: to mention ten of the best princes that make our hearts go “doki-doki (thump thump)!”
10. Makoto Tachibana from Free!
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: July 2013 - September 2013
Makoto Tachibana is not an actual prince, but he sure has some prince-like manners that make our hearts warm up. He is depicted as a tall, beautiful boy with light brown hair and green eyes. He is the “older brother” kind of character, always prone to give advice to his friends and never losing his temper. His noble nature is shown very well in the way he acts towards Haruka, his childhood friend, who is troublesome and hard to understand. As far as he isn't an actual prince, he has a demeanor in the middle between a prince and a guardian angel; he is mature, calm and always smiling, and in the efforts he takes to help others, he forgets to take care of his own troubles. All the time, he tries to fix the damage that Haruka's gloomy attitude causes, to the extent that sometimes he has to speak or apologize in place of him. Although he can get very shy at times, and is easily scared, his most amazing trait is his patience. In fact, he deals very well with everyone, and always manages to touch people's hearts. He basically acts as a mediator, avoiding fights and managing to solve everything with one or two nice statement. In other words, he is a perfect Prince Charming, and that's why he gained our 10th position!
9. Soma Asman Kadar from Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji)
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: October 2008 - March 2009
Soma Asman Kadar is a prince, and the 26th son of the King of Bengal. When he was very young he was given a palace with servants and a woman – Meena – to take care of him. Some circumstances, though, caused Meena to disappear, and that's why Soma left for England with Agni, his butler. Soma is a beautiful prince with a dark complexion and wonderful honey-coloured eyes. He is spoiled, but has to deal with Ciel Phantomhive, who is way more spoiled than him. For as spoiled as Soma may be, we cannot deny he has some good points that made him worthy of the 9th position in this ranking. He is cheerful, energetic and always doing something funny. He is very caring, loving, and generous, and demonstrates it when Ciel found himself caught in a difficult situation and was struck with a serious illness. He stayed by his side all night long, and provided him with all the necessary attention. What's more, he forced Ciel in bed when he wanted to just go back to his duties, and kept him company until he healed. Wouldn't you like a caring prince like him next to you as well?
8. Sinbad from Magi: The Kingdom of Magic
- Episodes: 25
- Aired: October 2013 - March 2014
What about Sinbad and the 8th position? We're sure you can agree with us. He strays from stereotypes. First of it all, he is already a king, the King of Sindria. As far as he strays from stereotypes, though, he is still represented as beautiful, with long, purple air and a mischievous gaze. What about his way of acting and character? He is laid-back, easygoing and funny. He drinks a lot and, at a first gaze, he could seem just too carefree. In spite all of this, he turns out to be a real king when problems arise. He can be serious with matters concerning his reign and his friends, and he is very admired and loved by everyone. Furthermore, he is a true gentleman, in fact he took care of a princess with influence, without taking advantage of the situation. He may be a playful king, but still, or better, right for this reason, he is one that made our hearts beat faster!
7. Lelouch Lamperouge from Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (Hangyaku no Lelouch)
- Episodes: 25
- Aired: October 2006 - July 2007
Apparently, Lelouch could seem cold, mean and uncaring, treating everyone coldly and acting on his own accord, but there's more than meets the eye. So much more that we would say he is THE prince. When he was only ten, after his mother was killed, his father – the Emperor of Britannia – sent him in Japan, together with his sister, Nunnally. Their mother's death and their father's way of acting, greatly affected Lelouch, who felt injustice so much so that he decided to create a better world, to return to Nunnally what their father took away from them. That's how he chooses to fight on the frontline: he becomes the leader of a rebellious group and tries to put down Britannian Empire. As determined as he is, there are still things he cannot sacrifice for the cause: his friends, and all the people who helped him. When he comes to realize that his fight is no longer just for Nunnally, but it is a revolution that can change the entire world, he sacrifices his identity and cut off all the possibilities to meet Nunnally and his friends again, for a greater, collective good. Probably he isn't as sweet as a prince should be, but scratching on the surface, he is just a boy who tried to protect everyone. That's how he gained our 7th position!
6. Cecil Ajima from Uta No Prince-sama (Uta no☆Prince-sama♪ Maji Love 1000%)
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: July 2011 - September 2011
Cecil Ajima is a prince with a curse: he turns into a cat. This curse can only be broken once he finds the true love, by a kiss on the lips. He is represented as a beautiful young man, with emerald eyes, brown hair and a slightly tan skin. He fell in love with Haruka from the first moment he saw her, and – in his cat form – he helped her in many ways: when she was sad and didn't know what to do with her life, when she didn't believe in herself, and when she was troubled. He silently, yet constantly, dried her tears. Only later on, he showed her is true form, when Haruka and the others went on a trip to decide their partner for the final exam. Haruka didn't know how to act towards Tokiya, who turned out to be her beloved idol Hayato, so he appeared to console and sing her a song. His strongest point is his sensitivity: he always cares about people's feelings, and in spite being a prince, he is very modest and humble. We all fell in love with his kind nature and sweetness, that's why, among all the beautiful and worthy princes in Uta no Prince-sama, our 6th position is Cecil's!
5. Dios from Revolutionary Girl Utena (Shoujo Kakumei Utena)
- Episodes: 39
- Aired: April 1997 - December 1997
What about princes as guardian angels? As we said up above, princes appear with the perfect timing, to help their dearest persons in time of need. Dios, from Revolutionary Girl Utena, is a memorable prince with an angel-like demeanor. His light-coloured hair, in contrast with his dark complexion, give him a dramatic halo, in tune with his character. In fact, he puts other’s happiness before his own happiness, and protect people regardless of his own health. Even though Dios is mysterious and gloomy, his way of acting is simply admirable. He saves Utena after her parents died, and tells her to never let go of her noble nature, even after growing up. He wants Utena to remain the same person that he met the first time, immediately recognizing her strength and her potential. Even after years, sticking to the promise to always be her “guardian angel”, every time Utena is hurt, he magically enters her body and heals her. He deserves this 5th position, doesn't he?
4. Ryuuki Shi from The Story of Saiunkoku (Saiunkoku Monogatari)
- Episodes: 39
- Aired: April 2006 - February 2007
Ryuuki Shi is the new, young Emperor of Saiunkoku. He is represented as a beautiful man with long light-coloured hair, and light brown eyes, but his most attractive point is his intelligence. He has a tough past: when he was a child, his brothers treated him coldly and his mother kept on punishing him without an actual reason. Four of his brothers ended up killing each other over the succession, and the only one brother who loved him – Seien – is exiled. So when push came to shove, he had to succeed his father and become the Emperor. He denies his duties as an Emperor, secretly hoping that his brother will come back someday to take his place. Furthermore, he claims to prefer men over women, in order to avoid the matter of “giving a heir to the Empire”. The fated meeting with Shuurei, a concubine brought to turn him into a dependable Emperor, changes the situation. He falls in love with her, and after studying with her, he grows fond of his country and starts to act as an actual Emperor. For Shuurei's sake, he goes as far as to create a law which allows even women to become government officials. Maybe his deeds weren't so flashy, but doesn't his devotion guarantee him the 4th position?
3. Prince Endymion from Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal (Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Crystal)
- Episodes: 26
- Aired: July 2014 - July 2015
You all can agree with us putting Endymion in this ranking, as he is the quintessential of the Prince Charming. All what a Prince Charming can do, he did! He sacrificed everything, in the name of love. He fell in love with princess Serenity, and had to love her secretly because he came from the Earth, while she came from the Moon. The story is dramatic enough to bring you to tears, as it ends up in failure, but when Endymion hears that Serenity's Reign is in danger, he valiantly fights to help her. In his second life on the Earth as Mamoru Chiba, even though he is no longer a prince, his prince-like manners remain. He decides to disguise himself and become Tuxedo Mask, just to help, once again, his significant other. Princes are supposed to bring you roses? Well, roses are his peculiar trait. Everytime Sailor Moon is about to be beaten hard, he throws a red rose and appears to save her. Even when he is just Mamoru Chiba, a common university student, he keeps on helping Usagi in the daily struggles, secretly enjoying her clumsiness. He is represented as mature, stoic and patient. For all these reasons, we think he totally deserves our 3rd position!
2. Arslan from The Heroic Legend of Arslan (Arslan Senki)
- Episodes: 25
- Aired: April 2015 - September 2015
Arslan has long, white hair, blue eyes and rides a horse. Despite the young age, he is the beautiful and reliable prince of the Pars Reign. He found himself in a situation bigger than him at only fourteen, but he managed to deal with everything greatly. Underestimated by the enemies because of his young age, and usually considered weak because of his appearance, he managed to face all the battles that life gave him. Compassionate, optimistic, with the capacity to take advantage of his own charm, he demonstrated strength out of the ordinary. He managed to gather a well equipped group of faithful people who helped him with the things he lacked. His strongest point is the dedication towards his friends, above all towards Daryun. However, his noble nature expresses itself in the way he treats the slaves. He just can't accept how his own kingdom deals with slaves, and furthermore, he never takes advantage of his status in front of the them. On the contrary, he tries to hide until the end the fact the he is the Prince of Pars and acts as their equal. Long story short, this little prince took away our hearts. Don't you agree that he deserved our 2nd position?
1. Zen Wistalia Clarines from Snow Withe with the Red Hair (Akagami no Shirayuki-hime)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: July 2015 - September 2015
Zen Wistalia Clarines gains our 1st, deserved position! He is exactly what we thought about, when we imagined a Charming Prince, isn't he? Beautiful, funny, rich and still humble. He appears in front of the bright and determined Shirayuki right when she is in danger and lonely. In fact, due to her strange hair color, she encounters a cruel fate: she is asked to become prince Raji's concubine. When Zen meets her, she is running away from home, with no place to go. For Zen, it's love at first sight! Without thinking twice, the prince rescues Shirayuki and offers her a place in his reign. Zen has an easygoing character, and it's impossible not getting along with him. He doesn't forget his position as a prince, in fact he is serious about matters concerning his country. What's more, he is difficult to bring down, in fact he doesn't allow sadness to affect him, and furthermore, he basically never gets angry, although when he is around Shirayuki he can become a little jealous. Although he doesn't confess his obvious feelings to Shirayuki, he is betrayed by his actions. Basically, he decides to become her strength, encouraging and protecting her whenever he has to, and being happy with just staying next to her. And so, what do you think? Isn't he exactly the Charming Prince of our dreams?
We only mentioned ten marvelous boys, but the anime world is full of characters with prince-like manners that make anyone go over the moon. Some of them just show their wonderful sides in the right moment, while some of them are just obviously fabulous. Whether it's to save a girl, to help a friend, or even to reach a greater goal, we think these ten characters act exactly like a prince should. We hope you had fun reading it, and of course, if you know other princes who could have fit well in this list, feel free to comment below and let us know!
