Diversity is what makes our world such a wonderful place to live in, and despite our background we all can learn from one another in the most profound way. We all tend to lean more towards certain styles that suit our personal tastes, and so we thought we'd look at one in particular that stands out in anime. The term tomboy often receives mixed reactions with some claiming it to be weird, while others see it as artistic expression. Whatever your observation is the truth is that we all can live however we want and should not be judged for our freedom of humanity. The clothing we wear is merely just a canvas for what truly lies underneath, and so with that being said let's jump right into our top ten tomboy anime for you all to enjoy!

10. Hotaru – Aoharu x Kikanjuu

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 3, 2015- September 18, 2015

Starting off our list of anime tomboy is Hotaru from Aoharu x Kikanjuu. Hotaru has a firm sense of justice and simply cannot allow those who commit malicious acts to get away with it. After hearing rumors that her best friend was fooled by the popular host of a well known club, she seeks out to punish the individual. To her surprise however, when she arrived at the scene she too became part of the gag and was challenged by Matsuoka to take part in a survival game. The premise of the game was very direct, get hit by the toy bullet and you lose. After she loses, she forces Mastuoka to also take part in the game of survival in order to repay the cost of damages he caused inside the club. There are two problems that arise around this: Hotaru is abysmal at the game and the Toy Gun Gun doesn't allow female members on their team.

So this brings us to the main point behind why Hotaru is on our list. As aforementioned, the only way for Hotaru to be a part of the team is that she be male, and unfortunately she isn't. The only method that could get her on the side of the boys is to dress like them and that's exactly what she does throughout most of the series. In order to serve justice Hotaru disguises herself as a tomboy to ensure that she succeeds in her mission, and to have a little fun at the same time too.

9. Asuka Mishima – Kimi no Iru Machi [A Town Where You Live]

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 13, 2013 – September 28, 2013

Asuka Mishima is a little shy and quite conservative as you'll see when you tune into Kimi no Iru Machi. Asuka's appearance throughout the series is very boyish, since she tends to wear her school uniform in the same fashion that a boy would. She wears a tie and only has one button undone acting in a very rough behavior when around friends. One great example of her aggressive style is in episode six where she was on the school roof along with school mate Haruto. Some words were exchanged and immediately Asuka goes for the choke hold on Haruto, demonstrating no fear and that she doesn't play around. The two have had their battles in previous episodes where Asuka pinned him down to the floor, threatening to beat him to a pulp with a bat. She doesn't really have much interest in many of the female activities, so you tend to see her out on the baseball field playing with her colleagues.

Despite her mean feelings towards Haruto she at times does display a little bit of her feminine side, but very seldom as she tries to maintain that strong demeanor at all times. This show is full of comedy and action, so we recommend giving this one a watch to know more about the relationship between Asuka and Haruto. Let us know what you think after watching!

8. Hiyori Sarugaki - Bleach

  • Episodes: 366
  • Aired: October 5, 2004 – March 27, 2012

Making her way to the number eight spot on our tomboy list is Hiyori Sarugaki from Bleach. This short and hot-headed girl is the former lieutenant of the 12th division under the order of Kisuke Urahara, and Kirio Hikifune. Her appearance is very much like a tomboy in most aspects since she wears a red jogging suit, v-neck tee, and her voice in the series is very much like a boy. She has a very brash attitude toward a lot of her peers especially Ichigo who nicknamed her Snaggletooth, due to one of her fangs being longer than the other protruding from the side of her mouth.

What makes her so interesting as a tomboy is that despite her appearance, she is actually quite strong and is able to take down various soul society members with very little effort. She gets picked on a lot for how she looks but packs a punch when you get in her way, and that shows how much heart she has. Hiyori looks up to Hikifune as her mother figure since much of what she has learned has come from her, and so from time to time she exhibits a little of her nurturing side when her team is in trouble. Most of the time she tends to find herself much of the male side of the cast, taking on their bad habits along with their mannerisms. Overall, Hiyori is a genuine tomboy and really doesn't seem to care at all so long as you don't tease her about it.

7. Kagura - Gintama

  • Episodes: 201
  • Aired: April 4, 2006 – March 25, 2010

Kagura is a force to be reckoned with as she comes equipped with some very fancy weapons such as her purple parasol, which shoots bullets from out its tip. She belongs to the Yato Clan who are one of the strongest and most bloodthirsty of the Amanto races. Since Kagura is of Yato relation, she is super strong and can stop pretty much any incoming car with one hand. Despite her incredible strength she can't control it fully and at times have killed her pets due to her super-human abilities. Only one exception comes from this and that is her friend Sadaharu who doesn't seem to be effected by her supreme powers. Kagura is also very flexible and agile; capable of catching bullets in between her teeth and fingers, which is incredible.

So what makes Kagura a tomboy you ask? She often finds herself around the company of boys, partaking in their daily activities. She receives a lot of her influence from Gintama who is often bull-headed and a sore loser, so that makes her quite similar in that regard. Unlike most manga who follow the etiquette of decorum, Kagura finds none of that interesting and would insist on burping, farting, spitting, and fighting just to name a few.

6. Makoto Kino [Sailor Jupiter] – Sailor Moon

  • Episodes: 46
  • Aired: March 7, 1992 – February 27, 1993

Sailor Moon is a franchise that will never leave the minds of any anime aficionado due to its global popularity and wonderful story. We all know and love Usagi/Serena with her quirky and air-headed personality, but who could ever forget Sailor Jupiter? The tomboy sailor scout who always tried to lead the team with her very upbeat and cheerful attitude. In most of the series Makoto was seen as the more athletic type out of all the sailor scouts, as she took part in activities such as karate, and really fancy shopping much. In various episodes in season one we see her wearing more tomboy fitting outfits such as a baseball cap, long jacket, and t-shirt to disguise her female features.

Makoto did have some crushes but for the most part maintained her boyish ways for majority of the first and second seasons, getting into fights with boys quite often as we see in episode 25 titled “Jupiter, the brawny girl in love.” This very same episode is where we were introduced to her, and from here we get to see the more honest side of Mako and her attitudes. Makoto's other hobbies include cooking, since she admitted to Usagi after giving him a riceball in the cafeteria. She tells him that other students at the school never approach her, and was surprised her came up to her. Another great example is in the same episode where she asks one of the supporting characters Joe, if she could be his bodyguard. If you truly want to know more about this tough sailor, make sure to check out the entire Sailor Moon series because it's fun to watch!

5. Asako Nakamura – Ushio to Tora

  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: July 3, 2015 – December 25, 2015

Rolling in at number five is Asako Nakamura from Ushio to Tora. This series recently just completed its second season so if you haven't had an opportunity to watch, we suggest you check it out now. Asako is the childhood friend of both Ushio and Mayuko. Throughout much of the show Asako tends to behave in a very rude manner towards Ushio, but it is because she loves him deep down and simply can't express it well enough. What makes her a tomboy is not just her behavior but more so in her style. Majority of the time she is seen wearing outfits which consist of jackets, jeans, and t-shirts which don't show much skin. One great example is when Ushio and the crew decide to go to the beach, Asako had a hard time deciding what type of suit she wanted to wear, so she went with a one-piece suit covered with a t-shirt to cover her upper body. Unlike Mayuko who wore a more appropriate bathing suit to show off her curves, Asako tried to maintain her feminine approach but still had her boyish character behind it all.

Asako also practices karate as well unlike Mayuko who doesn't really do much outside of shopping for treats and clothing. Asako resembles Ushio in many ways, as the two of them are highly competitive and are passionate about what they love doing. Unfortunately, the two always clash heads which end up leading to nothing, and Ushio wondering why he even bothers with her anyway. As stated earlier, we suggest watching both the first and second season, because this show will blow you away!

4. Karen Araragi – Owarimonogatari

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: October 4, 2015 – December 20, 2015

Owarimonotagari consists of other previous titles that make up majority of the continuing series, and Karen Araragi is the character we've chosen for our top four tomboy. The story of Owarimonotagari revolves around Koyomi who just can't seem to find the right woman, since so many of his relationships end up being ruined due to strange circumstances. Things seemed to look brighter for Koyomi as a new girl, Ougi, enrolls in his school giving him a new challenge to work with. Her odd and emotionless attitude strikes a chord with him as curiosity starts to kick in, forcing him to know more. What he finds out is that she knows more about him than he knows about her, and so the two come together to discover more about each other and their deep dark pasts.

Karen is seen throughout the show as supporting cast for Koyomi, since she is one of the two sisters in the series. Karen's appearance resembles that of a tomboy due to her selection of clothing, which consist of a baggy jacket, long shorts, and a black top covering most of her body. Instead of focusing on the more typical activities she prefers to spend most of her time doing outdoor activities like playing sports. She isn't much into cosmetics either as she is seen most of the time without makeup which shows her lack of care in that particular area. Her fun loving attitude is what really makes her such a great character, because she displays no eagerness to change her ways and simply just wants to enjoy her life.

3. Chie Satonaka – Persona 4

  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: October 7, 2011 – March 30, 2012

The persona series has always garnered attention through its very wicked storyline, amazing plot twists, and very thought provoking gameplay. A lot of its success can also be credited to the diverse cast of characters that we all have now grown to either love or hate. Chie is one of those characters who we have come to admire, and we decided to drop her in on the number three spot of our top ten tomboy list.

Chie often behaves like a tomboy but somehow still manages to stay feminine in her ways. She is always full of vigor often trying to cheer everyone up around her. Chie is also obsessed with the art of Kung Fu and displays a lot of that when she is engaged in battle. Her persona Tomoe Gozen is also somewhat of a tomboy of its own, with its very muscular female figure and paying homage to the late Bruce Lee with his signature bumble bee outfit from “Game of Death”. Generally, outside of watching martial arts films and serving awfully cooked dishes to her friends, Chie is wonderfully calm unless you happen to break one of her favorite kung fu movies, then she just may plant her fists of fury into your face.

2. Ikumi Mito [Nikumi] – Shokugeki no Souma [Food Wars]

  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: April 4, 2015 – September 26, 2015

Shokugeki no Souma was one of last year’s more popular anime from the spring lineup, and this upcoming season will be no different. The show revolves around Yukihara Souma, who has a dream of becoming the world's greatest chef much like his father. For years he has been by his father's side at their restaurant, coming up with various dishes while experimenting with herbs and spices. Suddenly his father decides to close his shop and convinces Yukihara to enroll in Tootsuki Culinary Academy, an elite cooking school where only ten percent of students graduate. This school is well known for its food wars, where students battle it out in front of head chefs, corporate bosses, and critics from around the world. Throughout his journey he stumbles across a tomboy named Ikumi Mito who specializes in cooking meat.

Ikumi Mito or “Nikumi” is one of Yukihara's former rivals in the series and her mission to surpass him with her grade A style of cooking. Her mastery of the meat is what garnered her the nickname, which came from her family background and explains her very pretentious attitude whenever she is around others. Despite having very appealing female characteristics, her behavior is that of a tomboy because she tends to spend a lot of her time around boys throughout the series. She grew up in an elegant setting which correlates well with her elegance in cooking, but her in your face attitude and extreme competitive nature on the battlefield contribute more to the tomboy persona.

1. Utena Tenjou – Revolutionary Girl Utena

  • Episodes: 39
  • Aired: April 2, 1997 – December 24, 1997

Saving the best for last, we have come down to the final chapter in our top ten anime tomboy. Utena Tenjou is a courageous and naive character who had dreams to become a prince after meeting a traveling prince along her journey. He left her with a ring that had a strange rose crest and professed to her that they'd meet again. This compelled her to discover more and so she enrolls in Ootori Academy, where she is faced with a new set of challenges. She becomes drawn into a game where duelists who bear the same ring as her, must battle it out for the prize: The rose bride, Anthy Himemiya, and her mysterious powers.

The story of Utena tries to cover themes of adulthood and identity, since we witness so much of that within Utena's character. Her tomboy attitude at times confuses her because she understands she is a woman, but urges herself that she must continue her journey as a prince to save the world. Her clothing resembles that of a prince, with very little skin being shown aside from her legs. Her behavior is also very boyish because she can't seem to escape the illusion that she has placed herself in, especially after winning the duel having to protect Anthy. Her story is a very moving one and so is the anime itself, so we strongly recommend watching this to see how things turn out.

Final Thoughts

Whether you fancy the tomboy lifestyle or not is entirely your prerogative, but we can all be certain that the lifestyle we choose is just another form of art in this wonderful world full of paintings. Tomboy is just another way of showing that you can appreciate both aspects of life, from the male and female perspective which provides more balance.
