Top 10 Cool Anime [Updated Best Recommendations]

Cool; a simple and elegant word to describe the pinnacles of awesomeness. It’s hard to know what exactly cool is, because cool is just cool in its own way. Coolness is the kind of thing that you can’t describe, you simply know what it is when you see it. The feeling you get when you see something that is undeniably cool inspires you to be the same, because who doesn’t want to be cool?

It’s definitely impossible to “correctly” choose a top ten list for cool anime, because the very industry itself is built on making what is normally impossible in real life into reality, making them cool by normal standards. But we can certainly try our best, and try to see just what about these anime is so cool that we focus on them so much.
Note: This is an updated version of the original Top 10 Cool Anime list that is done in order to be up to date with the new anime being released. The original can be found towards the end of the article.

10. One Punch Man

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: October 2015 – December 2015

One Punch Man depicts the life of what seems to be a bald headed loser who has secret; he can defeat anything that he comes across with one hit. This has led to our main character, Saitama, into crushing depression because he can no longer experience the thrill of battle and combat that he once felt. Everything has simply gotten too easy. Everything changed when he comes across a battle cyborg, and from there his life spirals into a mess of countless monsters…that he one-shots anyway.

This is an anime that exploded into popularity from the very moment it aired. And who can blame the fans? From the very outset, we experience an energetic rock song of an opening that hypes the whole show. This proceeds into some of the most surprisingly good fight scenes to grace the anime scene; all in spite of the fact that he can defeat all his enemies in one hit.
Of course, the coolest part of the whole deal is how he acts about defeating these world ending enemies. He simply walks away in boredom with his back turned to the chaos. Cool guys don’t look at explosions after all.

9. Mirai Nikki (The Future Diary)

  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: October 2011 – April 2012

Mirai Nikki centres around the life of an isolated and friendless boy named Yukiteru Amano, who spends all his time writing his life into a diary instead of socialising. His only friend is an imaginary god Deus Ex Machina, but it seems he isn’t so imaginary after all. Deus throws Yukiteru and 11 others into a life and death battle wherein their diary can predict the future. In his desperation, he teams up with an obsessive fangirl named Yuno Gasai, but there’s something about her that makes him wary.

Unlike the previous entry, the coolness of this anime doesn’t come from a single character. Each and every one of them in this series has such varied and wild personalities that explain the nature of their own diaries. The crème de la crème of the bunch is the crazy yandere fangirl, Yuno. Whilst wearing a smile on her face, she visits extreme violence combined with ingenuity upon any who stand in her way. Despite her violent nature, she always does her executions with style, leaving a trail of corpses in her path. Of course, the coolest thing about her is how far she’ll go just to protect Yukiteru. This gets fully explored in the anime, so go ahead and watch it.

8. Fate/Zero

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: October 2011 – December 2011

Fate/Zero follows a death battle known as the Holy Grail War, in which 7 participants summon a servant that embodies the powers of a mythological hero to fight for the Holy Grail. Each war for the Holy Grail paints a horrific and bloody picture because the reward is too great to behold; a single wish without limitations. Now at the fourth war, Kiritsugu Emiya must team up with his servant Sabre to strike down all in their way.

Fate/Zero is often known to many as the darker renditions of the Fate/Stay Night universe, despite being a prequel. This is partly due to the presence of “Magus Killer” Kiritsugu Emiya, a hard-boiled mercenary that does everything with a cool demeanour. He is not the strongest of the participants, but he is the most dangerous because of the way he carries out his duties. Nothing can get in his way because his calculating and cruel mind won’t let them do so. Kiritsugu is the pinnacle of the cool and (mostly) silent type.

7. No Game No Life

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: April 2014 – June 2014

No Game No Life follows the life of two shut-in siblings as they are thrust into a world where all conflicts are settled through games. Previous war-like races and creatures have to throw down their weapons in favour of exercising wit to win conflicts. This suits the NEET siblings of Sora and Shiro just fine because their previous experience with games make them perfectly suited to conquer the world.

It’s not often that intelligence is cool in real life. Being intelligent is no doubt an amazing thing, but only when applied to real world problems like science and stuff. This anime turns real world conventions on its head by creating a world where intelligence is literally a weapon. If you’re smart enough, you could basically by holding an Excalibur in your hands. This applies to the siblings as well. By our world logic, they are completely useless. But in the right situations, they suddenly shine through and seem almost…cool.

6. Bungou Stray Dogs

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: April 7 - ?

Atsushi Nakajima is kicked out from his orphanage because they suspect him to be behind the attacks on his very own home. Only he knows that these attacks were in fact conducted a mysterious white tiger. Whilst dying of hunger, he rescues a man from drowning in the river. It turns out this man is Osamu Dazai, a detective with a supernatural power. He is part of a firm of other such detectives and invites Atsushi to join him on their supernatural adventures.

So who doesn’t find detectives cool? Because if you don’t, you might change your mind after watching this anime. Despite the premise of characters having supernatural powers, it’s not centred on all out slug fests between super powered fighters. Each character contributes in their own unique way with their powers to solving the case. And the way they do it is well, cool.

5. Hai to Gensou no Grimgar (Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: January 2016 – March 2016

A bunch of teenagers are thrown into a land that they have no memories off. In fact, they don’t have memories of anything but their own names. With no skills whatsoever, they can only survive by accepting the only job that is willing to pay them; being a soldier in the Reserve Army. But they are ill-prepared to face the dangers that plague the world, and when it’s kill or be killed, they must do all that they can to fight for survival.

Grimgar is cool because its main characters are quite relatable. If any random person was dropped into a random world, they would have problems with fighting anything sentient. This differs from the usual Jesus-kun format, where the main character just rips apart all the monsters in their way. Here, the characters take half an episode just to kill a single goblin. The natural progression from the weakness to doing raids on dungeons is cool because it shows us that we can be the same.

4. Death Note

  • Episodes: 37
  • Aired: October 2006 – June 2007

In the world of Death Note, Shinigami can kill any human being by writing their name in a book known as the Death Note. One day, Ryuk, a Shinigami, drops a Death Note into the human world for fun and is soon rewarded when Light Yagami picks up the book. Light is a prodigy of a student in High School that is extremely bored with his life. When the power to kill anyone comes into his hands, he starts a crusade to extinguish the unsavoury elements of the world, convinced of his divine mandate.

What can be said about Death Note that hasn’t been said over and over again? It is quite simply one of the coolest anime to ever exist to the point that even non-weebs know about it. Death Note has one of the most mind-boggling games of wit to ever exist in anime history, keeping the viewer in suspense. It does such a good job of making the villain cool that we actually start rooting for him, which is amazing.

3. Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion)

  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: October 2006 – July 2007

In an alternate universe, the Holy Empire of Britannia has conquered a large amount of the world, establishing itself as an oppressive superpower. One such country that was conquered is Japan, that was renamed Area 11 to signify their submission. Lelouch Lamperouge is an exiled prince who finds himself caught in a fight between the rebellion and Britannia. However, it is a blessing in disguise as he obtains a Geass, the Power of Kings. Realizing the potential he holds in his hands, he leads a ruthless campaign against the Britannian Empire, seeking to crush them completely.

Do you like Gundams? Because Code Geass has that for you. Do you enjoy intelligence and competent protagonists? Because Code Geass also has that for you. From moment to moment, whether it be the all-out fights between the Knightmare Frames and the strategizing of Lelouch, nothing fails to send a shiver down the spines of all who bear witness to the coolness of this anime. Lelouch really delivers, and we mean both the character and the anime.

2. Koutetsujou no Kabaneri (Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: April 8 - ?

Right as the world enters the age of industrial revolution, the populace is beset by monsters that can only be killed by piercing its heart. However, their hearts are protected by a layer of iron. Furthermore, they can create more of their kind by infecting humans. In response, humans have created fortresses out of train stations and the only safe form of transport left are heavily fortified steam trains. Ikoma is living in one such station, and he plans to create a weapon that will allow him to defeat these monsters that have taken so much from the land.

Kabaneri is one of the new anime of the current season, but its popularity seems to have exploded off the charts. Coming from the creators of Attack on Titans, the cool fight scenes, and fluid animations are back and better than ever. Each moment is filled with tense standoffs are intense battles for the survival of each and every character. But it’s not just the drama and action that make it cool, but the very desperation that they put into fighting for their lives.

1. Sakamoto desu ga? (Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto)

  • Episodes: Unknown
  • Aired: April 2016 - ?

Who hasn’t heard of Sakamoto? He is smart, stylish, sophisticated and suave. His charm and demeanour has captured the hearts of all the girls in his school from the very moment he stepped on campus grounds. All the guys are naturally jealous and try to mess with him in all sorts of ways. But Sakamoto is too cool to fall for any of their schemes and always gets out of them; in the coolest possible manner of course.

Sakamoto is cool, cooler and the coolest. Nothing else can compare to what is perhaps the coolest character in anime. It is impossible to compare to the guy whose entire series is dedicated to bending the laws of logic and reason to impossible lengths just to maintain his cool image.

This can include but is not limited to; running across a wall whilst dribbling a stone, flying in a tornado in order to save an injured bird and even stepping from side to side really fast in order to put out a fire. It all sounds very absurd, and it actually is, but that only makes him even cooler, because they are very normal feats for him. All we can do is admire the Chuck Norris of anime, but only because he chooses to let us do so.

Final Thoughts

There are certainly much more anime out there that are cool. Different people might even think different anime are cool. The word cool resonates with each and every person differently after all. It is impossible to nail down what exactly cool is, we can only feel it in our hearts and share our experiences with those around us, and that is cool.

With that said, tell us what anime you find cool in the comments section below!

We have those anime that just feel so cool and awesome for some reason. It can be because of the characters, the plot or just because of the style in general. We all have our favourites when it comes to that special anime we just think is the coolest of them all. It’s not so easy to pare it down to just ten of those kinds of anime but in this top 10 list we will focus on the characters of each anime and how they make us feel that coolness and that ‘it’ factor they bring to the anime table. So let’s get to it !

Top 10 Cool Anime

Enjoy !

10. Pokémon

  • Episodes: 276
  • Aired: April 1, 1997 – November 14, 2002

Pokémon is an anime about Ash Ketchum and his quest of becoming a Pokémon Master which is about collecting all of the Pokémon out in the world. When Ash became 10 years old, he was old enough to be given his first Pokémon which allowed him to start his adventure throughout the world in search for new Pokémon and friends.

This anime is one of those stories which has it all. We’ve got the drama, adventure, action and of course the Pokémon, big and small. The anime gets into this list because of the feelings we get from the main characters of the anime. We have Ash, who’s kind of an outcast when it comes to Pokémon trainers. He is that cool and nerdy underdog of a character which many viewers can relate to. This is one of the reasons why Ash is such a good main character. Because he has that nerdy feel, but also because of his friends and of course Pikachu, he becomes that cool character we have grown to love throughout the Pokémon franchise. Beyond that it’s a truly original anime. Catching strange and cool monsters around the world, who wouldn’t want to do that?

9. Berserk

  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: October 7, 1997 – March 31, 1998

Berserk... everything which the anime stands for is in the name. It’s about Guts, a young warrior, but one of the most brave. He fights for his life in the name of fortune all for himself.

Berserk is an anime you quickly will learn about when you get into anime and manga. Perhaps the name has crossed your path in the search for a new anime and it isn’t so easy to get anything out of just the name but the thing that makes Berserk so cool is the ridiculously big sword our hero wields in this anime. Guts is a cool character because of the strength he possesses and the over-the-top courage he has which makes him a true and cool hero of the anime Berserk. In short, he makes this a truly amazing anime, and that is why it needs to be on this list.

8. Mirai Nikki (Future Diary)

  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: October 9, 2011 – April 15, 2012

Mirai Nikki is about Yuki, a lonely boy who has a hard time making friends. He’s seen as a weak young kid who doesn’t have much to back him up when getting into a fight. Because of his imaginary friend, Deus Ex Machina (The God of Time and Space), Yuki learns quickly that this made-up friend is more real than he could have thought.

This is an anime which will draw you in real quick because of the story and the style. What makes it cool is the characters in the anime and because of the gore and the fighting styles and because of the mix of the genres it will stick with you for a long time. All the characters have very strong personalities, which is why Mirai Nikki gets a spot at this list. The main character, Yuki, is our normal weakling of a boy, but the coolness here comes from our scary but cool character Yuno who has a girlish look. But don’t let that fool you – what makes her cool is her strength with regards to how far she will go for Yuki.

7. Sword Art Online

  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: June 8, 2012 - December 23, 2012

It’s the year 2022 and video games in the area of virtual reality have gone beyond what has ever been possible. With the help of the Nerve Gear, people are now able to enter a virtual game called Sword Art Online. But the main question still lingers: what if something goes wrong with this new technology?

This anime is cool and truly awesome because of the imaginative lengths the creators have gone to. We all know about the limited virtual reality technology in our time, but what happens when we actually reach that point where it’s practically real and what if when you die in the game, you die in real life? The main character is what makes SAO cool – mostly because of Kirito’s skill and because of his philosophy of not giving up. Staying strong even though everything seems lost is what makes him so cool. But it’s not just him, many other characters in the anime add to the coolness level.

6. Tokyo Ghoul

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 4, 2014 – September 19, 2014

This anime takes place in modern-day Tokyo, Japan where new monsters have become a reality. These monsters are called Ghouls and they coexist with the humans. The only problem is that these ghouls love human flesh and blood which makes it a scary place to be living in.

Tokyo Ghoul is cool because of the set of main characters the anime possesses, even though the main character has a weak kind of persona. We still get to see cool gear which the characters use and many other cool main characters and villains. It’s an anime worth a watch because of the cool style and the storyline. When it comes to cool characters in this anime, one clear favorite has to be Touka and later on, the main character grows into a more cool character which is hard to believe when being introduced to his passive persona.

5. Naruto

  • Episodes: 220
  • Aired: October 4, 2002 – February 8, 2007

Naruto is a story about a young energetic ninja in the Hidden Leaf Village with the goal of becoming the strongest ninja in his village, The Hokage. At the time of Naruto’s birth, the giant demon fox, the Nine Tails, was going to destroy the village but with the help of the Fourth Hokage, the village was saved. However the Fourth Hokage had to sacrifice his life and in the process, seal the demon fox inside Naruto.

Naruto is the kind of anime that will have you screaming for more quickly. It’s cool how the worlds of ninja and superpowers are mixed in a very good way. Throw in a bunch of loveable characters and a lot of cool heroes and villains, and you begin to see what makes this anime so cool. What makes these characters cool would be the powers they possess, such as with the Uchiha clan that has the sharingan and when it comes to Naruto, we have his power of never giving up and the will to do everything he can to achieve his dream. It’s definitely an anime that any anime lover should see because of how cool and exciting it is.

4. Dragon Ball Z

  • Episodes: 291
  • Aired: April 26, 1989 – January 31, 1996

Dragon Ball Z is the story of a more grown up Goku with his son Gohan. Of course, all of the other characters of the previous Dragon Ball Anime make a comeback because of the Saiyans, who are coming to Earth in order to get their hands on the seven magic Dragon Balls.

Dragon Ball Z is of course on this list because of how cool and popular it is. One could say that without this anime, we wouldn’t even have many of the awesome shows we have grown to love over the years. What makes Dragon Ball Z cool is the main characters, such as Goku and, well, I don’t know if we need much of an explanation here. He looks cool, and he has a positive and strong attitude. He’s a cool character all over, but in short, Dragon Ball Z is a anime everyone should watch because of the characters and the story.

3. Death Note

  • Episodes: 37
  • Aired: October 4, 2006 – June 27, 2007

This one’s set in a world with Death Gods and a notebook which is most deadly in the hands of a simple human. Death Note is about just that, in a modern-day Tokyo, Japan where Yagami Light gets his hands on such a Death Note and goes on in his quest of getting rid of the criminals of this world. But with the power of a Death God, will it transform Yagami Light to a just God or something completely different?

Death Note is one of those anime with something completely new and original. What is cool about this anime? For starters, we’ve got this notebook which can kill a person in any exact way possible. More cool things about the anime are the characters such as Lawliet L and of course, the Death Gods. What makes L cool is his weird way of doing things and because he is sort of a genius and as we all know, with geniuses, they will always be a little weird. But as for L, he comes across as cool because of his hairstyle, body language and also because of the fact that he is really intelligent.

2. Attack on Titan

  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: April 7, 2013 – September 29, 2013

Long ago, the humans were almost on the brink of extinction because of Titans, giant manlike creatures whose sole purpose was to eat humans. Now mankind has not seen these titans for over one hundred years, but will the big walls keep the humans protected from these giant, terrifying creatures forever?

Attack on Titan is an anime in it’s own league because of the old style which melds perfectly together with the scary titans. As an anime, it’s cool because of the gear which is used to fight the titans and mostly because of the main characters and the giant monsters surrounding them. When it comes to the main cast, Eren, Mikasa, and Levi are just some of the characters that will bring out that cool feeling all over. With all three of these characters, we have personalites which are cool because of how they fight for their lives and their families and friends. Of course, we have other things as well which make them cool too – like the way they fight and act around other characters in the anime. It’s a clear favorite among many anime fans.

1. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

  • Episodes: 64
  • Aired: April 5, 2009 – June 4, 2010

Fullmetal Alchemist is an anime about the amazing Elric Brothers and the art of alchemical transmutation. In an accident were Edward Elric and his younger brother Alphonse try to bring back their late mother with alchemy, things go terribly wrong and in order to make everything right, the two boys head out on a journey to find the Philosopher’s Stone which will amplify their powers and allow them to retrieve their bodies.

What makes Fullmetal Alchemist so cool is of course Edward Elric and his brother Alphonse. The characters become cool because of their skill in alchemy and the strong bond they share as brothers. Not to mention, Edward’s arms and legs being made of automail is quite awesome. But other things which make the anime cool are the mystery behind alchemy and the amazing storyline. This is one of those anime that needs to be on everyone’s list of watched anime. It’s a must-watch because of the plot, characters, brothers, adventure, and of course alchemy.

As said before, to make a list of the coolest anime is not an easy task to take on, but it’s really fun to go through all the amazing anime out there. To look through them and look back on what made them so cool and amazing. Comment on what anime you wish were the number one coolest anime and of course as always stay cool.
