Who’s ready for some Pokémon!? Honey’s Anime is more than excited to welcome the 7th generation of Pokémon along with the newest game titles, Pokémon Sun and Moon. For twenty years, Pokémon hasn’t stopped amusing us with the wide variety of creatures that emerge from the Poké-world each generation. From the classic starter, Charmander, to the newest member of the starter bunch, Litten, it’s evident the flame of Fire Pokémon will always outshine the rest.

This top 10 list will be dedicated to the elitist fire type Pokémon, to those creatures wielding the power of destruction in their breath, to those who carry the soul of the inferno, to the Pokémon who are ready to watch the opposing team burn, burn, BURN!

10. Entei

  • Generation: Second
  • Pokedex #: 244

Entei is a legendary Pokémon but it’s not as rare as one might think. It is said that an Entei is born with every new volcano, thus giving it the nickname of volcano Pokémon and making his volcano appearance a little more obvious. Entei is a movie star, appearing in 4 animated films... but it’s certainly not the star of the party. While it’s faster than most fire canines, Entei’s only outstanding remark is his high HP, the highest base HP out of all fire types. Combine HP with a defense boosting item, Sacred Fire, Rest, Snore; rinse and repeat for the ultimate recipe of annoyance. Entei is a foe you definitely don’t want to see as a first opponent in battle.

9. Arcanine

  • Generation: First
  • Pokedex #: 59

Arcanine comes into our list almost losing its position to Ninetales. How did it win? Simple: the anime. Arcanine is one of the first Pokémon we meet through the anime’s first season opening song “Gotta catch ‘em all!” seeing Ash running side by side with this mighty beast. The mere presence of Arcanine emits authority and power, so much that, in the second episode, it’s grouped with Moltres, Zapdos and Articuno as a legendary Pokémon. This was no mistake, although Arcanine is not actually a real legendary, it has kept it’s legendary status throughout many of the game’s Pokédex entries.

Now, let’s get started with the real firepower. Arcanine excels among the fire users for its incredible efficiency. At first glance, it may not be the fastest Fire Pokémon, nor overall the best, but once you start noticing its attack pool, you’ll see how it can swiftly knock down your opponent. It can learn powerful electric attacks like Wild Charge, HP wrecking attacks like Giga Impact, Overheat, Fire Blast or even Solar Beam. Still not convinced? Just add a high offensive stat, an excellent speed stat and a Sunny Day to watch Arcanine devour teams faster than wildfire.

8. Chandelure

  • Generation: Sixth
  • Pokedex #: 609

Aside from its unforgettable design, Chandelure is unique in many ways. Aside from its previous stages, it’s the only fire Pokémon mixed with ghost type, opening many doors for fire trainers. Scarier than its haunting presence is his base special attack, being the highest among all the fire types. Standing fearless against water types with its Energy Ball and Solar Beam, this powerful Pokémon can also immerge foes into a deep dark place with its variety of dark moves, Pain Split damage if the enemy gets too cocky and finally become a total creep while it chows down on the rival’s deepest slumber with its Dream Eater.

Chandelure is a playable Pokémon in Pokkén, also appearing in other games like Super Smash Bros, therefore it’s easy to see how this Pokémon became many players favorite fire type; but be careful, don’t get too close. It’s a fact that while Chandelure’s flames don’t burn the physical body, they burn and consume the soul, leaving your body empty and your spirit wandering the world for eternity.

7. Heatran

  • Generation: Fourth
  • Pokedex #: 485

Heatran made some trainers giggle due to its silly appearance and strange mix of fire/steel types, like, it’s weak to itself, c’mon! Slowly, everyone started noticing him for being the tank of fire types. Its only drawback is an x4 weakness to ground but this is balanced out by his immunity to poison and great defense towards 9 types, including double resistance to Fairy type. Heatran’s incredible HP and defense are some of the things that will send chills down your spine while facing it, but what’s really scary is the fact that he will literally make your Pokémon go through hell. It has the signature ability Magma Storm, combine this with a Binding Band item to get a literal 100+ damage trip to hell, from which you cannot escape (literally).

If you want to hear the fairy type scream in pain after killing your beloved dragons, Heatran is the way to go. Trap it in Magma Storm hell, poison it with Toxic and hear it screech in confusion and pain while you spam Dragon Pulse and Flash Cannon on its ass.

6. Victini

  • Generation: Fifth
  • Pokedex #: 494

V for Victini! Victini defines the word victory, so don’t underestimate his adorable tiny body!

Victini is a pampered Pokémon, having many attacks that make him overpowered for no reason and two unique signature moves: V-create, with an astonishing 200 attack power and it’s exclusive move, Searing Shot, with an attack power of a 100 and a 30% chance of burn. Victini can learn at least one attack of most of the types available; it’s strongly recommended that you include this powerful psychic/fire type Pokémon in your elite team.

This Pokémon is sort of a celebrity to the poké-world, making appearances in 3 animated films, being the only recognized Pokémon as the number 000, it’s the only Pokémon to appear before starters in a regional pokédex and finally, it is the most famous mascot for Pokémon events aside from Pikachu.

5. Ho-Oh

  • Generation: Second
  • Pokedex #: 250

The first time we meet Ho-Oh is in the first episode of the Pokémon series. A golden mystical creature that soared the skies of the poké-world, so majestic that his flight left a trail of freaking rainbows! We get an official introduction to Ho-Oh as the featured legendary of the game Pokémon Gold, and since then, it’s been clear it’s one of the best legendaries. Traditionally, Ho-Oh appears at the end of every first episode of each season and it’s said that it searches for a pure-hearted trainer to become its master. Do you have what it takes?

Ho-Oh has extraordinary power in the anime, so great that it can bring back the dead, rumored to have been the reason for the reappearance of Entei, Suicune and Raikou. Aside from the anime, it also possesses incredible strength in the game, tying with many of the elite in highest special defense and highest base stat as a flying Pokémon. It's tied to Reshiram with the highest base stats of fire types but shines above all with the highest special defense of all the fire Pokémon. Compared only to the best legendaries, you can feel the blaze of its power just by hearing Ho-Oh’s name. A Fire rainbow peacock that can learn Earthquake, Thunder, Brave Bird, Future Sight and Sky Attack, along with all the fiery goodness, ‘nuff said. Having Ho-Oh in your party will bring you eternal happiness!

4. Primal Groudon

  • Generation: Third (Omega Ruby)
  • Pokedex #: 383

Did I get your attention? That’s right, Primal Groudon is Ground AND fire types; let that sink in. Only the people who have been up to date with the latest games and anime know what I'm talking about; if it’s your first time hearing about Primal Pokémon (not legendary) prepare to get your mind blown. Mega Evolutions are not the only new thing in the poké-world, the game is about to rank up the difficulty department by adding what is known as ‘Primal Reversion’.

In Omega Ruby, Groudon was introduced to a neat item called Red Orb, this item has an Omega symbol engraved on it and it works like a super powerful Fire Stone. Adding it to Groudon will make it, not evolve, but permanently transform or “revert” to its Primal State. Reversion changes the stats, appearance and type of the Pokémon forever, unlike the temporary Mega Evolution. With no limited transformation, this Primal becomes a savage fire beast during battle. Primal Reversion gathers power from nature and “restores” the Pokémon’s original true power.

The greatness of this new stage is captured at it’s best by Primal Groudon and its signature ability ‘Desolated Land’. This ability is like nothing we’ve ever seen, because it completely nullifies water attacks, giving Groudon’s new conflagration nothing to fear. On top of that, Desolated Land prevents weather to be changed from Harsh Sunlight; every weather changing move or special ability will fail. Primal Groudon is so freaking hot that we can see it leaving behind a trail of blazing volcanic mass with every step in the anime episode ‘Mega Evolution Special III’.

Primal Groudon was introduced in the newest game and there’s no sign of it stopping there as it already appeared in two of Pokémon XY anime episodes and is already available as a very powerful card in the Trading Card Game. Looks like the future of Pokémon will be brewing some interesting strategies with the new Primals.

3. Infernape

  • Generation: Fourth
  • Pokedex #: 392

A capoeira fire monkey, what’s not to love? I mean, it can single-handedly defeat gen. 4’s Elite Four and doesn't even need to be maxed out, heck, he can even be level 45 and still murder everyone. Not only that, he’s the king when it comes to the speed of Fire Pokémon, being number one in speed by A LOT. Someone give this monkey an award!

Like many fire types, he has 4 weaknesses but none of them even come close to doing x4 damage to him. Infernape’s unmatched in speed and attack pool for being a fire/fighter type: Close Combat, Flare Blitz, Earthquake… not scared yet? How about Thunder Punch, Gunk Shot, Iron Tail, Stone Edge, Acrobatics; you name it! This crazy monkey has it all. I won’t be surprised if in gen. 7 it gets a Mega Evolution with wings just to throw some Fairy moves in there; Infernape is an unstoppable war machine, devouring in flames everything you ever loved.

2. Blaziken

  • Generation: Third
  • Pokedex #: 257

If you haven't developed a fear of chickens, you’ve never faced a properly trained Blaziken. This fire Pokémon bathes in the tears of his enemies; that’s now insane this Pokémon can get. It’s been blessed not only with the fire/fighting combination but also with the best of flying type attacks and the speed of gods. Blaziken has an appealing image as both regular and Mega Evolution, being very popular among fans but, the breathing really intensifies when you look at its attack pool. Brave Bird, Earthquake, Flare Blitz, High Jump Kick, even Stone Edge and Rock Slide because screw being a bird, right?

With Mega Blaziken the fun just doesn't stop, it becomes such an OP Pokémon as it gains the ability to Speed Boost, automatically escalating his power and speed with each turn. With Mega Evolution, Blaziken gains the highest base stat among the fighting types and the highest base attack of the fire types; the best of both worlds, huh? Blaziken is not only powerful in the game but also shown as a mighty opponent in the Anime, TCG and possibly one of the best fighters in Pokkén.

1. Charizard

  • Generation: First
  • Pokedex #: 6

Of course, Charizard is number one. Fame, power and glory; Charizard has it all. In his regular form, he was already loved by many fans for being the best Pokémon from the first gen. that wasn't legendary. Charizard is one of the only two Pokémon to have two Mega Evolutions, the other being Mewtwo. In his Mega forms, Charizard is quite versatile, whatever his Y form lacks, his X form has. While Charizard Y has the highest special attack out of all the fire Pokémon, is immune to ground and super resistant to 6 types it loses to the more badass looking twin, Mega Charizard X. This black and blue mega Charizard X is dragon/fire types, unlike its regular and Mega Y forms that are fire/flying types.

It’s true that Charizard can learn over 10 useful and powerful attacks with a base power over a hundred; it’s actually not that outstanding if you don't Mega Evolve it when compared to other Pokémon. What wins him the number one position is the emotional attachment fans have developed for it over the years, in fact, Charizard is the number one most popular Pokémon around the world according to poll results from the popular Official Nintendo Magazine and IGN. Charizard has been given his OP status by Game Freak and the Pokémon franchise to please millions of fans, but without its fame and special attention, do you think he’d still be number one? Let us know in the comments below 😉 .

Final Thoughts

Overall, Fire types are powerful and well balanced, it’s highly recommended to have at least two of them in your team. Or you can have a whole team composed of these elite fire users from our list! Surely Pokémon Sun will bring a handful of great fire types, do you think this list can change because of it?

Naturally, this list will bring up a heated discussion in the comments so make sure your opinion is seen by all the Poké-fans here in Honey’s Anime. Thanks for reading this top 10, and remember, in the fantastic world of Pokémon the result does not depend solely on the Pokémon’s power but in its trainer’s skill as well! Keep up the battle spirit fellow trainer!
