10. Machi Amayadori from Kuma Miko / Kumamiko: Girl Meets Bear

Sei-Handa-Handa-kun-Wallpaper Top 10 Funniest Characters of 2016

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: April 2016 – June 2016

What better way to start off this list than with the cute girl who has a talking bear as her best friend. Machi Amayadori is a 14 year old girl who happens to be the miko (a shrine maiden) of her village. Machi spends most of her days praying and giving offerings to her bear friend, Natsu Kumai. However, what she really wants is to get away from the boring rural life and attend high school in the city, where she doesn’t have to put up with talking bears.

Machi can be super funny because even though she wants to go to the big city, she doesn’t know anything about city life, technology or even about making friends. Machi gets super nervous and reacts like a child whenever she gets in a weird or awkward situation. Just like the way she throws a tantrum when she fails Natsu’s city life test, or when she’s asked if she’s had sex with Natsu like the maiden from the legend. It’s always super funny seeing Machi’s silly girl reactions whenever she’s in those situations.

9. An Hanakoizumi from Anne Happy♪

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: April 2016 – June 2016

An Hanakoizumi, or Hanako, is definitely one funny girl because of her sheer bad luck. Anne Happy is about an entire class of students with different sorts of bad luck, who are on their way to achieve happiness despite their misfortune. However, some have worse luck than others and Hanako is the girl with the worst luck around.

This results in Hanako getting in the funniest situations, like falling off from a bridge right before her first day of school. The funniest thing about Hanako though, is not just that she’s a walking misadventure but that she actually believes she has good luck. Hanako is so cheerful, sweet and perky that nothing upsets her, not even when the cute animals she loves so much end up scratching her face or getting her trapped in mud. Hanako is the cutest and funniest accident waiting to happen.

8. Hotaru Shidare from Dagashi Kashi

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: January 2016 – April 2016

Hotaru Shidare has been one of the hottest anime girls of the past year. After all, you can’t spell Hotaru without “hot”… Anyway, Hotaru’s sex appeal is not the only thing that makes her one of the most memorable characters of 2016. She also happens to be super funny in the craziest way, as her crazy eyes suggest.

Hotaru’s determination to make Kokonotsu take his father’s place as head of their store is so strong that she is capable of anything. Seriously, things can get as ridiculous and wild as a candy eating challenge in bondage. Hotaru is indeed a total pervert, but she is first a candy freak. Her passion for sweets is just as hilarious as it is worrying.

7. Momoko Hyakushiki from Nanbaka

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: October 2016 – December 2016

Momoko Hyakushiki is the super fearsome and intimidating warden at the Nanbaka Prison. She’s the absolute authority and is both feared and respected by all of the prison guards and supervisors, including the tough Hajime Sugoroku. No one dares to question Momoko’s authority and any failure to keep the prisoners in line will be punished by Momoko’s full power.

What no one imagines though is that Momoko is deep inside a silly girl who has a huge crush on Hajime. Every time they accidentally touch their hands Momoko’s heart starts racing and she fantasizes about Hajime. What’s really funny about this is that she looks super tough and when everyone believes she’s completely mad at Hajime she’s in fact blushing and smiling on the inside like a little girl in love.

6. Miyano from Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge / Tanaka-kun is Always Listless

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: April 2016 – June 2016

Tanaka-kun always finds new absolutely hilarious ways of being lazy. However, there’s someone who can even be funnier than him, the lovely and energetic Miyano. Miyano is the absolute opposite of Tanaka, she’s boisterous, she has a lot of energy, she works super hard at everything and she’s very childish. So it really comes as a surprise that she wants to learn how to be like Tanaka. What’s super funny about Miyano is how being so hard-working and childish actually makes her ideal almost impossible.

Miyano simply works too hard in imitating Tanaka’s aloof expression, so she ends up looking like she’s giving an angry look. It’s also really hard for Miyano to act cool when she’s invited to have something to eat since she’s a sweet-tooth and she can’t hide her excitement. But if there’s anything even better than Miyano as this childish and overly excited girl is when she actually manages (without realizing) to become lazy and sluggish as Tanaka, if not more. Sadly for her, this only lasts until she stops worrying about evil animal costumes taking over the world. Yes, Miyano’s imagination is that wild too.

5. Megumin from Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! / KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World!

  • Episodes: 10
  • Aired: January 2016 – March 2016

Megumin is the lovely dark wizard we all love from KonoSuba. Megumin is an arch wizard descended from the Crimson Demons, which is why she has such beautiful bright scarlet eyes and why she’s able to use such powerful magic. Megumin’s magic is the most powerful in the entire kingdom and no one can use the Explosion magic like her.

Unfortunately for her (although super funny for us), Megumin can only use this spell once a day, and every time she uses it she ends up so exhausted that she has to be carried home. Megumin refuses to learn any other spell and she loves practicing her Explosion magic on abandoned castles, which eventually draws the attention of a very pissed off Demon General, Beldia. He is the one who gives her the nickname of “crazy-headed girl”, which suits her perfectly according to the locals. Megumin is definitely one crazy little witch girl and the funniest loli of 2016.

4. Sei Handa from Handa-kun

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2016 – September 2016

Sei Handa is very similar to Sakamoto in many ways, mainly in how hilarious are the situations they get in just for being cool. Sei Handa is of course very different from Sakamoto, since he doesn’t actually realize how cool he is in the eyes of other people. This is where the show gets really funny. Handa is so clueless and paranoid that he actually believes everyone talks ill things about him behind his back, when in fact everyone admires him.

Handa is extremely awkward around people, but the rest of his classmates see him as mysterious and cool. Both Handa and his classmates misunderstand every single situation he’s in. Just like when he stepped back from being Class President because he didn’t want to do the extra-work and yet everyone thought he was doing it out of selflessness. It’s just absolutely hilarious to see how Handa understands everything the other way around and how he also causes that on his classmates.

3. Kusuo Saiki from Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan / The Disastrous Life of Saiki K

  • Episodes: 120
  • Aired: July 2016 – December 2016

Kusuo Saiki is a very powerful psychic just like Shigeo Kageyama. Saiki has all types of psychic powers, like Telekinesis, Levitation, Telepathy, Teleportation, Pyrokinesis, Fulgurkinesis, X-Ray Vision and many more since birth. At two months of age he was already capable of walking… in the air. Saiki also became famous as a child for having a 100% win rate at “rock, paper, scissors”, since he knew what the other kids were going to choose, even when they cheated.

Saiki hates being in the spotlight and he considers his psychic abilities as a curse more than a gift, so he tries to lead an ordinary life. What makes both Saiki and this show super fun is the way he reflects about the people and situations around him by talking directly to us Deadpool-style. Saiki lets us take a look into his crazy life full of hilarious adventures and psychic powers.

2. Sakamoto from Sakamoto desu ga? / Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: April 2016 – July 2016

He’s cool, cooler, coolest! He’s Sakamoto, haven’t you heard? There’s no one else so handsome and stylish as Sakamoto. Who else can fly into a hurricane using an umbrella to save a bird in trouble? Only Sakamoto is capable of battling a deadly wasp using only a compass. He does everything with style, even cleaning and brushing floors like a rock star.

Sakamoto can handle anything, from mean gym teachers to jealous classmates and even bullies. He always manages to get out of every difficult situation without any physical confrontation and looking like a total boss. Sakamoto is the guy in school every girl wants to be with and every boy wants to be like. You just have to be careful or he’ll make your mother fall in love with him.

1. Arataka Reigen from Mob Psycho 100

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2016 – September 2016

And the prize to the funniest and most ridiculous character of 2016 goes to Arataka Reigen! Yes, he pretty much disappeared halfway through the show, but that final appearance on the last few episodes was truly badass and absolutely priceless. Reigen was a complete fraud during the whole show, ripping off people, using Shigeo and always making the silliest excuses only to come up in the end to save the day.

Reigen managed to destroy some of the strongest members of the criminal organization Claw. The funny thing is not that he did it with the powers given by Shigeo, but that he destroyed them psychologically by telling them how childish and pathetic they were. Reigen made fun of some of the strongest psychics in the world, and that makes him both the greatest hero in the show and the funniest character on our list. Besides, everyone loves Reigen’s ultimate technique, the Salt Splash!
