Top 10 God Anime [Best Recommendations]

The existence of divine beings is always being debated, but this list of God anime series is not an attempt to steer your belief. Atheists, agnostics, or staunch believers alike, can simply enjoy watching these God anime series without feeling like you need to argue about the existence of “The Mighty One”!

Generally, anime perceives gods as beings with special powers, but yet have some flaws that make them not as perfect as we want them to be. Anime about gods are usually based on mythologies, and also includes some background and history about them. Hence, it can be a great learning experience!

10. Kamigami no Asobi

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Apr. 2014 – Jun. 2014

Kamigami no Asobi is actually an anime adapted from an otome game. Kusanagi Yui is the heroine of the story who finds herself in a school of gods after being summoned by Zeus, the Greek god. The purpose of summoning Yui is to show other gods what it is like to be a human. Thus, it will heighten their understanding of human beings which will also bring the relationship between the two to the next level.

This is a reverse harem anime and since the male casts are gods, they are obviously eye candies. Despite being gods, they are not perfect and have flaws like humans, such as being lazy, bad-tempered or mischievous. There are various types of Gods of different cultures, for instance, Japanese gods, Greek gods, and Egyptian gods. Each has their own distinct personality which makes it seems like they are not that much different from human beings, personality-wise.

9. Death Note

  • Episodes: 37
  • Aired: Oct. 2006 – Jun. 2007

Death Note is a book belonging to the death gods known as shinigami, and all that the death gods need to do in order to kill a person is for the person’s name to be written in the book. Ryuk is a death god who feels bored at work, so he drops a Death Note in the human world, only to be picked up by Light Yagami. With the Death Note in Light’s hands, Light has the power to end a person’s life.

The series involves a darker side of the god realm which is the death gods. While humans may look at death gods from a negative light, not all of them are totally evil. Take Ryuk for example, he is just a bored death god who wants to spice up his life a little. Light is not the only one who possesses a Death Note, as there are other humans who have the books due to different circumstances. The humans who have the Death Note books will be accompanied by the death gods who are the original owners of the books, but the death gods will not necessarily help the humans!

8. Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha (Inari Kon Kon)

She just can’t muster up the courage to confess to him though. One day, Inari saves a fox pup, and in return, the shrine god, Ukanomitama-no-kami, endows her with the ability to transform into other human beings.

As Ukanomitama-no-kami grants Inari the power that the gods have, we get to see how Inari uses this power to find out what it is like to be another person. We always think that it is fun to have this god-like ability, but having it does not mean that we can solve all of our troubles. Even the shrine god, Ukanomitama-no-kami herself, has her own personal troubles to deal with.

7. Kamichu! (The Goddess is a Middle School Student)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jun. 2005 – Sep. 2005

Yurie Hitotsubashi is like any other middle school student with teenage problems like exams and confessing to her crush. One day, she tells her friends that she suddenly became a goddess overnight. In the series, Yurie learns and improves herself as a god and as a person.

So what is a god supposed to do? With this newfound divinity, Yurie does the things that gods do like curing curses and making wishes come true. Even meeting aliens seems to be one of the responsibilities of god! The very idea of a god conjures up the image of being mighty, flawless and graceful, but all those qualities do not seem to apply to Yurie at all, who remains clumsy as ever!

6. Kannagi (Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens)

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: Oct. 2008 – Dec. 2008

Jin Murikiya is the male protagonist in this story. He unknowingly makes a sculpture of a girl for his art project using the trunk of a sacred tree. Due to Nagi’s amnesia, Jin is determined to trace her past.

Goddesses sound like elegant beings but for the most part, the goddess Nagi has a childish personality. As Nagi stays with Jin, he has to put up with the goddess’ demanding and lazy attitude. However, this goddess also has a serious side revealed in the form of Kannagi, which fits the expected attitude of a goddess. Gradually, Jin finds himself falling in love with this goddess who has a split personality.

This is a harem anime, and be warned that it contains ecchi as well. As this series is centered on polytheism, it showcases gods from various cultures and information about them which is pretty educational. The way the gods battle also includes a unique feature known as Warrior, which relies on the amount of information about the opponents in order to defeat them. Girls can also pass information to the gods through kisses!

The goddess Belldandy, asks if there is any wish that Keiichi hopes for, and he jokingly asks for her to stay with him forever, and it becomes true.

The concept of gods and goddesses in this series is loosely based on the Celtic or Norse mythology. There are various classes, categories and restrictions of goddesses. The goddesses are meant to bring happiness to people, especially, those with kind hearts. Besides goddesses, there are also angels and demons in the series. Watch this series if you want a romance series which involves a goddess as a lead!

3. Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai (The World God Only Knows)

In the online world, he is known as the God of Conquest due to his legendary skills in conquering 2D girls. Upon accepting an anonymous offer which he thought was a game challenge, he is then tasked with helping the demon Elsie, to retrieve evil spirits by making girls fall in love with him.

While Keima Katsuragi is not a real god, as he is just an otaku who is great at online games, there are also goddesses who play a pivotal role in this series. The 6 goddesses known as the Jupiter Sisters, were named after the children of Jupiter who is a god in Roman mythology. Each goddess has her own special ability which is kind of like a cast of Sailor Guardians from the Sailor Moon series.

Grateful for Nanami’s help, Mikage offers her his home to which she accepts. Mikage was actually an Earth Deity and his house is a shrine. Thus, Nanami has to take over the role of Mikage at the shrine.

The story is heavily centered on gods, and there are various types of gods and goddesses to be found in this series, such as the God of Wealth and Wind god. The gods have their own roles and have to take care of their own shrines. The gods have their own quirks, for instance, there is a god who enjoys cross-dressing! A young girl named Hiyori Iki takes the hit for Yato in an accident, causing her soul to become loosely attached to her body so she demands Yato to fix her.

Who would have thought that there are gods who go unnoticed in the world, and seek to be more popular to the extent of offering their services at a low rate? The very reason gods are born is due to the wishes of humans, but it seems like many humans have neglected the gods they wish for. If you like elements of Buddhism and Shinto, you can find plenty of it in Noragami.
