The color green may carry dozens of different meanings and interpretations, especially when it’s used to describe someone. Green can mean many things, from envy and jealousy to health, growth or even hope. What is more, different shades of green can convey certain specific traits.
Today, we will check out some of those anime characters who possess that genetic anomaly that makes their hair look both colorful and cool. We will analyze their personalities according to the green on their heads, so this will be something like “50 shades of grey”; only that we’ll make it “10 shades of green”.
So I give you the top 10 green haired anime characters!
10. Shun Andromeda from Saint Seiya
- Episodes: 114
- Aired: Oct 1986 – Apr 1989
He is one of our favorite Saints and definitely one who doesn’t go by unnoticed. With his flashy pink armor and his emerald green hair, Andromeda Shun has got the rest of the saints turning their heads every time he walks in. As his hair color suggests, Shun is a selfless, kind saint with generosity of spirit and a deep love for nature and all living beings.
He is very emotional and always tries to avoid all conflicts. Shun is by far the most peaceful, understanding and diplomatic of all the saints that fight for justice.
9. Sadao Maou from Hataraku Maou-Sama! / The Devil is a Part-Timer!)
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: Apr 2013 – Jun 2013
Our beloved green haired devil could not be out of our list. Besides, he happens to be our favorite green haired burger seller. His hair is a dark, almost gray shade of green called viridian. It does suggest negative traits in his personality, mostly greed, ambition and selfishness. For a former ruler of the Demon Realm though, he is not all that bad. As a human, Sadao is actually thoughtful and polite.
Little seems to remain of the merciless and heartless demon lord he used to be. He is now very submissive and likeable. Although he never stopped being ambitious, his ambitions are now quite different, since he works his butt off only to get promotions at MgRonald’s. In his case, green can mean materialistic and possessive but also sympathetic, kind and most of all adaptable.
8. San from Mononoke Hime/Princess Mononoke)
- Episodes: 1 Movie
- Aired: Jul 1997
San is our favorite forest princess in anime and one of the green beauty queens on our list. The color of her hair is quite dark, the color of a deep and dense forest, the place where she was abandoned and raised by a wolf goddess. The darkest shades of green suggest resentment and selfish desire, and we can indeed find a little of that in San. She despised most humans as her forest had been mutilated by a tribe of greedy people.
However, deep down she is soft and caring as can be seen when she protects Ashitaka and saves him from a certain death. She is so nurturing in fact that she would chew your food for you and spit it into your mouth to feed you if necessary. I believe the green of her hair represents not only the forest and her love of nature but also hope; the hope that her beloved forest would be what it once was.
7. Shintarou Midorima from Kuroko no Basket/Kuroko’s Basketball
- Episodes: 25
- Aired: Apr 2012 – Sep 2012
The green on this all-star high school player’s head is definitely not jealousy. He has nothing to envy the other members of the Generation of Miracles. Shutoku’s shooting guard is one of the most talented and dangerous players out there. Even though he is one of the few members of the Generation of Miracles who can’t get in the zone, he has a unique ability to shoot three pointers. His perfect accuracy and unlimited range have no equal (Kise can copy his technique but only for few minutes).
Midorima shows with his presence both inside and outside the court the high moral standard and down to earth nature reflected on his hair. His dark green head may be a sign of his intelligence, his strong-will and his maturity. Midorima Shintaro is probably the most balanced player in the show.
6. Mion Sonozaki from Higurashi no Naku Koro ni(When They Cry)
- Episodes: 26
- Aired: Apr 2006 – Sep 2006
I had to choose one of the two kawaii Sonozaki twins for this list and it was the hardest choice. In the end I chose the most mentally stable of the two, being mental stability a trait indicated by the color green. Mion is the heir of the Sonozaki house. She has spring green hair, which reflects her energy, her confidence and her social skills.
She is very playful and cheerful, and she’s always playing games with her friends. Her great determination is also something we can draw from her hair color. She is so determined that she wins almost every game she plays with her friends even if she has to cheat to do so.
5. Ayato Naoi from Angel Beats!
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: Apr 2010 – Jun 2010
Here we have someone so vain, so selfish that he calls himself a Kami (God). Naoi, the Student Body President of the Afterlife School has a very dark green hair color. This sea green signifies indifference, selfish desire and certain resentment. He shows such traits in the way he treats the other students, permanently punishing them.
He makes people follow his commands with his power of hypnosis and punishes those who break the rules or show disobedience. Naoi can be a real monster. He doesn’t hesitate when it comes to discipline other people. However, he has a soft-spot for Yuzuru Otonashi; probably the nurturing side of green.
4. Envy from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
- Episodes: 64
- Aired: Apr 2009 – Jul 2010
This character is literally green with envy. The fourth and middle homunculus from FMA represents one of the worst deadly sins and carries its name. His main ability is very much related to his jealous nature. He is a shape shifter, so he can take the physical appearance of whoever he wants.
Sadly, such power is not enough to lessen his envy, so he works with the rest of the Homunculi to rule over humans. His dark green hair is obviously a reflection of his ill-nature and his true form makes him one hell of a green giant beast. He can definitely unleash a lot of resentment.
3. Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop
- Episodes: 26
- Aired: Apr 1998 – Apr 1999
We got to our favorite head-hunter from space. A lot of interpretations of his hair color match his complex personality. Most of these are negative of course. But that is why we love him, because he is such a badass and a troublemaker unlike most main characters in anime. The green of his hair tells us he is selfish, he cares little about others; he is greedy, he’s always looking for bounties and he can be quite indifferent and inconsiderate.
Obviously, Spike is so cool and adorable that we can only look past those negative traits. One funny detail about the dark shade of green on his hair: it is known as “hunter green”.
2. Zoro Roronoa from One Piece
- Episodes: 706+
- Aired: Oct 1999 – Ongoing
The green haired pirate and bounty hunter, Zoro Roronoa could not possibly miss our list. Zoro, the first member to join the straw hat pirates and one of the greatest swordsmen in the world, is often teased for his bright green hair color. His hair speaks of his many positive traits though. He is very determined and ambitious, as he spends most of his time training to become the greatest swordsman (when he’s not sleeping that is).
For a pirate, he is quite reasonable and down to earth in spite of his short temper, and he can be the word of reason when things turn dangerous (like facing Aokiji). As his green hair implies, he is smart, although he has the worst sense of direction ever. This is a man who can get lost walking in a straight line…
1. C.C. from Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch(Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion)
- Episodes: 25
- Aired: Oct 2006 – Jul 2007
Lime green is the color of youthfulness; the color of rebirth, rejuvenation and renewal. It brings new opportunities and foresees a bright future. This is exactly what our gorgeous and beloved pizza girl means to Lelouch.
Another aspect of the green color is the selfishness C.C. admits she has when she claims she kept Lelouch alive only so that she could die. We know, however, that deep down she is really loving, compassionate and loyal, and we love her for it. For all that and for being the hottest green haired immortal being ever!
This is it for our list of green haired freaks. I mean freaks in the best possible way, since we love how cool, deep and complex they all are. I don’t think it’s a coincidence how well-developed and how particular most of these characters are.
You can go ahead and tell us what you think of these characters, the green color, its meanings or anything else that you find interesting.
I hoped you liked our selections and that you have learned a thing or two about what the green color means and whether it carries a positive or a negative connotation.
