You can’t simply celebrate halloween without throwing in some ugly monsters into the mix, since they make up part of the entire ecosystem of nasty creatures that loom in the darkness at night. They come all in different shapes and sizes and will stop at nothing to ensure that at least one human being must suffer in some way or another. Whether it’s terrorizing a city packed full of innocent bystanders, leaving behind a gruesome mess for someone to clean up, or simply showing up in your room and devouring your soul, monsters always have a motive and today we’ll be taking a look at the top 10 monster manga to keep you on your toes.


10. Mushibugyou

Tsukishima Jimbee is a determined warrior who only wants the best out of everything he does, with the impression that a weak warrior holds no merit in society. He was scouted by a representative to join the group known as Mushibugyou, and was given certain instructions to seek out Edo to ensure that everything was in place. However, upon arrival he is startled by a loud scream and runs frantically to check it out, only to witness a large spider devouring the whole city.

Just when you thought insects were scary enough as they are, now they’ve somehow grown into humongous creatures that are now wreaking havoc on the city. No bug spray in the world can save these citizens as they run frantically for their lives, trying to escape the wrath of these monster bugs that don’t have anything better to do with their time. Jimbee takes good care of them easily with his sword, along with some help from his friends who he meets along the way.


9. Hakaijuu

The story starts off like your typical manga, where all of your friends are hanging out in class talking about plans for the day then suddenly, out of nowhere a freakish looking monster attacks the school and friends who were just laughing a moment ago are being torn limb from limb. Everyone tries their best to run but unfortunately meets their demise with a quick slash through their chest, and a bloody trail of organs are your only map of escape.

If you aren’t already creeped out by the manga’s cover then the minute you read deeper into the story, you’ll be even more terrified. The monsters in Hakaijuu are something that you simply just couldn’t imagine or even describe with one word because that’s simply how horrifying they are. They’re so haunting that if you ever saw them in real life, you’d probably want to jump out of your skin or better yet, just pretend to be dead so they don’t devour you. Heads get sliced in half, random civilians are left gutted with their intestines hanging out, all because these deadly monsters have no shame and could care less about what you think.


8. Gyo: Ugomeku Bukimi

Okinawa is a beautiful sub-tropical island full of unique culture and festivities, and the people of the town are welcoming of everyone. However, something just feels off for Tadashi and Kaori as they suspect something fishy is happening. Fishy indeed as these water bred creatures now take to the surface to return the favor for everyone eating them as sushi, and will stop at nothing to ensure they get their payback by any means necessary.

If you were chased down by a large shark with legs, would you try to outrun it? Or would you just simply call it a day and let the shark have its way with you? Whatever you decide on we’re sure the shark wouldn’t care anyway because its only objective is to ensure that everyone on the island is fish food. Sharks with legs aren’t the only creepy looking monster you’ll encounter in Gyo, as the list goes on from a crab looking creature with the head of a human spewing tentacles out of its mouth, to the more classy giant octopus who just wants to wrap itself around you. It’s a freakshow of monsters in this horror classic to check it out!


7. Hideout

Kirishima Seiichi only seems to have his mind focused on one thing right now, and that’s to kill his wife. Just a year before this all went down, Seiichi was a successful writer, a devoted husband, and loving father to his son. Unfortunately not all good things came to an end for him, as his editor parted ways with him and eventually darkness seeped into his life rapidly. He then comes to learn of his sons sudden death which triggers his insanity completely. The couple go to an island for a trip away from the pain and this is where Seiichi plans to kill his wife, however she isn’t having any of that and manages to escape to a nearby cave.

Seiichi on the other hand has other problems now as he finds himself tucked away in a cave with his wife inside, but someone else is also looking forward to his arrival and is hungry for human flesh. If the summary wasn’t enough for you, just wait until you get to the cave chapter where everything starts to fall apart. Perhaps we can say that karma sure doesn’t have any preference when it comes to payback, because Seiichi is about to find out just what pain feels like if he isn’t careful.


6. Nurse Hitomi's Monster Infirmary

Hitomi isn’t your ordinary school nurse as she dons one eye like cyclops, but is still kind enough to help you out with whatever health related issue you have. She can take care of any issue pertaining to body parts falling off, severe growing pains, or even the simple stomach ache after eating a meal. Whatever your ailment, nurse Hitomi has it all covered.

This comedy ecchi manga is sure to make anyone laugh despite there being monsters thrown into the mix, because it’s fun loving and takes the violence away from all the typical monster stuff you read. Every student Hitomi encounters is entirely different from the next, with their problems constantly evolving over time. Monsters with massive oppai can’t seem to hold themselves upright, so she massages those pains away, or young monster boys coming to her pretending to be hurt but only want to stare at Hitomi’s rack. It’s all lighthearted and is sure to keep you laughing all the way through.



5. Goblin Slayer

A young priestess formed her own group of adventurers who would travel across the land to discover new truths, but they suddenly find themselves in a tight squeeze. From out of the depths comes the Goblin Slayer, a man with only one mission tied to his soul and that’s to exterminate every goblin in existence by any means necessary. When word spreads about his incredible power and ability, more and more of these wretched creatures come out of the woodwork to pay him a visit test his vigor.

If Goblin Slayer wasn’t enough of a selling point to draw you in, then perhaps the bloody massacre that takes place throughout the manga will be enough to draw your attention. There’s nothing but non stop action in this goblin slaying series, as one man along with the young priestess fight their way through a horde of ugly and putrid creatures to ensure the world remains in balance, and these monsters are eradicated as soon as possible. Swords clash, blood soaks the ground on which they stand on, and brain bits are plastered against the walls in this epic manga adventure.


4. Ibara no Ou

Twins Kasumi and Shizuku have been infected by the Medusa virus which slowly turns their body into stone. Sadly there’s no cure for this virus but Kasumi decides to place herself into a cryogenically frozen state along with others, until an actual cure can be discovered. Awakened in the future, Kasumi finds herself in a world being terrorized by unruly monsters and constant bloodshed. Determined to find out just why she was placed here along with what happened to her sister, Kasumi attempts to survive at all costs before everything is wiped out.

It’s sad to leave your family behind then suddenly be thrown into a world that’s completely riddled with monsters and violence. Kasumi has to come up with solutions fast otherwise she’ll have undergone the entire ordeal in vain, especially not knowing her Shizuku’s fate. It’s an uphill battle as she must team up with the other survivors and unravel the mysteries behind everything that’s happening, using whatever weapons they can find to take out the enemy before it’s too late.


3. Sidonia no Kishi

The Sidonia is a lone ship that travels the vast void that was once a bustling solar system, but had been the victim of mass destruction centuries ago. Alien beings known as Gauna are these almost invincible lifeforms who were the sole reason why humanity was destroyed, and now they’re back for more. Nagate Tanikaze seems to be Sidonia’s only hope of survival against this onslaught of terror that’s about to inflict pain and create a new war, so the captain of the ship provides him with a legendary mecha known as Tsugumori to wipe out the threat and ensure Sidonia’s survival.

These Gauna are no joke as these massively large creatures seem to have no kinks in their armor, as they continue to obliterate every mecha soldier that tries to stand in their way. Sidonia is constantly at war with these creatures and only Nagate, Shizuka, Izana, and Yuhata have the answers to destroy these unrelenting creatures before they reach the ship. It’s an all out battle in space as mecha’s tear through Gauna flesh, build up special force fields to protect the society, and restore peace once and for all in this sci-fi action series.

After succumbing to an unfortunate demise, Tomokui Kanata is reincarnated but not exactly into what he favored. He comes back to life as the weak and frail Goblin named Rou but fortunately has retained all of his memories, as well as the ability to gain enormous strength and raise his power level through eating. Rou now has promised to himself that he’d live a better life, but in the current world he lives in it’s all about survival of the fittest as new events unfold, and Rou must now fight alongside new comrades he encounters along his journey.

Out of every monster in existence Tomokui chose the short end of the straw and ended up with a weak goblin, poor soul. Despite the unfortunate situation, Rou makes the best out of every moment as he battles a seemingly endless array of creatures who are out to destroy whatever stands in their way. Every character he encounters just gets cooler and more badass, as some wield incredible magic powers to wipe out a group of enemies, or swiftly avoid attacks and slash the enemy with their nifty swordplay. The adventure just doesn’t seem to stop for Rou and his team, so be sure to catch up with this one to see how it all ends!

The demon king has been dethroned and now the kingdom is seeking out a new ruler to take over his position. Surprise! A bulky, handsome, and muscular looking man named Helck has entered the fray, hoping to take the throne and destroy every human in his path. One of the Four Heavenly Gods, Red Vamirio, thinks that something is fishy and doesn’t quite see eye to eye with Helck and his intentions. Is there a secret that Helck is hiding? And just what’s his true motive?

Helck is this mysterious yet hilarious guy who comes out of nowhere claiming that he’ll be the one to take the throne, and to wipe out all humanity with his sword. Nothing much is known about his past or why he decided to even be a part of the competition, but as you read further into the chapters you’ll start to see just why he wants to take the throne. There’s so much random stuff that happens in between battles like Helck transforming into this hulking beast during a game of card stacks, to befriending deer for some reason. Don’t worry though, there’s plenty of monster guts being spilled well into the story so stick with the random antics until then.
