Top 10 Most Powerful Kingdoms in Anime [Best Recommendations]

We love to think about kingdoms, and there are plenty of tales about them. Earth is no stranger to the concept of kingdoms rising and falling throughout history. From kind kings to evil queens, we've certainly been through a lot. Sometimes kingdoms are at their most powerful when they're at peace, diplomacy can grant a kingdom many resources. We're glad that the real life Earth hasn't seen some of the kingdoms on this list!

Have you ever thought about what it would be like if certain anime kingdoms existed in real life? Well you're certainly not alone! Kingdoms take work to maintain, and require strong leadership. They also require loyal subjects willing to defend their cause. Sometimes, kingdoms have advanced technology, and sometimes they have a magical approach. Powerful kingdoms are sometimes evil in nature, and sometimes good. One thing is for sure, the kingdoms on this list have much more than a castle moat! Below are the top 10 most powerful kingdoms in anime from least to greatest.

10. Kingdom of Tristain from The Familiar of Zero (Zero no Tsukaima)

  • Episodes: 13
  • Air Date: Jul, 2006 – Sep, 2006

Queen Henrietta is a kind ruler, her kingdom is beautiful, and contains many aristocrats. Her friends are fiercely loyal! Unfortunately, her lack of military power forces her into asking for help when the kingdom is under attack. When Saito Hiraga arrives from Earth through a dimensional rift (thanks to Louise’s magic), he notices some of their honored weapons are WWII weapons from Earth! Tristain's real power resides in the schools that teach magic. “The Academy of Magic” in Tristain contains some of the most powerful students you've ever seen.

Tristain may not have an extremely large military, but it's certainly got tricks up its sleeve! One of those tricks is a WWII A6M Zero Fighter, which flew through the rift into their world. Enemy forces see the Zero fighter as a “dragon”, and it seems to be extremely effective against actual dragons in their world.. Magic, of course, is still one of the most effective weapons they wield. Saito in particular, turns out to be one of their most effective magic users. Though Tristain is at the bottom of this list, no one should count them down and out!

9. Kingdom of Saillune from The Slayers Evolution-R

  • Episodes: 13
  • Air Date: Jan, 2009 – Apr, 2009

Say this five times fast, “Amelia Wil Tesla, Saillune”. That's princess Amelia's full name from The Slayers series. Saillune is known for its diplomatic approach to other nations. They promote peace and make up the best fighting moves you've ever heard. We're partial to “Pacifist Crush”, one of prince Philionel's signature moves. On top of being politically aware, their city is massive, and employs many powerful magic users that heal. Saillune also has it's own military force, which doubles as a street authority when it's needed.

While largely regarded as a peaceful kingdom, Saillune still builds its military force regularly. When things are too much for them to handle, Phil usually tries to employ Lina Inverse and her friends. Lina doesn't like taking sides, though (unless gold is involved), and she usually tries to avoid Phil's politics. Amelia is one of the main representatives from Saillune, and usually follows Lina around. Lina is extremely annoyed with Amelia in the beginning of the series, but they become friends later. Everyone stay peaceful, or Amelia will smite you with the hammer of justice!

8. Kingdom of Elchea from No Game No Life

  • Episodes: 12
  • Air Date: Apr, 2014 -Jun, 2014

Would you want to live in a world where there was no violence? We think that sounds nice too. Welcome to a world where overthrowing kingdoms means being good at games and gambling! This is a kingdom for the thinking man, luckily, Sora is a genius. Sora forsakes his life on Earth, and chooses to live in another world. When Sora wins a game in this new world, he becomes King of Elchea. It is one of the last kingdoms that represent the human race in this world.

Just because there is no violence allowed, it doesn't mean everyone plays nice. In fact, this is a place where you can cheat, as long as you don't get caught. Sora is a master manipulator with a silver tongue, and he's quite good at cheating too. If you're ever in a poker game with Sora or his sister Shiro, never bet your kingdom. Chances are if you play against them, you're going to lose. Elchea is not a place you want to mess with, and If you shed blood in this world, you're as good as gone.

7. Kingdom of Lusitania from The Heroic Legend of Arslan (Arslan Senki TV)

  • Episodes: 25
  • Air Date: Apr, 2015 – Sep, 2015

Lusitania is a kingdom that doesn't mess around! They love to capture territory and conquer other cities. This tyrannical kingdom is also known for killing people who don't follow their strict religious views. When Arslan (crown prince of Pars) suffers defeat in battle, Pars falls to Lusitania. Arslan, with his remaining allies, then tries to gather aid from other places to retake Pars. With a ruthless army at their command, Lusitania will not hesitate to destroy anyone that looks at them the wrong way.

Far from peaceful, Lusitania is certainly a foe to be feared. Lusitania's actions are based off of the crusades in real life, and we all know how brutal that was. The leader of Lusitania's military is a man known as “Silver Mask”, a seemingly ruthless traitor of the Parsian people. This man claims to be related by blood to Arslan, and seeks the throne for himself. One thing is clear, if you cross the Lusitanians, you're probably going to die.

6. The Bund from Dance in the Vampire Bund

  • Episodes: 12
  • Air Date: Jan, 2010 – Apr, 2010

Imagine waking up one day, turning on the TV, and learning that Vampires are real. Mina Tepes (ruler of all vampires) announces who she is. Mina then proceeds to tell everyone she wants to build a Bund, where vampires can chill out, and try to broker peace with humans. The Bund is already on everyone's hit-list from the start! Vampires are practically immortal. Never once, however, has there been a kingdom of vampires that co-existed alongside the humans.

We can safely say this is one of the scariest kingdoms on the list. Mina Tepes will fight for her Bund, and boy is she strong! It's a good thing Mina isn't really out to conquer anything, or us mortals would be in trouble! Thankfully, Mina has a kind side. In order to build the Bund, she agreed to pay of the nation’s debt in return. It's safe to say this would be much higher up on the list if she wanted to conquer humanity.

5. The Dark Kingdom from Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal (Bishoujyo Senshi Sailor Moon Crystal)

  • Episodes: 26
  • Air Date: Jul, 2014 – Jul, 2015

Queen Beryl annihilates the Moon Kingdom, murdering many of it's people. The evil queen and her followers actually use mind control to help accomplish this task. In one last desperate attempt, Queen Serenity uses all of her powers to seal the Dark Kingdom's power away. Fast forward to present day, and the Dark Kingdom seeks to regain all of its power. Beryl's goal is simple, to take energy from humans and eventually use it to awaken their full potential.

Beryl is nasty, and won't think twice about killing her own. The Dark Kingdom has evil dark energy and magic at its disposal. They use it to make monsters, create unwilling allies, and even fly. Thankfully, they don't have many in numbers, but they make up for it in sheer power and brutality. It's a good thing Sailor Moon and her scouts are around to keep the Dark Kingdom at bay!

4. The Holy Britannian Empire from Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch)

  • Episodes: 25
  • Air Date: Oct, 2006 – Jul, 2007

Here is another tyrannical kingdom you don't want to mess with. The Holy Britannian Empire encompasses areas like North America, South America, and many others. On this alternate Earth, there seems to be no stopping their lust for power. When they take over a country, they give that country a number, along with the accompanying race. The Holy Britannian Empire loves to look down on anyone who isn't them. They're not only fighting a physical war, they use cruel mind games too.

The Britannian rise to power starts in the 1700's when the American Revolution fails, due to Benjamin Franklin betraying them. Fast forward a few hundred years, and now half the world belongs to them. The Empire has the world’s deadliest military force and is feared. The Empire also has “Nightmares” (powerful mechs), that can tear almost anything to shreds. Few rebels remain to fight them, and they have a tendency to kill their own to get a job done. It's a good thing Lelouch has the power of Geass to help the resistance!

3. The Kingdom of Liones from The Seven Deadly Sins (Nanatsu no Taizai)

  • Episodes: 24
  • Air Date: Oct 5, 2014 – Mar, 2015

Framed for murder, The Seven Deadly Sins are banished from the kingdom. Liones is seriously powerful and contains some of the most powerful warriors in anime. Each holy knight can match an entire normal army in power using magic, and insanely powerful techniques. Dreyfus and Hendrickson alone can enslave an entire kingdom (seriously, don't drink the kool-aid). The holy knights are powerful.

Though they could easily topple kingdoms as they see fit, Liones seems intent on killing Meliodas in particular. Meliodas was once a part of the kingdom, before corruption changed it. This Kingdom also has one heck of a secret. The Horn of Cernunnos can summon a Goddess. This kingdom is nothing to scoff at. The holy knights are strong, and an even match for The Seven Deadly Sins.

2. Planet Vegeta from Dragon Ball Super

  • Episodes: Unkown
  • Vir Date: Jul, 2015 - ?

Dragon Ball Super is still airing, but that doesn't stop Planet Vegeta from being number 2 on this list! Planet Vegeta possesses a gravity much greater than the Earth, and gives the Saiyans a much more powerful physique when compared to Humans. King Vegeta is a merciless conqueror with superhuman abilities, as was most of his race in the planet's heyday. Saiyans can fly, shoot powers, and survive in space! Before Planet Vegeta was destroyed, it was a terrifying place.

Saiyans ruled the other races on the planet with an iron fist. Though it was later destroyed by Freeza, it's clear that just one Saiyan can annihilate a planet. In fact, the Saiyans are so powerful, they had to move to Planet Vegeta after destroying their original home planet, Sadla. Unfortunately, their kingdom didn't last very long. One angry Saiyan could mean the end of your whole planet. Luckily Goku and company made Earth home, and they are its greatest defenders.

If the Sayans could just hang on to a planet long enough to establish a larger foothold, they would no doubt be the first choice on the list. However, the few Sayans left alive do not make a kingdom.

1. Planet Jurai from Tenchi Muyo! (Tenchi Muyou!)

  • Episodes: 26
  • Air Date: Apr, 1995 – Sep, 1995

When the capital of your Kingdom is an entire planet, you know you've got it made. Though Jurai is peaceful most of the time, the kingdom will not hesitate to defend itself. Jurai possesses an inexhaustible supply of warships that they can just grow like trees. Jurai's soldiers undergo an injection that gives them superhuman strength. It's also the planet that the Goddess Tsunami was found on! Washu (also a Goddess) has her own technology she provides to the Juraians.

Jurai was almost eliminated by Washu's biological creation (and daughter) Ryoko with the help of Ryo-Ohki. Jurai proceeded to banish Washu do to Ryoko's actions. Later in the series everyone settles in with Tenchi and things are cool again with Jurai. Juraian ships can also produce “Light Hawk Wings”, a power only reproducible by the Goddesses (and Tenchi). It's also shown that certain ships like Lady Seto's ship, have special abilities. Seto is bonded with a Royal Treeship named the “Mikiagami”. In “Tenchi Muyo! GXP”, the Mikiagami uses the “Triple Z” attack to disable all enemy ships. Seto (with the help of Seina Yamada's luck) ends up capturing all the pirate ships in the galaxy with one attack.

Currently in the series there are actually 3 Goddesses living with Tenchi, and all of them share a connection with Jurai. So if you mess with Jurai and somehow manage to escape, you have 3 Goddesses, and their daughters to fight. Good luck with that.

I was born in Colorado Springs. I found myself around friends who liked to play video games and watch anime. The first anime I saw was 'The Slayers' original TV series on VHS. I will be going for a bachelor's degree in 'Health Information Management' starting August 1, 2017. Recently, I moved to Washington State and I am in a town that has less than 2000 people.
