10. Aki Sora

  • Episodes: 1
  • Aired: Dec. 2009

Sora Aoi is quite your sissy-boy character. Before his age even hit double digits, he was already forced into crossdressing by his twin sister Nami, but deep down he held a grave craving for his older sister Aki. A few years later, a flip of the script places Aki at the forefront of perpetual love and Sora on his back foot. However, when the hammer hits the nail, Sora and Aki eventually find themselves hiding below the radar that is society; for the world around them could never understand the in-depth love they bare for each other.

Their hidden affection for each other soon falls awry as Sora begins struggling with juggling his conflicting emotions for his beloved sister Aki, and tangling with his psychopathic obsessive twin Nami.

A love story in which the path ahead is far from a walk in the park. Aki-Sora pits you right in the center of happy ever after, and unrequited love as they hang intertwined on a thin thread of the fabric that is life. Drawing you to the tip of your chair as you eagerly watch to see which outcome manages to hang on, your own questions of what love truly is will inevitably gnaw at your inner thoughts. As these three siblings struggle to find answers, a flower somewhere loses its pedal. Will their love for each other be mutual once all the petals are drawn, or are they bound to grow further apart from one another?

9. Saikin, Imouto no Yousu ga Chotto Okashiinda ga (Recently, my sister is unusual)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jan. 2014 – Mar. 2014

Getting a new family member isn’t always a celebratory event for welcoming a newborn. Instead, what you can get is a slapped on half of a quilt without matching patterns. That is exactly what Kanzaki Mitsuki inherits once her mother decides to remarry to a divorced man with a son. Subsequently, leaving Mitsuki with a straight out-of-the-box, brand new stepbrother, Yuuya. Things get interesting when her new stepdad heads overseas for business with Mitsuki’s mother not too far behind. Thus leaving the two newly bound siblings to themselves.

Abandoned by her mother, and attached to someone she barely knows. To say Mitsuki grew distant would be lacking in statement. But this dreaded life soon heats up when a lone ghost, Hiyori Kotobuki, utilizes Mitsuki’s body in order to get to her savior, her ticket into the heavens, her one true love in life, Yuuya.

A one-sided love from both ends meets together in this unusual story of sister and brother. Yuuya’s obsession with his sister Mitsuki, becomes reality when Hiyori’s obsession with Yuuya makes her take the initiative in order to fulfill her goal. Two severely opposite halves make for an interesting attempt at becoming whole in this ecchi piece. A twisted approach at love is what makes Recently, my sister is unusual (also known as ImoCho) a fascinating series worth every minute of your time.

8. Boku wa Imouto ni Koi wo Suru

  • Episodes: 1
  • Aired: May 2005

Twins can often share a relationship like none other, even more so than your average sibling pair, but for Yori Yuuki and Iku Yuuki, things are little more deeply rooted than that. Extremely close from birth this twin pair were inseparable. Constantly confessing his love for his sister Iku, and declaring how he would marry her one day was looked upon as but a farce from their parents who brushed it off without a second thought. As Yori grew older, his feelings for his sister only grew stronger.

Spiraled into a deep, hopeless love, Yori struggles with the guilt of the sin of loving his own sister. However, Yori may not be the only sinner in his family when his sister, Iku eventually comes to terms with her feelings towards him as well. And so starts the beginning of a life of regret, guilt, unrequited love, and tailspins.

The regret of loving your sibling in a society built on chastising such a ‘disgraceful’ act, positioned in the same ring with an undying, unnerving, need to act out your true desires. A family crisis such as Boku wa Imouto ni Koi wo Suru has never approached your TV screens in such a heart wrenching, mind, and body connecting manner ever before. The climb to the top is derailing and strenuous, while the descent downwards is too steep to bear. That is the story of true love and a story that you shouldn’t hope to miss out on.

7. Kono Naka ni Hitori, Imouto ga Iru! (NAKAIMO – My Little Sister Is Among Them!)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jul. 2012 – Sep. 2012

Forced to find a life partner before graduation may seem like an unrealistic task to the average bunch, but it’s nothing short of reality for Shougo Mikadono, son of the late Kumagoro Mikadono, and heir to the throne of The Mikadono Group. A worldwide company based in Japan.

After his father passes, Shougo, whom is next in line to assume the head of his father’s company, is tasked with finding a lifetime partner. As according to his father’s will, Shougo will inherit his high horse following his graduation, provided that he finds a lady companion prior. In a school littered with women, that should come as an easy task for someone as popular as Shougo right? Wrong. Things only get worse once Shougo becomes aware that amongst his jaw-dropping candidates lies his long lost younger sister. Now brings forth the question of whether or not Shougo will win this game of rabbit doubt, or will he set himself up to be paired with his own sister for the rest of his life?

A fun twist on a siscon, romance tale; NAKAIMO unfolds the quirks of what it takes to find the bird amongst the trees. While Shougo may not necessarily be obsessed with his sister, he’s only one wrong decision away from a life of sisterly matrimony.

6. Ane Koi: Suki Kirai Daisuki

  • Episodes: 2
  • Aired: Feb. 2013 – May 2013

Possibly the most vulgar addition to the list yet, Ane Koi: Suki Kirai Daisuki is a straight to the action love story. Only, in this romance tale, love hangs in the face of two siblings who seemingly can’t keep their hands off each other. Yoshiharu Hayami, a high school student who lives alone with his older sister Sana Hayami, is conflicted with his uncontrollable feelings and urge to commit the ethically frowned upon act of incest.

Be advised, this sister-brother duo can be dangerous if not handled with care. Jam-packed with unforgettable romance, blatant angles, and temperature raising scenes, Ane Koi is a great piece for those of us whom may want a little bit more ‘bang’ during those romantic story times before bed. Do you dare to watch?

Flirty, lustful and everything else that follows, these girls crave for him like an overstretched stomach to a double chocolate banana cake. But Keita isn’t willing to give in to their advances quite so easily.

Give it an inch, it’ll take a mile. Will his misunderstood feelings for his sisters evolve into a full blown sister complex? The only way to find out is by watching.

3. True Tears

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: Jan. 2008 – Mar. 2008

Falling in love with the person who lives underneath the same roof as you could be a blessing, or an outright curse, and Shinichirou Nakagami for one knows this all too well. Having fallen for his loving sister Hiromi, Shinichirou is placed in the prime position for the first take at her heart, but Hiromi’s dual natured personality makes that all but reality.

Popular, high marks, and a keen athleticism make Hiromi one the most popular gals in school, but at home, the story is far from the same. Cold, unsociable, and similar to the likes of a hermit crab within a protective shell are what define Hiromi underneath the roof of her own home.

When a strange girl named Noe Isurugi enters the picture, Shinichirou is caught within a stretch between his growing feelings towards Noe, and his eagerness to unseal Hiromi’s enclosed heart.

A story plot that just keeps giving, approached with its unique atmosphere will have any siscon lover wanting to know what comes next at the close of each episode.

2. Himouto! Umaru-chan

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jul. 2015 – Sep. 2015

Your typical top of the class female eye candy isn’t always as sweet as the wrapper makes it out to be. Umaru Doma sits at the pinnacle of that character description with her good looks, good grades, and simply put, good everything. Too bad she’s nothing short of a couch potato once she gets home, and her brother Taihei is always set to take the brute end of the stick as a result.

Underneath the cascade of her infamous hamster hoodie, Umaru is gladly willing to depend entirely upon her brother to take care of everything that’s anything. A sibling tug-of-war that never gets old. With her mischief hunting companions Kirie Motoba and Nana Ebina, as well as her neck and neck rival Sylphinford Tachibana, comes a fun slice of life work of art.

This is one laid back adventure worth kicking your feet up all weekend to enjoy.

1. Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei (The Irregular at Magic High School)

  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: Apr. 2014 – Sep. 2014

In a world where sorcery is a formalized practice, it’s only natural for the governing forces to weigh its hand in on the matter. But with those capable of using such powers chosen by genetics, it leaves only a handful of candidates. Treated as a commodity, these individuals are forced into schools geared towards magic education and pushed off into similarly related professions. With technology suited to refine the use of magic, a new age has dawned upon us in this magical anime adaptation, The Irregular at Magic High School.

Tatsuya Shiba, a ‘blessed’ individual with magic abilities, is tasked with guarding his sister Miyuki Shiba, who is expected to be the successor of the Yotsuba master clan. With Tatsuya and Miyuki separated by school standards of advanced (“Blooms”) and inept (“Weeds”) magicians, this sibling pair is set out on a tireless course for the supernatural, and downright cool.

A more muted approach to our typical sister and brother infatuation, comes an anime that spells out what a sister complex could mean beyond the lustful, figure worshiping, incest directed presentations of many of its anime peers. A Sci-Fi batter mixed and glazed with romance and magic. Need we tell you why you should watch?
