Top 10 Strongest One Punch Man Anime Characters [Updated]

Now that season 2 to One Punch Man has ended, we thought it would be a great opportunity to re-evaluate who the strongest characters are in the anime (keep in mind the list says the anime, NOT the manga). The latest season introduces audiences some new villains, and gives more opportunity for previously established heroes to shine. Some characters that we are listing are going to be obvious, some are going to be fresh. However, each character contributes something in regards to how they show great strength both physically and in character.

10. Bang

Kicking off our list is Bang, also known as Silver Fang, one of the S-class heroes top 3! He may be old, but thanks to his lifelong dedication to the martial arts, he is still in top shape to be one of the best. You know Bruce Lee’s saying of how water can flow or crash? Bang pretty much personifies that since the name of his fighting style is the Water Stream Rock Smashing Fist. Along with Saitama, he’s one of the few heroes that can defeat a dragon class villain with ease which is enough to say that he’s one of the strongest as he was the one who finally had to intervene and put Garou out of commission. Thanks to his age and experience, he contributes a lot of wisdom to this installment.

9. Bomb

At number 9 is Bomb, who happens to be the older brother of Bang. Being the older brother, it is obvious to conclude he is a senior citizen, but still in enough shape to go out there and kick some ass with some Kung Fu fighting. However, what makes him different from Bang is that as opposed to being like water with his fighting style, he prefers to be like the wind. And like Bang and Saitama, he is also capable of taking out Garou and/or other dragon class villains.

8. Metal Bat

On the outside, Metal Bat looks like your typical teenage delinquent you would see in a 1980s anime/manga. However, he happens to be an S-class hero whose gimmick is dressing him up in such a style with his baggy clothes, donning a pompadour, and carrying a metal bat, hence his namesake. He’s an act first, never think kind of guy due to the nature of his get up. Like Saitama, he’s not trained and just goes at it and can go toe-to-toe against demon and dragon class villains, and his swing is the equivalent to that of a prime Mark McGuire, Barry Bonds, Jose Canseco and Sammy Sosa all put together (on steroids). And the more he’s pumped up for a fight, the stronger he becomes! So when you look at him, don’t be quick to judge since he’s a tough punk, but he’s a tough punk that’s on our side!

7. Watchdog Man

If looks could be deceiving, then Watchdog Man is the perfect example of that cliché. He looks like an ordinary guy cosplaying that he’s Hachiko, the dog who has a statue outside Shibuya Station in Tokyo, but he’s actually an S-class hero! If the man behind the costume was a method actor, then he’s certainly dedicated to his craft with how he presents himself as a dog in every sense of the word. As to what qualifies him to making this list, he’s actually one of the first heroes in the second season to go toe-to-toe against Garou, and give him a run for his money! He combats Garou in a way where he goes as far as emulating a dog’s movement (let’s call it the dog style of Kung Fu!) in order to throw Garou off balance mentally and gain the upper hand. The fact that he could go against Garou, who was taking out A-class and some S-class villains shows he’s of great strength.

6. Gouketsu

Gouketsu is another main villain in the season 2 as it pertains to the tournament. His goal was to take the best fighters, and make them into monsters like him. While his backstory establishes him as someone who was already a strong martial artist, his presence in the now of season 2 shows how powerful he becomes when his monster form allows him to take on the tournament’s best competitors with ease. While we’ll never know how a fight between Suiryu and Gouketsu in his true human form can go, he takes out Suiryu, the heavy favorite like he’s a white belt. Of course, all of that changes when Saitama saves the day, but that’s not something we’re going to get into. The fact that he can take out the best of the best when it comes to martial artists as a monster should be enough to demonstrate how strong he is.

5. Genos

Genos, Saitama’s self-appointed disciple, is another strong character for enhanced reasons. He’s the ultimate cybernetic experiment and whenever he’s damaged, he comes back stronger than ever. Not only does it make him physically strong, but extremely fast and packed with crazy fire power that would make any nation’s military jealous! Thanks to having features that can emit energy blasts. He contributes a lot to many of the battles of this season, and is capable of any other S-class since he’s the ideal in cybernetic technology.

The fact that he wants to always do the right thing also makes him strong, and he wants to become better, which is why he seeks Saitama’s guidance. Unlike the rest of the Hero Association who see Saitama as a nobody, he recognizes Saitama for who he is and encourages him to be more assertive, but eventually comes to terms with Saitama refusing to be part of a system. Eventually, it’s his content to allow people to be themselves is what makes Genos further develop as a character.

4. Puri-Puri Prisoner

  • Episodes: ___
  • Aired: ___

Returning from our weirdest characters list is Puri-Puri Prisoner. Despite his gimmick of being a prisoner, he’s actually an S-class hero! As we shared in that list, he’s the guy who probably don’t want to be locked in a cell with, but that’s a different topic for a different article. He has tremendous physical strength as he can break through inches of steel, and defeat monsters with bear hugs like he’s Brock Lesnar when he defeated Hulk Hogan with one. Not only does he have natural muscles, he can also transform to make his muscles even bigger to a point that we already shared in the weirdest characters list. However, not only does he have tremendous strength, he can also take heavy damage, run at great speeds, and killer stamina that allows him to last on land and in water. Despite his supposed criminal past, we give it to him for wanting to redeem himself as a hero, and that’s what makes him strong.

3. Tatsumaki

Tatsumaki, or the Tornado of Terror, is ranked number 2 on the S-class hero list and for good reason. While her strengths aren’t physical in nature, but they are in the supernatural, which is where her namesake comes in. She may look like a little girl, but considering the nature of her powers, it would be wise to not underestimate her (and also adding to the truth she’s pushing 30). Her namesake is just the tip of the iceberg since the basis of her powers are entirely psychic and telekinetic in nature pretty much making her One Punch Man’s version of Professor X. So thanks to her presence, we can learn that there are characters who can be strong in a supernatural sense, and at times, that can be much more powerful than physical strength.

2. Garou

At a far distant second, we have to put in one of the co-lead villains of season 2, Garou, a martial arts master. When you take into consideration the nature of his character, he’s more of an anti-villain as opposed to your typical megalomaniacal one who is hell bent on world domination. Instead, he wants to prove that he’s the best, and the series does a great job of showing why he doesn’t have a positive view of heroes. As to why he’s an anti-villain, he doesn’t want to kill his opponents, and is willing to go out of his way to make sure no innocent lives, especially children, get caught in the crossfire.

In addition to his (emphatically) moral character, the reason why he’s strong is that he challenges a good number of S class heroes throughout the duration of the series. Some give him a tough fight, but in most of the fights, he comes out on top. Even when he’s severely injured after being clobbered by Saitama, he can still take on give or take 5 (lower ranked) heroes by himself. Like Saitama, he trained his body hard to make it a lean mean fighting machine, but nowhere near his one punch power results. In the end, he may be bad, but he’s bad for good reasons.

1. Saitama

Now the moment we’ve all been waiting for. Anyone can say that Saitama is the strongest and there’s really no further explanation as to why. Everybody and their mother already knows why. We’ve already covered that on our list of most overpowered characters and the title of “One Punch Man” itself is pretty much an explanation as to why. However, we don’t want to talk about what makes her physically strong, but how he’s strong in character. By reasons of tabula rasa, there’s really no reason to further develop his character, and audiences are ok the way he is. However, the series does go out of his way to give him some direction by having him enter a martial arts tournament disguised as Charanko, his acquaintance. Yes, he can win by taking out every contestant in a single punch but he does it to get a better first hand understanding of the martial arts.

The fact that despite his strength, he’s still willing to learn something new shows that he is still capable of being developmental in a spiritual sense as opposed to a physical one. Granted he gains nothing from it, but Saitama’s greatest strength is not just how he can take out villains in a single blow, but how he contributes to the development of those around him. When he sees someone discouraged, he’s willing to cheer them up and encourages them to never give up. The fact that he goes out of his way to help others morally and physically is what makes him the strongest.

Final Thoughts

The whole notion of wanting to be strong or having super strong characters has been done to death in popular culture. However, these stories are going to exist as long as we have comics, animation, and movies. It all depends on how they’re creatively expressed, and One Punch Man does a great job of that by both parodying the superhero genre, and yet paying homage to it. Saitama is unarguably the strongest, but sometimes being strong means nothing when you don’t have the character to show for it and that’s the ultimate lesson we get from Saitama and the rest of the cast of One Punch Man. For Saitama, he just does it because he wants to. For others, they want validation. Both reasons are ok, but you have to work hard for it and make the sacrifices. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. As Kamogawa in Hajime no Ippo once said said, hard work may not always pay off, but those who succeeded worked hard and the cast of One Punch Man demonstrates that in many numerous ways, and that is the source of not just having strength, but what you do with it.

One Punch Man is a popular manga series turned anime that became even more popular after it became animated. How could a show where the main character can defeat all his enemies in one hit be so popular? That’s because there are cool fight scenes regardless of the overpowered hero. Everyone else is extremely strong in their own way and are capable of putting up epic fight scenes with each other…as long as they don’t fight the main character, Saitama.

Take note that while some of the characters are stronger than the ones on the list, they’ve yet to show off their abilities. Hence, we’re only including those that have been in actual fights.

Join us as we count down the Top 10 Strongest One Punch Man Characters.

10. Sonic “Speed of Sound“

one-punch-man-wallpaper-700x280 Top 10 Strongest One Punch Man Anime Characters [Updated]

Known to many as the man with the most redundant name ever, Speed of Sound, or Sonic for brevity, is one of the fastest characters in the series. Though he can’t really move fast enough to cause sonic booms, he is able to sprint across a long distance at extremely high speeds. When he attacks someone with his sword, it is reminiscent of a samurai using an extremely quick slash of Iaido as he appears behind his opponent after attacking.

He is usually calm in battle, mostly due in part to his ninja training. However, hidden within him is a battle maniac that simply craves for battle. When he meets Saitama, the hero of the series, none of his attacks have any effect on the caped baldy. This gets his blood pumping as he enjoys fighting those who are stronger than him. Despite his skills however, he ranks quite low on the power chart. That just shows how strong some of the characters in One Punch Man are.

9. Puripuri Prisoner “Huff-Puff Prisoner”

one-punch-man-wallpaper-700x280 Top 10 Strongest One Punch Man Anime Characters [Updated]

Though he is the weakest hero on the S-rank list, Puripuri Prisoner’s strength is still nothing to scoff at. With rippling muscles from top the bottom, Puripuri Prisoner is built like a tank and he acts like one as well. Striding into combat with nothing but his bare fists, he blows away the opposition with his raw strength and musculature.

Puripuri Prisoner also has a mode named Angel Style, in which he increases his strength to its maximum limit, bringing them beyond the threshold. It has the…unfortunate side effect of increasing his muscle mass, causing all his clothes to be torn off completely. Nevertheless, when in this mode, he’s shown to be many times stronger and has even caused severe damage to the Sea King, someone Genos had trouble with. Like him or hate him, Puripuri Prisoner is one tough son of a gun.

8. Bofoy “Metal Knight “

one-punch-man-wallpaper-700x280 Top 10 Strongest One Punch Man Anime Characters [Updated]

Often shown to be a callous individual, Bofoy’s hero name is “Metal Knight” because of his preference in using a robot that looks precisely what the name implies, a metal knight. Bofoy is a true scientist at heart, trying out different configurations with his robot or letting a bunch of hooligans steal his experimental suit just to see how far they can be pushed.

His personality aside, an individual with access to all the technology he has at his disposal is not to be reckoned with. He has enough tech in his arsenal to arm an army and with the amount of robots he has, he could easily cause a disaster rating to rise in the cities of A-Z. Bofoy is definitely someone you don’t want to get on the bad side of.

7. Genos “Demon Cyborg”

one-punch-man-wallpaper-700x280 Top 10 Strongest One Punch Man Anime Characters [Updated]

A fan favourite, Genos is a cyborg who works together with his professor to find out who attacked his town and killed his whole family. One day, he runs into Saitama, who handily dispatches every foe in his way with a single punch. In awe of his power, Genos forces Saitama to apprentice him in hopes of somehow getting some of that strength for himself so that he may avenge his family eventually.

But that doesn’t mean Genos is weak. Though his ranking on the S-rank list is still rather low, that can be attributed more to experience than any weakness on his part. With cybernetic enhancements boosting his physical abilities to the max, Genos moves at inhumane speeds and attacks with inhumane strength. On top of that, he has multiple projectile type attacks that can cause extreme devastation to his enemies. Out of all the heroes who attacked the Sea King, he was the one who did the most damage in the end, barring Saitama. With a thousand and one ways to kill anyone, it's doubtful anybody wants to cross him anytime soon.

6. Deep Sea King

one-punch-man-wallpaper-700x280 Top 10 Strongest One Punch Man Anime Characters [Updated]

Go back to the title, realise it says characters instead of heroes, then we can continue on with the article. Because how can we not include this beast when it comes to the strongest? The Sea King comes from the same cliché that perpetuates the entirety of the series, from the Ground King to the Air King to the Sea King. Arguably, the Sea King sounds like the strongest.

When battling Puripuri Prisoner, he had some difficulty. But it was revealed that he wasn’t even in his full strength as it wasn’t raining. When the rain started pouring down, it became all over for the heroes fighting him. They were immediately batted aside and squashed under his heel. Only the timely intervention of Saitama saved them from him. And well…comparing anyone to Saitama isn’t that fair so the Sea King is still really tough.

5. Atomic Samurai

one-punch-man-wallpaper-700x280 Top 10 Strongest One Punch Man Anime Characters [Updated]

The Atomic Samurai is a cool operator who holds his pride close to his heart. When Saitama first tried to shake his hand, he refused, stating that he would only acknowledge him when he got into the higher ranks first. Despite that, he is not unkind. He has his own school of disciples who take after his unique techniques. One of his disciples, Iaian, becomes severely injured during the alien invasion and he shows a great deal of care and concern for him.

Despite not being the highest on the list, the Atomic Samurai is nothing to scoff at. He uses a katana to dispatch most of his opponents with ease, not only boasting superior technique but all round better stats as well such as strength or reflexes. His signature technique, Atomic Slash, cuts the enemy into uncountable pieces in a single instant, leaving behind nothing but dust. When you meet him, don’t even blink, it’ll be over before you know it.

4. Bang “Silver Fang”

one-punch-man-wallpaper-700x280 Top 10 Strongest One Punch Man Anime Characters [Updated]

Bang is that one oldie that’s been around so long that he should have become old and frail, yet no one wants to mess with this guy. It’s partly due to his rank as number 4 on the S-rank list. However, it's most probably because of what a beast and badass Bang can be. Earning his moniker of Silver Fang, he darts around the battlefield decimating his foes with ease, his silver hair flashing all the while he is doing so.

The Silver Fang utilises the style of Water Stream Rock Smashing Fist. It’s a relatively powerful fighting style that seems to take after forms of martial arts like Tai-chi, in which strength is not used but rather the strength of the opponent is turned against them. Despite this high level of technique, Bang possesses one of the strongest bodies in the entire series. With a technique that requires zero strength wielded by a guy who has plenty to spare, it is no surprise that he places so high on the list at all. Just don’t let him con you into being his disciple!

3. Tatsumaki “Terrible Tornado”

one-punch-man-wallpaper-700x280 Top 10 Strongest One Punch Man Anime Characters [Updated]

The older of two sisters, Tatsumaki received her moniker due in fact to the powers that she has received from being an Esper. Unlike the sissy levitations that normal psychics do like lifting a spoon or a small object, Tatsumaki lifts whole cities at a time to bombard the enemy with. The trail of destruction she often leaves behind has lent her the name of Tornado of Terror.

She doesn’t just have power. When needed too, she could precisely fire rubble into the cannons of the enemy ship and cause them to backfire on their own crew. With the further use of her psychic abilities to boost her lack of physical ones, Tatsumaki is a strong contender for being one of the most powerful beings in the series.

2. Boros “Lord Boros”

one-punch-man-wallpaper-700x280 Top 10 Strongest One Punch Man Anime Characters [Updated]

Boros is an extraterrestrial being that has conquered so many planets and galaxies that he has begun having an existential crisis. He’s very bored. There seems to be nothing capable of challenging him anymore and he’s unhappy about that. One day, he receives a prophecy that there exists someone on Earth who can give him a fight of the centuries. Like every cliché villain ever, he gathers his armada and invades Earth.

This is an alien so powerful, that his underlings are capable of giving S-rank heroes a hard time. And it shows. When faced against the strongest character of the series, instead of going down with one punch like everyone else, he actually takes multiple hits from Saitama before losing. In fact, this is the first time we see Saitama putting effort into fights, using his special techniques like the serious serious series. Lord Boros is the second strongest throughout the series so far purely for the fact that he managed so long against the Caped Baldy, after who else can boast of that fact?

1. Saitama “Caped Baldy”

one-punch-man-wallpaper-700x280 Top 10 Strongest One Punch Man Anime Characters [Updated]

Was this surprising?

With his life going nowhere, Saitama decided to become a superhero so that he could save people after an incident in which he saved a child from a crab monster. 3 years later, after his “intensive” (read: 100 push-ups, 100 squats, 100 sit-ups, 10k marathon and no air-con) workout, he has lost all his hair and become immensely powerful, defeating anyone he comes across with one punch. Which loops back to him feeling like his life is going nowhere as he can’t feel the thrill of battle because everyone else is just too weak.

Yet, despite his overwhelming strength, he doesn’t abuse it for his own need. With power like that, he could have easily taken over the world or led a decadent life, however, he lives like a NEET most of the time. He didn’t even take credit for defeating the Sea King, a feat only he could’ve done at that point of time, just so the other heroes wouldn’t be looked down upon. His greatest strength in all this is his heart and kindness.
Well…not really. His greatest strength is…ONE PUNCH!

Closing Paragraph

One Punch Man is the very epitome of what an action anime should be like. The battles are exciting, fun and interesting to watch. Even characters that were introduced at the last minute are interesting to cheer for because they seem to fight with such ferocity and power that we can’t help but keep in awe at their strength.
And that’s why, despite its horrible premise, One Punch Man is still a good action anime.

That’s because everyone on this list, and those that aren’t as well, provide us with such stunning fights that don’t include everyone being defeated in one blow. Even when Saitama is involved, it gets interesting in its own way as well.

We hope you enjoyed our Top 10 Strongest One Punch Man Characters list. Feel free to leave your suggestions for who else should be on it in the comments below.
