Top 10 Summer 2017 Anime We Are Hyped For

Are you ready for summer and the onslaught of new anime that comes with it? Never mind the beach body, what you really need to work out is which shows will be worth your time this coming anime season. That’s where we come in. As the two people behind Honey’s anime database, we’re the first to know all the latest details about upcoming anime. We know what looks interesting, funny, ecchi as all hell - you name it, we can recommend you an upcoming show.

But even then, there’s just so many anime to choose from - just under 60 at the moment this is being published, in fact. So which anime do we recommend the most? Which shows are we 100% here for this summer season? Let’s find out with our top 10 summer anime we are hype for!

Ellyn Barnes

1. Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun

First up we have soccer anime Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun. Now, this isn’t your everyday sports anime. In fact, it’ll definitely be more of a comedy than anything else. The story follows Aoyama-kun, a high school student who is incredibly talented, but also incredibly obsessed with cleanliness. Can you imagine someone trying to stay clean in the middle of a soccer match? That’s pretty much what this anime is going to be, but funnier.

Oh, and Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun probably won’t feature much of the rivalry and high-paced competition you see in sports anime. Pretty much replace that with Aoyama-kun dodging the soccer ball and other players, and scenes of him cleaning whilst remaining incredibly cool, like Sakamoto with soccer skills. It’s going to be great, I promise.

2. Hitorijime My Hero

“FINALLY!” scream BL fans across the globe. True Boys Love anime is beyond rare, with Super Lovers being the most recent thing we could get our rotten little hands on. Now, we’re getting an adaptation of Hitorijime My Hero, a spinoff manga from Memeco Arii’s yaoi manga Hitorijime Boyfriend. That means we’re in for legit gay anime couples and what sounds like some angsty past stuff to work through to get to some good romantic times.

However, said romantic times will be limited, I’m afraid, as Hitorijime My Hero’s anime version won’t be going all-out yaoi, but settling in at a safe shounen-ai level. Think more slice of life than the focus being all about the homo. Saying that, we have very little to go off at the moment, as we only have a very vague synopsis and a key visual to work with. So you never know, it could turn around and surprise us. Either way, Hitorijime My Hero is going to be a must-watch for BL fans this summer.

3. Skirt no Naka wa Kedamono Deshita

Next up is THE anime I am here for this summer. Pure filth? Check. Crossdressing? Check. This anime ticks all the dirty, dirty boxes if you’re looking for something that can be as nasty as you want it to be. Like its predecessor Souryo to Majiwaru Shikiyoku no Yoru ni, this anime will have three levels of censorship - ecchiless, ecchi, and all-out hentai. Unfortunately that means it will also only be a few minutes long (that’s what he said) but even so, this looks like it will be pure gold.

The story (and yes, it does have one...apparently) follows a girl who meets a beautiful older woman at a matchmaking event, only to discover that she’s actually a crossdressing guy. One of my favourite things about this anime is the title, which literally means “there was a beast under her skirt.” Anyway, this setting means we get the best of two worlds: straight hentai and yuri lovin’. Looks like two girls are banging, but one of them is actually a really pretty dude. Don’t expect too much from the animation, but if you’re interested in what you’re reading right now, you probably don’t care all that much about that anyway. Just give it a shot.

4. DIVE!!

Move, I’m gay. I mean… If you enjoyed Free!, I’ve just found your new favourite anime. If you kinda block out the faces and focus on the bodies, that is. Oh, and pay attention to the sports anime side of it. Did I mention this is a sports anime? So you can expect all the goodness that comes with that, like hot rivalries and plenty of fujoshi/fudanshi fodder when it comes to shipping potential. Oh, and plenty of hot bods. Can’t forget that.

Of course, this isn’t just for girls and BL fans, and it’s not all about the fanservice. DIVE!! is all about young men chasing their dreams and trying to make it to the Olympics in order to save their school diving club. You can expect plenty of passionate, well-rounded characters, each with their own quirks, and a fast-paced story filled with competition. It’s the perfect sport for summer, too, so get ready to dive right in!

5. Netsuzou TRap -NTR-

I for one am not particularly interested in romance anime. Well, straight romance anime. But give me gays or drama and messed up emotions and I am THERE. The more messed up a fictional relationship is, the more I want to watch the drama unfold. Luckily for me, and you if you’re into the same kind of anime, Netsuzou TRap has both of these elements. The anime follows Yuma and Hotaru, two girls who have boyfriends who, under the pretense of learning about love, ending up having a little yuri fun of their own.

I can see this getting seriously twisted, and that makes for great anime. Netsuzou TRap gives off some serious Kuzu no Honkai vibes, so if you enjoyed that, this show is sure to be a hit with you, too. You should also expect plenty of ecchi scenes between the two girls, and maybe even with their boyfriends, but most likely not as much. So basically, if you enjoy watching sexy times and teenage angst, make sure not to miss out on Netsuzou TRap!

6. Koi to Uso

I love drama. I can eat that stuff right up like a delicious cake as they are my electrolytes. But make it more drama filled with a forbidden love that is illegal and I am right there for it. Koi to Uso (Love and Lies) is all about something known as the Yukari Law. Basically because Japan has a declining birthrate, something that is already happening, when teenagers turn 16 they are informed of whom will be their partner for life to help them reproduce. Think controlled breeding like animals, but it is humans. So this new process cuts out dating, feelings, confessions, and disappointment. Once the government decides, you are with that person for life.

Yukari Nejima aka Neji decides to confess to his love. He does, but then immediately after, the government alerts him that his match is ready. The deal is done. He has to go with the girl whom the government has chosen for him. Or does he? He does not want to arbitrarily follow the rules. Thus this dramatic tale opens. To be honest, the art for the girls is kinda creepy and reminds me slightly of bugs, but the story promises to be thrilling and dramatic. I am 10000% here for this this season.

7. Jigoku Shoujo Yoi no Togi (Hell Girl 4th Season)

We are going down the rabbit hole again with Enma Ai and all of her friends. The 4th season of Jigoku Shoujo is here! This time, we are looking at Enma Ai and everyone else coming back, but this time, it seems that Ai will not just be sending people to hell. There is a new character, or is she a problem? Suddenly, a girl names Michiru appears in front of the group and they are confused as to who she is. Michiru has no clue who she is and it is up to the group to unravel the mystery around her. The series is going to feature 6 new episodes and 6 “reflection” episodes. It has not been announced how Michiru is going to fit into the season overall.

I have loved this show since I saw season one. In fact, the ending of the series till this point actually made me want to cry just because of how sad it was. So, I am naturally ready to see more of this series. I think we can expect a lot out of something that really does talk about the darkness that resides in people’s hearts which is what Jigoku Shoujo does well. The soul-crushing darkness is the most fun to play around with I feel for this series and I just cannot wait to see the kimono that Ai sports this season!

8. Tenshi no 3P

Tenshi no 3P follows the story of three lolis in a band. However, they suck at management and need help. They email Kyou Nukui, a reclusive music producer who has gained fame online for his music productions. Reaching out to him, what luck! They ask him to help them out. You see, they may be fifth graders, but these little girls are in a band! They are known as the three angels or Tenshi no 3P.

I know this sounds weird, but I really do love these anime with lolis. While I am completely over these reclusive hikikomori main character setups, I rather do enjoy the journey that they make socially and spiritually when they are finally brought out of their shell. I say that I am not a fan of the setup though, because of the fact that this would never ever ever happen in real life or even in reality ever. However, this looks cute! Like BanG! Dream but with a better and more interesting setup. Check it out below!

9. Kakegurui

Before we start, just watch the PV.

So the story is about a school where the students do not learn about sports or subjects, but about gambling. At Hyakkaou Private Academy, social status is not determined by how good your grades are, how good you are at sports, or how sexy you may be. Instead, it is controlled by how well of a gambler you are. Take a risk or kakegurui and see what your luck is.

This series is going to be dark as well. One only needs to see the PV or the visual. Originally I was not interested in the series, but this most recent PV has totally won me over with the stuck up characters who will speak condescendingly to one another while gambling. I love some good prostrating and this is perfect. There is nothing better than confident characters doing what they excel at. Definitely check out this one if you like the thrills of betting combined with drama!

10. Vatican Kiseki Chousakan

Vatican Kiseki Chousakan is also featured on our supernatural fantasy anime that we are looking forward to for summer and for good reason! If you are a fan of shows like Trinity Blood, Cannan, Bungou Stray Dogs, or Chrono Crusade, then you are going to like this guaranteed. The story is about Kou and Robert. They are two priests who work for the church investigating the supernatural in order to determine if they are truly miracles or just deception. If it is deception, then they need to exorcise that which is impure.

This anime has something for everyone because even if you are not into it, the ladies, and those into them regardless, will be all over the bishounen leads. This supernatural anime is not something to be overlooked, so be sure to check out the PV below and prepare yourself to venture into the world of the Vatican Miracle Examiner.
