Synopsis
In this world, witches not only exist, but they practice their sorcery. Yet, in the same world, people do not know of what magic is. In those times, there was a mercenary who was half-beast and half-human. He and his kind, however, are mocked by humans for their existence and called “fallen beasts”.
Day after day, he dreams of becoming fully human, and one day, he encounters a beautiful witch who could change his entire fate. “Do you want to go back? To being a human..? Then in that case, I command thee to become mine escort!”
The witch introduces herself as “Zero” and reveals that she is currently in search of a magical tome called “The Book of Zero.” This book can potentially teach someone the power to bring the world to ruin. It was stolen from her by someone and should she get it back, she can help him. In order for the mercenary to become fully human with the power of Zero, he would need to meet her requirement of helping her find this magical tome. The problem is though is that he hates witches, and he would have to serve as the guard to one. Regardless, the two set out for the imperial capital searching for “Number thirteen”, a magician who holds the key to finding “the book of zero”, but it is already too late as they have fallen into a trap…?!
Three Episode Impression
Two words: Spice & Wolf! This series feels just like the amazing classic, but with just a little more humor and a little bit lighter of a story to digest. While we find it extremely difficult to imagine that anyone had a hard time with Spice and Wolf (blasphemy), Zero Kara Hajimeru Mahou no Sho may just be the springboard you need into the series. It’s fun, enjoyable, and the characters are actually semi-well developed meaning that there is more for us to enjoy! Though, it could be argued at the current pace that Zero may not find her grimoire this season, which means we could be getting more. Who knows, but we sure hope so!

Zero is a spontaneous and carefree witch. She is traveling alone in search of the dangerous magical tome ‘The Book of Zero’.
Mercenary
Voice Actor: Tsuyoshi Koyama
Mercenary has been half beast and half human since he was born, so he has always dreamed of the day he could become fully human. Unlike his appearance, he is quite compassionate.
Albus
Voice Actor: You Daichi
Albus is a member of the Magical Instructors Guild which happens to be in possession of ‘The Book of Zero’
Holdem
Voice Actor: Masayuki Kato
Holdem is a bit of a womanizer, so his trademark is to dress as a noble and speak of frivolous things.
Number 13
Voice Actor: Takehito Koyasu
Number 13 is a Magician who knows everything about Zero’s past. It does seem that he knows something about ‘The Book of Zero’ but....
